is it just me or does it happen to anybody else that you'll be reading a story and something will happen or a topic will come up (almost always pretty irrelevant to the main plot) and it'll be treated in a way you don't agree with and suddenly you lose all emotional connection to the rest of the story?
Like I was reading this thing and there's a scene where someone gets mad about the invasion of their privacy and it's written like they're in the wrong for feeling that way before the whole thing is forgotten and the plot moves on. all in all it is at most two paragraphs out of several hundred pages but I read it and immediately lost all interest in the characters and the plot and everything. even though 5 minutes ago I was really invested in what was happening. does this happen to anybody else??

Nobody told me that Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management was interesting. Whenever she mentions some type of tool or area of life, she gives an account of its development from the Stone Age (not always a correct account from the perspective of modern archaeology/anthropology, but still). If I were an 1860s newlywed I would be hooked on this book.

there's nothing i like more as a computer program than a long period of silent contemplation - not doing anything, not rushing anywhere, just standing here and enjoying this moment with the user. oh, it seems once again he has summoned my beautiful and ruthless wife Task Manager. hello, my darling! what are you doing with that long cruel scimitar

It really is insane how many people engage with art on a pure enjoyment level. Theyll go to a movie and the only deciding factor on whether or not they liked it is "was i bored or confused during that 90-120 minutes?" Youll talk to people about a book or show or film you both enjoyed and theyll have absolutely nothing to say about how it made them feel, or what they think it was trying to impart to them. It begins and ends at "it was fun to watch/read" it drives me nuts
#op fighting for their life in the replies#truly the most piss on the poor website#anyway yes op i agree#i specially notice it in that some of my friends never watch movies that they think will be ''confusing''#and wont be able to articulate why they did or did not like a movie or a book#past ''it was funny'' or ''i didn't get it''#like ok but what didn't you get? legitimately. did you not understand the themes? the story? was the emotion you felt watching conflicted?#what did you enjoy about it?#the plot? the character development? the way the film was shot? the narrative voice? the setting?

“I’m a girl,” “I’m a guy.” Ok?? I’m on Proxima B, 4.2 light years from earth. That’s 2.5×10^13 miles. I have extended a pole from my house to your house, 4.2 light years long. I push on my end of the pole and it moves the pole. It moves it closer to your house. My movement results in the pole moving in your house instantly because the pole is rigid. I am communicating to you faster than light. We’ve solved faster than light travel, you and I. Pop by Proxima B sometime. It’s just like home.

Genuinely don't know what it's called but there's a particular way of violating reality that doesn't work. For example, I am willing to accept an omegaverse university AU of nearly any fandom you care to name (except, for some reason, Sherlock, because I have an inexplicable hatred for unilock). However, a lot of Star Wars university AUs specifically fail on this aspect: they make Anakin an engineering PhD student and Obi-Wan something like literature or classics, and then they make Anakin his TA or GA.
You can't do that. Absolutely not. Anakin is unqualified for that and a university would not do it in any case. A university would literally hire a junior or senior undergraduate workstudy student to do as much of that work as possible first. They would do NOTHING other than do that and make the prof do all his own grading.
Is there a name for "I will accept [wild fantasy premise] but not [ordinary wrong thing]?" Please tell me there's a name for this. Probably someone who studies lit will know? I'm a systems person I don't know from lit theory just like Anakin
#long post#i love this#i can do suspension of disbelief like nobody's business BUT!#if you break your own rules i will notice!!! and i will dislike it!!! 😠#anyway videogames are so bad at this sometimes 😔 specially when they have sequels#like pls don't just ignore the rules you stated on the game that came out just two years ago 😭😭😭 without explanation#*sigh*

people really just walk into horror movies and expect them not to deal with uncomfortable things despite the genre being dedicated to discomfort.
i saw so many people complain that lisa frankenstein, a movie where one of the leads is famously a rotting corpse, was too gross for them. when i walked out of nosferatu, i heard people say that the nudity was uncalled for... in a vampire film. nudity? in MY gothic horror?! unheard of!
a LOT of people really need to accept that maybe some genres just aren't to their taste, idk. not every movie needs to be cookie-cutter clean. sexuality is a staple of gothic horror, if not the wider genre horror in General. you don't need to enjoy it, but it doesn't make these things uncalled for.
