Sava Šumanović (1896. – 1942.), The Pickers
When Sava Šumanović finished this painting, someone suddenly knocked on the door. There were the Ustashe who took him from his family house in Šid to Sremska Mitrovica where he was tortured and killed along with 150 of his fellow citizens. While they were taking him away, the third part of this painting was still drying. The women in the painting seem surprised by the event that just happened in reality. They are wondering where their creator disappeared to.
