axel-levine:
It was true that he didn’t give himself enough credit at times, which was something of a hypocrisy about him because he was more than competent in what he could achieve. He had claimed the town’s drug trade in a single night after all, and reigned in those who had tried to strain against his new leadership. He was a ruthlessly determined man who knew exactly how to achieve his goals, if his daughter could take his tenacity, then perhaps he’d be alright with that after all. A grin cracked across his features when she mentioned that their little girl needed a name, and he chewed on the inside of his lip sheepishly, “I uh, actually thought of one already,” He admitted, grinning at her as he brushed his nose against hers, “You know I had a sister? Little girl of the family, I was maybe hopin’ that we might name her after her. I think she woulda liked that a lot.” He suggested softly, “Her name was Kayla.”
Gemma knew how strong Axel was, and how determined. Granted, he had shown that by taking over a drug trade, but she saw it none the less. Gemma hoped for her daughter to have those same traits, but she prayed she used it towards something other than an illegal operation. Like being a doctor. Or a lawyer- anything but a drug kingpin. Gemma just wanted her daughter to be as strong as her father, if she got that- She’d be happy.
Gemma’s grin couldn’t be hidden when Axel admitted he already had a name in mind. She had one as well- a suggestion from Ryder that she wanted to at least take into consideration for her son’s sake. Gemma nuzzled her nose against his as she listened, her heart swelling at the idea of Axel with a little sister. “I love that idea.” Gemma said gently, her fingers running through his hair. “Kayla is a beautiful name.” She agreed. “Though...Ryder had suggested Victoria as a girls name.” Gemma said, “Maybe we can use that as her middle name? Honor them both in a way.” She said. “Kayla Victoria Levine.” Gemma settled on, her smile too big to hide as she leaned forward and kissed him.

axel-levine:
“Of course in a good way.” He answered, it was all just creeping in so much closer and that was the scary thought. It was so close. The months would fly by, and then she’d be here to stay. It was exciting and frightening all at once, and Axel couldn’t help but question his suitability of being a father. But after Bryden, and after losing Gemma and the first child they lost, Axel was damn determined to make this one right. Her comment and her touch had him looking directly up at her, and he couldn’t surprise the smile that spread across his lips, “I hope that’s the only thing she inherits from me.” He answered, taking her hand as he’d gently pull Gemma down into his lap, “Everythin’ else I hope she takes after you.” Gemma was just… better. Better than he was. It certainly crossed her mind when she had first revealed her pregnancy as to what the kid might be like, and he feared that it would be born with the anger that he had harboured for so long. He pressed a kiss to her cheek, then rested his forehead against her jaw as a hand slid over the bump of her belly, “She’s gonna be amazin’.”
While she knew the answer deep down, hearing his words reassured her in ways she didn’t know she needed until that moment. It was all becoming real now, and Gemma knew the next few months would be the quickest. Before they’d have a chance to blink, there would be a baby girl in their arms and she knew neither of them were quite ready for it. Gemma let him pull her down, her eyes lighting up at the sight of that smile on his lips.
As she settled, Gemma let her arm drape over his shoulders, fingers gently playing with the hair at the base of his neck as she listened to him. While Axel wanted her to take after Gemma, there were many qualities of Axel’s that she hoped their daughter would inherit. His determination, his quick thinking, and his handiness- just to name a few. Axel didn’t give himself enough credit, and Gemma told him this often. She wanted their daughter to be as strong as her father, that was for sure.
Gemma’s eyes fell shut as his lips pressed to her cheek, her head turning into his kiss just so as she brought herself closer to him. “Yeah, she will.” Gemma agreed. A few gentle moments would pass before her eyes would open, the fingers not tangled in his hair gently running over his arm as she spoke. “You know what this means though?” she asked hypothetically. “We have to name her now.” Gemma grinned.

