“if jeanne could learn to hold her own against him they could be a adorable couple” wow, this is completely not how unhealthy relationships should be handled. the issue with vanitas and jeannes relationship is that its built on harassment and forced compliance. if their relationship could become healthy, which would take a shit ton of development, it would have to start with vanitas. he would need to be stripped of his ‘power’ over her (the forced reliance on him for blood in exchange for staying quiet abt her possibly being a cursebearer) and learn to be respectful of consent, her boundaries, seeing her as a person, ect. any relationship where a member has to learn how to defend themselves against the person who initiated their relationship is beyond unhealthy and in no way whatsoever a fix. this would just continue the cycle of mistrust and mistreatment.

while we’re on the topic of doctor moreau, i think it’s important to acknowledge the fact he is literally a homophobic caricature, similar to the one present in blue exorcist, and it is especially insulting because the author, H G wells, of “the island of doctor moreau” was actually convicted of male sodomy, the novel has several allusions to the famous gay writer oscar wilde and his controversial, yet most widely praised, novel “the portrait of dorian gray” and the novels references to several gay scandals of the victorian age.

i haven’t seen anyone else acknowledge this yet, but the name doctor moreau is actually a reference to the 1896 english scifi/horror novel “the island of doctor moreau” the novel explores themes of what makes us human, how cruel men can be and their capability to cause others pain, and whether there should be limitations to what science could attempt to achieve through doctor moreaus experiments combining animals with humans through vivisection to see whether he could ‘improve’ humanity.

oh yes i definitely think that mochijun is writing their relationship purposefully as unbalanced and unhealthy on purpose. i have no problem with this- i think exploring toxic relationships in a story is a very interesting and helpful thing to do.
my issue is w the last chapter- the whole cabin in the woods kiss scene- being interpreted as romantic. especially when vanitas was in such a bad place physically and mentally. the whole stripping and mouth to mouth exchange was very dubious and uncomfortable to read in my opinion.
i think its supposed to be that way and thats fine, but the fandoms reaction to it is what confuses me. so many ppl thought the scene was sexy and like a forbidden romance, but it was just a flip of their usual dynamic including jeanne taking advantage of vanitas (i know it was for his health, dont get me wrong i love jeanne).
i hope this isnt like #discoursey but the interpretation of jeanne and vanitas’ interaction in the last chapter as romantic just rubs me the wrong way… even jeannes thoughts regarding the night just comes off as very uncomfortable and unhealthy.
i believe that their relationship could get to a stable, healthy point with a lot of character development and amends. but the point that its at currently just irks me- especially since i havent seen anyone else acknowledge the problematic elements of their relationship.

Things I want to happen in the next VnC chapter:
Dominique appearing with a big badass crown, brandishing his magnificent sword and Murr on his shoulder, while is raining rose petals and glitter. She saves Noé and leaves Chloé and butler-kun both tied up. Noé insisted to save Vani and Jeanne too but when she appears and see how close those are, Domi goes and kicks Vanitas’ ass and takes Jeanne with her and Noé too. Leaves Vanitas tied up in the snow.
End of the story. What a great manga!
