there’s one of those dazzling million - dollar smiles, ( no, really, she’s probably got it insured. )  she shifts a little closer, playfully making room for this ghost he mentions. still, she doesn’t seem deterred by such a comment. if anything, caroline makes herself a little more comfortable. 

❛   would she rather i go ? i wouldn’t want to interrupt anything.   ❜

   ❛  Huh? Oh, thanks. I – … – !!  ❜

That’s what he gets for not looking over at her immediately. The second he does, he’s blown away by how fucking beautiful she is, and feels boyish and silly for having not paid attention, biting his nails and zoning out at first.

   ❛  … Thanks. I assure you, though, I am never lonely. You actually took the seat of the ghost I was sitting with. She’s very offended at you invading her space, but I think she’ll live. — Oh, wrong choice of words. Now she’s really mad.  ❜

despite the tears that roll down her cheeks , she still looks divine when the light catches her face. somehow, she isn’t even ugly when she cries. it’s probably got something to do with the 90% waterproof ( everything but the mascara ) - 10% non-waterproof makeup combo she’d donned to make this all seem believable. waterproof makeup keeps her looking bright - eyed and rosy - cheeked, while the other smudges without ruining the lot of it. 

there’s a slight laugh, tear - filled to make it seem all the sweeter. 

❛   are you sure ? i don’t want to be a bother --- i’m sure you’ve got patients to tend to ... i wouldn’t want to keep you from your work ---   ❜

Her coming in had startled him, and he had just been about finally formulate words to say something when she looked up as if on cue and spoke first, looking and sounding very distraught. In the suddenness of the moment, he had not seen her crying — but now he can see it plainly, and the words he had been about to say (“I’m sorry, you can’t be in here”) are immediately discarded.

    ❛  … There’s no need to apologize, miss, you have nothing to be sorry for.  ❜

In a hospital, it is not out of the ordinary to see people crying, nor is it out of the ordinary for those people to want some privacy — but coming in here, he would think, would be a last resort. He wonders what on earth would have happened to send her in here, but the majority of that curiosity is drowned out by concern.

   ❛  … If — if you’re willing to follow me, I can take you to my office. Nobody will bother you there.  ❜

she slips into the seat beside him , carrying a pair of sweet - looking cocktails in either hand. one’s for him, despite the fact he hasn’t requested it, and has no idea who she is outside of her frequent appearances at elijah’s side. caroline’s never been the type to keep her cute nose out of anyone’s business, especially not elijah, and especially when there’s a pretty boy involved.  say , if elijah doesn’t decide to cut off all his fingers any time soon, she might even make a friend out of him. 

    ❛   for you,   ❜   she says, passing the cocktail his way.   ❛   you looked so lonely, sitting all on your own.   ❜

soft sobs , hot tears are wiped away with the back of her hand.  breaths come out rushed and ragged, and she slips into the hospital’s storeroom when she thinks no one can see. 

( or , that’s the play. she’d seen the cute doctor head in there, away from the intensity of  the hospital floor, and waited a good two minutes timed by the hands of her diamond - studded wristwatch --- removed and placed delicately within her purse --- before following him inside. )

caroline rests her back against the wall , reddening eyes covered by her palm. the moment adam makes a move, her gaze flickers toward him . 

❛   oh ---   ❜   a small sniffle , thumb swiping at the corner of her tear - filled eye, careful not to smudge her makeup too severely.   ❛   i didn’t know there was anyone in here ---   ❜
