Some members of the Renegade Bindery worked together to put together a collection of Tumblr “folktales.” These are things like the God of Arepo, rewriting of classic fairy tales, and so on. This is my copy, which I bound in Corvon Shimmer paper from Neenah Papers (Turquoise Powder is the color), decorated with a foil quill. It didn’t work quite right, but still looked good enough I didn’t want to redo it and waste the cover material.

Wood Engraving Wednesday
Here are a few delightful wood engravings from a recent gift showing the various processes that go into binding a book. This little pamphlet is entitled A Short History of Bookbinding and a Glossary of Styles and Terms Used in Binding … .printed in London at the Chiswick Press for the bookbinder Joseph William Zaehnsdorf in 1895.These images were probably printed from metal plates that were made from the original wood engravings. The engravings are not attributed, as was the case for most commercial engravings.
Click or tap on the images to see the definitions for these activities as provided in the booklet’s glossary.

Bottoms Up
Great evidence that this 16th century book of ancient history was not always stored spine-out! The author, title, and a location/item number (68) appear on the lower edge of the text block. Because we are so used to storing books vertically now, the pretty lettering in this location makes it feel like you’ve found a secret message.
Polybius. Polybii Megalopolitani Historiarum libri priores quinq[ue], Nicolao Perotto Sipontino interprete. Item, Epitome sequentium librorum, usq[ue] ad decimumseptimum, Vuolfgango Musculo interprete. Basileae : Apud Episcopium Iuniorem, M.D. LVII. [1557]

So tomorrow (looks at clock) or rather today is my birthday, so here’s what I got my mom to give me.

Not as cool as an antique cast iron press, but much cheaper and more available. It’s SUPER heavy, like I can barely lift it, which I hadn’t really counted on. So it’s really a modern version of a cast iron press.

My youngest cat Rita (who we mostly call kittenbutt) has inspected it and approved it. At least I know she won’t be knocking it onto the floor.
(Can be bought here.)

WIP headbands (again)
It never fails to amaze me what a difference one colour can make. The whole colour palette tilts into a different direction between both pictures because of one thread. (More pictures of the process and the finished headband under the cut)

HAPPY 2022!
It is once again, a brand new year. Amidst the insane happenings around the world, I must say, 2021 has been a rather challenging, fulfilling, enlightening and a year filled with immense personal growth. In this new day of the new year, I reflect upon the things that has happened in the past year that has made the future a far brighter and exciting one.
Firstly, my lack of posts on my website is because of a rather personal reason. I am currently in my first year in Graduate school, studying a Masters in Arts for the Conservation of Cultural Relics in the Tainan National University of the Arts. I am now currently based in Taiwan and therefore, will only accept commissions if they can be sent to me via post.
Secondly, the journal I have chosen for 2022, is a homework that was given to me by my dearest teacher and mentor, Mark Cockram. He tasked me (a long time ago) to explore the binding techniques of Jean de Gonet. I decided to use the fish skin parchment I made, paired with a soft plate printed rainbow prints of the fish I used for this parchment: the trout. This was bound sewn on cords, featuring the fish skin parchment on the spine as well as the corners. As fish skin is very translucent, I added coloured paper under the skin to brighten it and to give it variety.
In a Chinese new year greeting “年年有餘”, which translates to “Abundance Every Year”, I look forward to this new year with abundance of love, joy, happiness, opportunities, great health and new knowledge.
Here’s wishing the world, a better future, while I study hard, to become a bookbinder/conservator!

A Floral Rebirth
Very often when customers come to get their bibles rebound, I will suggest for them to look for a patterned cloth that they like at fabric shops. The choices of printed fabric today are limitless and amongst the thousands of rolls of cloth, there is bound to be one that resonates with their personality. Ready-made book cloth often come only in solid colours, and that is very limiting. But because I offer the service of making regular fabric into book cloth, a very personalised look can be achieved.
This beautiful floral fabric is paired with a dark maroon book cloth and matching ribbons in three colours to give a very vibrant and cheerful Sunday afternoon cocktail dress feel. It reflects the personality of my customer, who is a very happy, energetic and cheerful lady, with a feminine touch of elegance.
Bound using the disappearing spine Bradel binding, with the floral cloth on the front board, and maroon bookcloth over the spine and back board.

This German art student, Benjamin Harff, decided, for his exam at the Academy of Arts, to do something only slightly ambitious — to hand-illuminate and bind a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Silmarillion. It took him six months of work. He hand-illuminated the text which had been printed on his home Canon inkjet printer. He worked with a binder to assemble the resulting book.

A Childhood Bible
2020 is a new beginning for everyone, especially a couple of very good friends of ours. To wish them all the best on their new journey, I was very happy that I was able to rebind our friend’s childhood bible, as a gift and blessing for their new adventure.
She allowed me to decide for her how her bible should turn out. It was almost a no-brainer for me because I knew what she liked, her favourite styles and colour, and therefore chose this beautiful mustard cloth with cat embroidery for her. I used it once before for another book but I kept this cloth because I like it a lot and wanted to only use it for very special books.
Here’s to the first book post of 2020, wishing our friends, M & A, a fun-filled, exciting, fulfilling journey into the beautiful future.
