i want to...do stuff but it just hit me how tired i am from doing most emotional and mental labor for my housemate so i kind of just want to bubble and not do anything at all. so i’m going to mothers on monday and haven’t brought a return ticket yet because i really just need to go lie on my face and not think for a while.

umber + tattoos/scars!

anyone with the appropriate knowledge of his tribe’s culture can understand what the deliberate markings mean. scarification is less common but more important, while almost everyone bears at least one tattoo. 

the most important of the markings that he has is the octagonal shape with four claw marks that has been scarified into his right forearm. it’s the tawny symbol that is borne by all members in some shape or form; for most adults it’s a tattoo, for children it’s a medallion, and for those that have chosen to be the defenders and enforcers of the tribe it’s cut into them. the tattoo/scar is gained at 14 when they are formally recognized as junior adults of the tribe, and recently there has been a push for the age to be risen to 16.

the process of gaining the scar is gruelling and painful, requiring the bearer to sit still while their skin is cut away into the desired shape. they are not allowed to heal them over with their aura, as that will remove the scar in strong enough individuals; instead they must manually take care of them and wait. some place wire or clay into the wounds to make them raised, but umber’s is naturally slightly raised; but he did rub a certain kind of ash into it as it healed, and now it has a faint purple hue to it. it’s a symbol of patience, dedication, and fortitude.

the sunburst scar on his chest was gained when he almost exchanged his life for the life of one of his teammates. in tawny culture the sun is seen as a bad omen, and can thus be read as ‘cursed’ or ‘death’. as a response to this, he is planning on getting a large moon scarred into his back so it becomes ‘balance’ when both are seen.

he has four small djed tattooed down his spine, each representing a close call to death that he’d survived, and after he becomes a father he gets a lotus tattooed on his right wrist. after his marriages he tattoos his wives’ symbols next to the outer corner of his eyes. facial tattoos aren’t common among tawnys unless it’s related to the partner they are married to.

What sort of holidays does Umber celebrate? Are there any traditions or habits he's brought with him to Shade? Does he do anything for his team for any particular holiday? Are the holidays hard for him considering he's away from his family?

hella late but tumblr didn’t tell me this existed–

there are many holidays among the tawnys, of varying importance. some are more like april fools in importance, while others are full blown, day/s off with a huge feast and drinking. but the most important holidays focus around natural events and important dates in the tribe. the most important days are on the equinox’s, when they celebrate the balance between the daylight and the dark, and the slow rise or fall towards one or the other for the next few months. the next important one is when the tribe was originally founded and many families became one; joining together in the name of defense, power, and unity.

traditionally, the equinox celebrations is when the rules about drinking alcohol is relaxed for the rest of the tribe and not just the members of the paramilitary ( who have their own set of rules and culture within themselves, and to which umber is a member of ). he can usually be found very happily drunk and telling stories in exchange for food during these holidays, and shares all three with his team quite liberally.

the holidays are a little hard, but that’s life away from the tribe and on a long term solo assignment. but as long as he has good friends- and zarrin, to be honest- he can get by.

pisces is remarked upon for their duality and multiplicity, and they rarely show you the complete picture. there is another intriguing dynamic occurring here too, one of the historic pisces and 12th house angelic archetypes is pasiel -   the angel of Hell (arka). the routes pisces can take to seek reprieve and to escape their anguish is only alleviated for a long moment. eventually they are re-captured by an emotional pain even worse than before, everything they try to evade only returns with increasing vengeance, and this is the demon appearing in the form of an angel. another component of this is the ‘unknown’ aspect and the revelations shown to pisces that are not shown to everyone. some would not be able to see anything regardless, and it would deprave others of their sanity. pisces is ready, but often unwilling. their spiritual service is the path of healing the souls contaminated by earth, and this encompasses those society would prefer to exclude, the imprisoned, the addicted, the lost. they can only do this when they come to acknowledge and not exclude their own carnal, contemptuous, and depraved qualities, the lower part of them that exists within them and experienced on this material plane, and it has to be - or else they would cease to manifest in this dimension at all. when they are whole, they can recognise and accept the same in other people. in this place, they exclude nobody from their healing touch, and most importantly they do not deny themselves

IT FEELS RIDICULOUS, cocking his head like an owl just to have umber in his field of vision. ridiculous, exaggerated, obnoxious, and exhausting. if he hasn’t developed a permanent crick in his neck by now, it’s incoming. 

      ‘ you look terrible, ’ he quietly observes. those bandages cover a part of umber’s chest that’s uncomfortably close to several vital organs. a chill runs down his spine and despite the sunlight, he retreats into his hoodie. ‘ how are you holding up ? ’

          “not bad for the recently dead,” and his words make him laugh. laugh more than he should, pain sparking through his chest, and maybe a little madder than expected. but spirits. considering the other resurrected he knew of? this pain was small. the cost was tiny. so small, he didn’t even know what it was.

          but there was always a cost.

          “but despite everything…i’m still kicking.” umber’s head tilted back, eyes closing and watching the dance of lights across his eyelids. “i thought those grimm were legends. we haven’t fought one in many, many years.”
