her heart is thundering in her chest , her nerves suddenly manifesting as she plays with a strand of her hair. she's a grandmother , for christ sake , but the way her stomach flips reminds her of being a teenager. she clings to the phone like it's a life line , wanting to hear more of his voice.

❝ i'll unlock the door. ❞ she says , as an answer. a smile blossoms on her own lips as she glances around. gemma was a master in the art of housekeeping , so she didn't need to clean anything other than the ash tray in front of her. ( as though tig hadn't seen her home before ) and then she begins to fret over her appearance. she needed to refresh her lipstick and perfume if she was going to have a guest.

❝ don't keep me waiting. ❞ gemma adds cheekily , before grinding the rest of her cigarette into ash. ❝ see you soon. ❞

she hangs up the phone and gets up , turning on the light above the kitchen door and unlocking it before heading deeper into the house. she takes a look at herself in the mirror , inclining her chin and dancing her fingers over the scar on her chest. she quickly changes into a shirt with deeper neckline and rearranges her hair and touches up her makeup.

when she's done freshening up , gemma checks her phone for the time and heads back to the kitchen to start a pot of coffee.

⠀⠀there’s this strangled sort of sound that comes out mere seconds after hearing those words that come out on the other end of the line. almost like he can’t believe he’s actually hearing them. he’s suddenly overwhelmed with this giddy feeling, pushing himself further back into the leather chair he’s sat in.

〝 ah, gem — i don’t … shit i don’t know. 〞while that smile faded as soon as it had appeared, his knee begins to jump as his head rolls back against the worn leather. 〝 can i come over? 〞

a softer tone, one that allows his vulnerability to spill so easily over. if she focused hard enough, she might even hear a little begging in there.

〝 better than us playing phone - tag over here. 〞his voice grows a little more bolder, like he’s wading through how this might come off to her. they were both dipping their toes into something they haven’t chanced on in ( years. )
