https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-become-a-plumber/answer/Charlie-Gonzales
Honestly, I have BAD NEWS for you Ben. I would Really not Recommend, The Plumbing Field. Unless You Apply the FOLLOWING FRIEND. The Following Good and Bad Reasons.
The Pros and Cons:
1. Most People do Not Like to Crawl underneath Houses. And in Attics.
(You Can Wear KNEE PADS for your KNEES Get GOOD ONES. ALL LIKE A SPONGE TYPE.
And as far as working in attics preferably early in the morning then stop when it gets too HOT and go back in the evening. OH AND USE A PORTABLE AIR CONDITIONER OR A COUPLE OF BIG FANS. This is a MUST, ESPECIALLY in THE SUMMER.)
2. Most Plumbers Deal with Drain's work. And Unless, you have a strong stomach?? (Well You can also wear a MASK. And when there to BAD I just Turn those Down.)
3. Some Companies, make you work on weekends, nights, etc..
( You can change company)
4. The first couple of years is Grunt Work. The Pick and Shovel were my Best Friends for several years. (This is a MUST.)
5. Basically your the Gopher for the first few years. ( Same as above.)
6. In order to be proficient in sizing or laying out a plumbing system. You have to go to a R.O.P. or Job Training (P.H.C.C.) to Learn the basics AND INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED AND HEATING. Usually for TWO + Years.
7. If you ever go out on your own. You have to know about. "How To Do Marketing."
OK, Finally!!! The Pros:
Those of us who stay WITH IT FOR SEVERAL YEARS. (Myself for over 35 + Years.) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. TO ALWAYS DO EXCELLENT WORK. YES, ALWAYS!!
And YOU WILL BE CLASSIFIED WITH A FIVE STAR RATING ONLINE, ON GOOGLE AND YELP, ETC... an A+ RATED on THE B.B.B.
1. People will call you all the time it's Sunday Today and I got at least four or five calls to go do some work. ( I scheduled two for Tomorrow. SEVERAL WHERE EMERGENCIES. But this takes time.)
2. IF you're REALLY GOOD AT PLUMBING AND MARKETING. You can WORK ALL THE TIME.
3. You get to choose the Job, the Hours, ETC,
4. Sometimes I will make Five Hundred in a Day. or More. (But this may Take Awhile.)
5. Like I said Unless You Really like it go for it.
TIPS:
AND ALWAYS CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK AND TRIPLE CHECK YOUR WORK. Go The Extra Mile... Whether You're Roughing in A Toilet to a house or an entire Plumbing System to a Hospital Building or to A Hotel(s)... Always Check and Check your work that it is perfect. Or to the Best of Your Ability.
1. GO TO SCHOOL FOR PLUMBING ( I went to the Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, Contractors Association. Training in 1984.)

Why would copper be used for plumbing rather than iron?
https://www.quora.com/Why-would-copper-be-used-for-plumbing-rather-than-iron/answer/Charlie-Gonzales
I imagine a person could get sick using Iron for instance on a Residential water line. And I suppose it would taste like Iron or steel if left standing for a long time And For that the simple reason would be Taste. So I would say it is s not be very agreeable to the taste.
And if the water is left standing. Just Imagine if the water you drank from was in a steel container. I guess it would be difficult to stomach. Let alone what it could do to your health, would be another factor.
Although nowadays more and more plastic is being used on water supply lines. Cost is the main reason(s), that water lines are being used. With the rising cost of copper piping. Plastic is the obvious inexpensive choice.
But there again I would like to mention that before in the 1980s (Quest Piping). Plastic piping was Installed and it began leaking usually after a few years. And all that piping was replaced. with copper.
I actually Installed some Quest before when I was working for plumbing companies before. Although it was not agreeable to me. To install Quest.
The newer plastic piping PEX water pipe is supposed to be a lot better and is supposed to last like copper piping. But there again only time will tell.
And I would have to say it is based on the owner if they wish to install plastic or copper piping. My preference has always been copper. Because I have seen copper last 50 - 70 years.
Factors that Help Copper piping or contribute to its duration. Or for that matter, any water pressurized system is to always have a Pressure Regulator in working order. A simple $10 water test gauge can be screwed onto the hose bibb to check for the water pressure This should be done after the pressure regulator if there is already one.
A pressure regulator will help keep the water pressure from being too excessive and keep it at a normal pressure. Around 50–55 lbs this should be adequate and I believe it helps the pressure regulator to last.
I believe it comes preset around 45 lbs. So maybe around 50 lbs is a good range. There again it depends on the pressure that the person likes.
I always recommend to let a professional do the work.

