Serious question (with so much love i promise) for people who were upset with Ellie and Dina’s relationship playing out slower over the first 3 episodes of the show, DO YOU GET IT NOW!!?? Always trust a slow burn, that’s my wisdom for you.

I see a lot of people who are complaining about Ellie’s hair in season two, quite often in the context of defending Bella (which is nice to see), HOWEVER! There are many possible reasons why the hair is different from the game, and I hate to see the hair department being slandered for it, so I want to give my professional opinion as to why.

(My credentials are that I am currently going to school for costuming, and I have some experience working on film sets. I do not specialize in hair, so this is just from a costumers standpoint)

1.

Continuity is hard to maintain on set! Behind the camera there are always hair, makeup, and costumes people working to maintain continuity from scene to scene, which are typically not shot in order. This involves literally referencing continuity photos from previous scenes to make sure nothing changes when it’s not supposed to. Adjustments are made during final touches, which is almost always extremely brief. Time is money in this industry, and costumes/makeup/hair are expected to be lighting fast! There is just simply not enough time for the hair team to be able to be precise with maintaining continuity on such a detailed hairstyle. ESPECIALLY for the main character who will have the most eyes on them.

Ellie’s hairstyle in the game literally defies gravity! If you don’t believe me, look at a quality photo of her hair, specifically from a side angle. It is just barely tucked behind her ears, with many pieces just floating above them. It only works because video game physics allow it to. I’m sure anyone with hair like that in real life is constantly adjusting it. Bobby pins and hairspray can only do so much when you’re going for a realistic hairstyle. Bobby pins are not invisible, and too much hairspray will cause the hair to be unable to move naturally. There are many talented cosplayers who have recreated the hairstyle wonderfully, however for film and TV, action sequences and realism need to be taken into account.

The slicked back hair just makes more sense character wise. I know that bangs are sometimes more flattering, but consider maybe that aesthetics are not the priority here. It’s been established that Ellie is not someone who cares very much about her appearance. In my opinion, it makes the most sense that she would favour a more practical hairstyle. Something she can tie back and not worry about while engaging in intense combat.

4.

I see a lot of people saying the hair was done to resemble Tess’s hair in season 1. I think that’s a great way to explain it narratively, but I’m not convinced that that would be the only reason for the change.

Anyways, that’s just my 2 cents! I wanted to share because I would really like more people to understand that there are reasons hairstylists and costumers make the decisions they do, and that usually it involves more than just aesthetics. Just because it might not look visually appealing to you doesn’t mean it wasn’t the best choice they could have made. Pay them some respect, it’s a hard job!

I MADE A LIST OF EVERY MOUNTAIN GOATS LIVE SHOW WITH LINKS TO THEIR TAPINGS ONLINE

Back in August, I started a list of every Mountain Goats show known to the fandom wiki with links to anywhere a taping has been uploaded. And now it is done.

There are two sheets here which you can swap to by tabs at the bottom of the screen. The first sheet is the list itself, and the second sheet explains why some cells are coloured and what those colours mean.

Because I used the Mountain Goats fandom wiki, a handful of shows and tapings may not be there. But I estimate that 97 to 99% of shows are on there. There’s probably a bunch of tapings I haven’t found yet.

I wanted to know what we have and what we don’t. Now that I have a good idea, I want to share the list with everyone else. 

Despite having reached the end of the list of live shows on the fandom wiki, there’s still stuff to be done with the list. For starters, I’ll do what I can to keep them up to date. I also need to improve the layout of the list and link to the wiki pages of the shows.

But, I need help from you readers as well if possible. As I mentioned before, it’s likely that the wiki has fewer links to tapings than are actually out there. If you know of one, please let me know so I can make the list more accurate. Also, if we can get shows up on more sources, with permission from the uploaders, these things won’t become lost. A few may have been already since there are dead links on the wiki, and thus this list. If you can help in either of those ways, it would be much appreciated.

I’m not asking for money and I’m not trying to boost myself online. All I hope is that this tool is out there and useful to folks like me and you.
