Self-isolation in Germany
Self-isolation in Germany - http://gregclarkart.com/self-isolation-in-germany/Greg Clark Writing & Arthttp://gregclarkart.com/self-isolation-in-germany/Wow, 2020 has been officially cancelled. Holidays, work, weddings, Stag-dos, swimming lessons, first aid courses, it's all gone by the wayside. So, what the heck is there to do apart from all the time in the world to write, right!? Wrong!I wish I had more hours in the day, it's the first time I've really understood other people who say that. I'm trying to write book number two, I'm trying to play with Caleb every time he looks at me with those puppy dog eyes, I'm trying to cook healthily and stay focused on my work at the university, yet I need about thirty more hours per week to handle all this. What can I say, I procrastinate? Having said that, gaming with friends has never been more enjoyable, a great tonic to the repetitive days.It could be worse though and I realise that we're luckier than some. My wife has increased her hours after maternity leave sooner than expected to cover my loss of hours from freelance teaching gigs in companies who all emailed within the space of a few days, the leper banished from the kingdom with a smile and no severance pay. Freelancers have such little insurance for events like this.Caleb obviously doesn't have any idea what's happening, he just sits on his knees at his toy chest (actually just a hard plastic box), rifling though his plush goodies, taking one out, putting it back, taking it out again, putting it back. Perhaps it's the first sign of cabin fever. We go out for walks in the centre, sometimes to the big park Grosse Garten on a good day, but we're also waiting for those to come properly. May should be the turning point but then, if this year has taught us anything, do NOT make any more bloody plans!Germany locked down pretty quickly after the first countries did, leaving just supermarkets, takeaways, and public transport open for a while. Everything else closed. It was touch and go whether my mother who was visiting at the time would be able to get her scheduled flight home, which was fine in the end, but it was a crazy few days of waiting to see what the plan was and the measures that would be taken. 99% of people have accepted it, few have broken the rules. It's a shame that so many people have used the crisis as a means of bashing whatever political party they dislike. From my own perspective there are such a huge amount of variables at play that it's pointless to label any country's response as being wholly awful or bad. There have been victories as well as defeats and too often people seem drawn to the conclusion that higher death rates equals bad management. Far more problems cause deaths other than wrong decisions. My hope is that after this Coronavirus disappears - and it should do - that people find enjoyment from the simple things. Family, friends, a Skype chat, a staycation,

Germany's Easter Hypocrisy
Germany's Easter Hypocrisy - http://gregclarkart.com/germanys-easter-hypocrisy/Greg Clark Writing & Arthttp://gregclarkart.com/germanys-easter-hypocrisy/"...beware Mr. Burns, but we Germans are not all smiles and sunshine..."This quote from The Simpsons is a lighthearted poke at the stereotype of Germans and does quite a good job of nailing it. I'm reminded of this mentality no more than at Easter timeYou see, in a country where between 50% and 55% of Germans are Christian in some form or another - many would simply say it out of default - at Easter time they hold sway over the entire population. I wasn't aware of this before I came to Germany. Many of my friends imagine this great country I live in to be some kind liberal wonderland and I have had many conversations where they batter the UK with ease and hold Deutschland up as some kind of progressive pinnacle - whilst simultaneously knowing little of the reality. At Easter (Maundy Thursday to the following Monday) for example the following entertainments are prohibited to some degree in all of the 16 states. Dancing in the streets, playing music in bars, watching films from a list of over 700 is banned in cinemas and from TV channels,