Why Re-Piping Your House is Worth It
https://www.masterplumbing.com/plumbing/why-re-piping-your-house-is-worth-it/
Picking your next remodeling project can be exciting. However, figuring out what renovations you need can be tricky if you’re not keeping a detailed list that you modify every time you come across another problem. While many homeowners like to transform their kitchen or bathroom, they don’t think about the pipes running through the entire house.
Upgrades Are Worth It
Pipes will eventually wear out at some point. Like everything else in your home, you need to replace them. You wouldn’t keep a microwave or a washing machine if they no longer serve their purposes. So if your current pipes have outlived their usefulness, then upgrades are worth it. Pipes are built to last, but think about how often water mains in your town break. Pipes that are older than fifty years old are at their breaking point. Copper pipes tend to last longer than this benchmark, and galvanized pipes could still be there a hundred years from now. That said, poor water quality will take its toll. Plus, any damage issues can cause old plumbing to stop working.
Get Rid of Old Pipes
Get rid of old pipes. It’s pointless to put it off. For one thing, using chemical drain cleaners will do more harm than good. Pipes from all of the most recent decades except the most recent ones will need to be replaced with newer ones. This is because you don’t want to rely on polybutylene pipes anymore. At one time, they made for excellent alternatives to lead pipes. The problem is that these pipes are prone to breaking, which is another reason to get them out of your house.
Address Water Pressure and Color Problems
Water pressure problems can also become a problem. Most of the time, this is for a simple reason, such as someone running the dishwasher while you’re trying to take a shower. If you get your water from the city, then other problems could be affecting how much flow you are getting. Then again, it could just be your pipes. Flakes of rust and bits of dirt can cause the water to turn disgusting colors. Even if the water is technically safe to use, you won’t want to. Leaks can also point out that something has gone wrong and you need to deal with it right away.

WHAT IS A WATER PRESSURE REGULATOR?
https://www.moeplumbing.com/our-blog/2019/july/what-is-a-water-pressure-regulator-/
Just about anyone knows that water can’t flow uphill. That’s why valleys and areas at the base of a mountain are generally the most prone to flooding when heavy rains fall. So if that’s the case how does water get to all of the various faucets and fixtures around your home, including the ones  upstairs? The answer: the water in your plumbing lines is under pressure. Water pressure comes from the supply and carries through the water main network all throughout your community. That means the water which enters your home is under pressure as well, and this is what pushes water everywhere it needs to be.
However, too much pressure is not a good thing. What happens when you blow up a balloon too much? It pops. Too much air pressure inside the balloon caused it to burst, and the same thing can happen to your plumbing lines. So to counteract this and prevent too much pressure from damaging your home’s plumbing, your home is outfitted with a pressure regulator valve located near your water meter.
HOW A PRESSURE REGULATOR WORKS
A water pressure regulator is pretty simple as far as plumbing devices go. Essentially, the regulator consists of a spring-loaded diaphragm which reduces the pressure of the water entering your home down to a more reasonable and consistent level. This also make your water pressure even and consistent as well—whereas an unregulated plumbing line could experience wild fluctuations in water pressure, a regulated line should always have close to the same pressure at all times. Likewise, it’s also worth noting that your water pressure regulator cannot boost your water pressure, only reduces it.
What’s a “reasonable” water pressure level, you might ask? While the answer varies from home to home, generally a number between 40 and 60 pounds per square-inch (PSI) is an ideal level. However, some water supplies around LA County have to boost their pressure as high as 100 PSI or more in order to supply water to the furthest reaches of their lines. And the problem only continues to grow as more and more construction adds more and more need for water over a wider geographic area.
WHAT HIGH WATER PRESSURE CAN DO TO YOUR HOME?
Is high water pressure really that big of a deal? Believe it or not, yes. It very much is. While we’ve already discussed the idea that too much water pressure can cause your pipes to burst, the truth is you’re probably going to see other, smaller problems far more frequently. Too much water pressure can cause things like dripping or leaking faucets, leaking toilets, or leaks in hoses leading to appliances like your water heater, washing machine, or dishwasher. It can even shorten the life of these appliances as well, leading to considerable extra expense replacing them more often than normal!
Likewise, while we’ve discussed burst pipes before, the truth is too much pressure usually creates problems that start small, such as minor leaks. These leaks are pesky, but if they seem to continually be coming back, then there’s a good chance too much pressure may be to blame.

HOW To Basic DRAIN Cleaning
https://www.sandiegoplumberonline.com/plumber-san-diego-san-diego-plumber-posts/how-to-basic-drain-cleaning
Basic Ideas on clearing a drain.
Bathroom Sinks: When cleaning a Bathroom sink first thing is to use common sense. Before taking everything apart. Check to see if the pop up assembly or the stopper. Is not full of hair some you can just lift right up. Others you have to a take apart the nut and a rod and then just pull the stopper up.
And actually before you do that you can try to insert into the sink what is called a zip it which are offered at the home depot. And are inexpensive 5 or 6 dollars. It's like a flexible long plastic. That you can stick into the sink drain.
Unclogging a kitchen drain: To unclog a drain that goes to the kitchen sink. First check to see if there is a clean out. This would be usually right outside the kitchen window. And it would have a plastic plug or a cast iron plug.
Usually you would be able to just unscrew off. Although, Sometimes with the passage of time they freeze up and will not come off.
Another choice might be to snake the drain from underneath the kitchen sink.
Another alternative choice would be to go on the roof and snake it from the vent. Although unless you really know what your doing. I wouldn't recommend this.
