Response 9: Sounds of the 8th Floor
Part 1:
I am sitting by the elevator door on the south side of the building. I hear students in their science class, debating, and discussing. I then heard the elevator voice say, "8th Floor South." People are talking to each other as they walk down the hall way; but of course there are also the people that walk completely silently, ignoring what goes on around them.
If these sounds were not present, my perception of Avenues would change dramatically. As I come to Avenues every weekday, I become used to hearing the same things over and over again. But usually I just ignore the cacophony of children screaming and talking unnecessarily loudly.
If some other sound were to replace the ones I'm used to hearing at Avenues, I would think of it as a different place. Even though the noises sometimes seem annoying and usually unimportant, sound is something that most people don't appreciate.
Part 2:
The new sound track completely blocks everything out that I'm used to hearing. The sound track "throbbing gristle" puts the listener in a surreal world that is completely disorienting. It sounds mostly like electronic music but it doesn't seem to have much of a beat or rhythm. The sound track Alva Noto" really doesn't seem to have much of a melody. But in this sound track the rhythm and beat is more prevalent and noticeable. Both of these tracks would turn Avenues into a science fiction environment, making it feel like a wasteland of long hallways and classrooms.

Photomontage is a different way of expressing ourselves through art. Some photomontages are broken up and some are seamlessly sewed together. David Hockney is a perfect example of an artist who is extremely talented but decided to create a piece of art that had pictures which were broken up and "separated" from each other. This created the illusion that the world is actually quite broken up and divided into different groupings.
In this montage, the woman has copied her body onto different pieces of paper. The final photo of the project shows her but in picture for with only her hand showing. For me, this is a symbol of "things can be copied, but not exactly."

What did you take away from our discussion last class about HOUSE/HOME LIVE/DWELL?
I learnt that words that we think have the same meaning can often be used in a way that causes them to differentiate them from each other. A home is not necessarily just a building where people sleep. A home is a place where a person feels comfortable and is able to think.
What are ways in which you DWELL in your neighborhood? What types of places would you call home?
Nearby my house is a burger shop called Brgr. I go there all the time because their burgers are great but more importantly the people there are nice and I have gotten to know them very well over the years. This shows me that places we feel at "home" at are not special because of their physical appearance but instead because of the people that occupy them.

High Line NYC Pictures
Tumblr seems like a great way to share our pictures and respond to them. Taking pictures of different things on the high line is a great way to start this year's blog.
