Amazon Slammed Over “Unethical And Illegal” Chinese Factory Conditions
Foxconn Technology Group said on Sunday that it is investigating its Chinese factory that makes Amazon devices, after new evidence from the New York-based China Labor Watch exposed the “unethical and illegal” working conditions at the manufacturing plant. “We are carrying out a full investigation of the areas raised by the report, and if found to be true, immediate actions will be taken to bring the operations into compliance with our Code of Conduct,” Taiwan-based Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., explained to Reuters. The findings were disclosed in a 94-page report released by China Labor Watch, which conducted a nine-month investigation of working conditions at the Foxconn factory in the city of Hengyang which manufactures Amazon’s Kindle, Echo smart speaker, Echo Dots, and an array of tablets. During the investigation, the advocacy group said it discovered that dispatch workers made up more than 40% of the Hengyang Foxconn’s workforce, a significant rights violation of the legally mandated 10% ceiling. Dispatch workers were also treated very differently than regular workers, the report explains how regular workers receive extra sums of money for overtime hours, and their wages are well above the standard of living; however, dispatch workers earn 14.5 RMB/hour (USD 2.26) with no extra pay for overtime. Former prosecutor and Judge, Jeanine Pirro has “repeatedly told Trump’s aides and advisers over the last 18 months that she’s interested in taking over as the nation’s top law enforcement official,” according to Politico, citing four people familiar with the conversations. Pirro first began talking with transition aides in late 2016 about joining the administration, according to Politico. Though she expressed interest in the attorney general job, when it became clear that job was going with Sessions, she began pushing for deputy attorney general, according to two Trump administration officials. Since then, the nexus between the White House and Fox News has grown ever closer, as has Trump’s relationship with Pirro. Florida didn’t conduct gun background checks for an entire year because an official couldn’t log in
and go through the trouble of resetting your login info — but sometimes, it’s really, really important. After Florida officials had trouble logging into the FBI crime database to determine whether or not to approve concealed weapons permit applications, tens of thousands of applicants were approved to carry firearms without ever receiving a required background check, Tampa Bay Times reported Friday. Employees in the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services stopped using the database for more than a year, an investigation found. During that year, Florida received a record number of concealed carry permit applications — 245,000, compared to 134,000 applications the year before. Investigators are unsure of how many applicants received a permit when they should have been denied, but the conspicuous lack of denials and appeals during that year is reportedly what finally tipped officials off that something was going wrong in the applications process. Adam Putnam, Florida’s Agriculture commissioner who headed the department, has bragged about the increased number of concealed carry permits, reports the Times. Iraq’s Christians, Muslims agree to revive site of ancient church
BAGHDAD — A group of Christians from Baghdad who visited the ruins of the Church of Kokheh, located 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of the Iraqi capital, were spontaneously invited by the local Muslim community for lunch after their tour. The historical Church of Kokheh is one of the early points of departure of Christianity in the Middle East, Father Mansour al-Makhlissi, founder and head of the Center for Eastern Studies at the Roman Catholic Church in Baghdad, told the visitors as he took them around the site of the church on May 25. “It was the patriarchal residence of the Eastern Church for centuries,” he said, adding that 24 patriarchs were buried in the church built by Saint Mari in the first century. Over the past 20 years, Christians could not visit the remnants of the church due to safety concerns, most recently due to the attacks by the Islamic State. With the area now more secure, the Center for Eastern Studies organized the visit to the Church of Kokheh. The current al-Mada’in district was called Ctesiphon or Taysafun in ancient times, and served as the winter capital of the Parthian Empire and later of the Sasanian Empire.