Brooke wasn’t really in a position to judge, she didn’t have any children herself and from a professional point of view she couldn’t decide on whether the mother denying the father the knowledge was considered bad or not. Brooke knew Gemma more personally anyway, she got the impression that she wanted to surprise Axel on her own terms, which was fair enough if you asked her. She didn’t seem concerned with Gemma’s pregnancy, but she understood that Gemma was shocked that she was able to fall pregnant again. An accident in the past, but Brooke had explained it to her that werewolf physiology made her much tougher than she realised. Had she been human? Perhaps she wouldn’t have been so lucky. Once she had smeared enough jelly onto her skin, Brooke wiped off her hands and switched over to a fresh pair of gloves so that she could start the scan. She nodded to her words, “Sounds like they’re a lively one,” She chuckled, “Maybe they’re just annoyed you’re being too still– here’s the head.” Brooke pointed towards the screen, tilting it more towards Gemma so that she could see the silhouette of her baby’s form, “Everything’s looking good, the cord is where it should be… Let’s see if we can get a good angle and find out whether we’re onto a boy or a girl.” Brooke leaned over Gemma’s stomach more, angling the scanner to try and pick up on the baby’s form, “I think…Unless it’s hiding very very well, that Axel might be getting his wish.” Brooke grinned over her shoulder to her.
Gemma saw nothing wrong with it, the whole keeping the sex from Axel thing. Fact of the matter was, he had a run planned for this weekend regardless, so Gemma would have either had to push the appointment (which she hated doing), have Brooke put the sex in a sealed envelope for her and Axel to look at together once he arrived home, or, Gemma could surprise him. Frankly, the last option was more fun for her, and she was sure Axel would love the surprise.
Gemma never thought she could get pregnant again, not with how her last pregnancy ended. There was so much trauma from that night, but Gemma was beginning to realize that most of it was emotional, and physically she was just fine. Gemma took a soft breath in as the cold gel hit her skin, her fingers holding onto her shirt just a little tighter at the sensation. Gemma chuckled at Brooke’s words. “If they’re anything like their father, it’s most likely option A.” She grinned.
Gemma’s head turned to look at the screen a little clearer. She always loved watching it, seeing the little grey blob of a baby wriggle and move at the push of Brooke’s scanner. Brooke assuring Gemma that everything was as it should be calmed her, she always worried that something would happen and that her seemingly happily ever after would vanish before her- but it hadn’t happened yet. Gemma glanced at Brooke as she moved about, trying to get a better look- but it was when she muttered the words about Axel getting his wish that Gemma’s breath halted. A baby girl. Instantly, every vague vision of a baby was suddenly clear, a little girl running around, Axel holding her- it was like everything just fell into place for her. “Oh my god.” Gemma said gently as she looked at the screen, her fingers covering her lips softly.

axel-levine:
His gaze dropped, focusing on the swell of her stomach as he processed the information. He had been quietly wishing for a daughter, desperate to have a little girl running around. Of course he’d have loved a son too, whatever they could have had he’d have adored regardless, but a little girl! A beautiful little lady to raise who’d be giving everyone hell for sure, given her parentage. He blew out his cheeks, “We’re havin’ a girl.” He echoed her words breathlessly, stepping back to let himself sit down in the chair in the corner as he just stared blankly for a few long moments. It was uncertain what he was thinking at that point, his expression was too vacant to truly judge. He blinked slowly, “It finally sunk in.” He said after a long pause, eyes flitting up towards her. It was difficult to explain, because he knew he had a kid on the way and he knew it was all life changing stuff, but knowing the sex of the baby just…Set it all in a perspective he couldn’t anticipate. They hadn’t even gotten this far last time, barely a few weeks into her pregnancy before they were wrenched away from each other. This time it was really happening. He wiped a hand over his beard with a heavy breath, swallowing hard. It made him realise how he was equal parts excited, and equal parts fucking terrified. Gemma already knew his fears over not being a good enough father, the shadow of Bryden always lingered in his mind at that, but she had been a rock in assuring him which was good. He exhaled slowly, shaking his head, “Wow.” Axel sat forward in the chair, hands reaching out to her, “Wow.” He said again.
Gemma watched him closely. Having done this whole thing before, Gemma knew the look pf pure terror on the face of a soon to be father. Xander hadn’t taken her pregnancy with Ryder seriously until she was handing him blue little hats. So, seeing Axel sink back into the chair, remaining completely silent- she knew exactly what this was. She’d never admit that she had the same moment shortly after leaving Brooke’s office. She was expecting another boy, boys she could do, she could raise a boy. But a little girl? A little girl with (hopefully) blonde curls running around, capturing the hearts of all those that came in touch with her? Gemma already knew she’d have her father, and her brother wrapped around her finger- it was inevitable.
Gemma just prayed the little angel would be that, an angel. God forbid she had the short temper of her father, or the tenacity and stubbornness of her mother. If she had any of those traits, Gemma and Axel were in for one hell of a ride. Gemma looked at him as he spoke, her hands resting on the bump in front of her. Her head nodded, her voice gentle as she stepped forward. “In a good way, I hope.” She said, admitting in her own way the worries she had about him running once it sank in. He would be a wonderful father, an amazing one, but just as she had with the first pregnancy, a small, tiny, part of her worried he would book it once it got serious.
Gemma took one of his outstretched hands in her own and moved to stand before him, her other hand coming up to rest on his shoulder as she stood in front of him. Her fingers trailed light movements over his shoulder as she looked down at him. “Let’s hope she has your eyes.” Gemma said gently, finger coming to slip under his chin and lifting gently so she could see his eyes. “No one will have a chance at denying her a single thing if she does.” She said with a soft smirk.

axel-levine:
It was honestly surprising that he noticed anything right now, given the blatant tunnel vision that he had as a result of the run. Shower and sleep were first on his agenda, but he couldn’t just bypass Gemma’s hard work either. He really did like the room, he liked the neutral greys and whites, it was way more stylish than anything he could ever come up with, but he supposed that’s why Gemma was in charge of that kind of thing, rather than him. Her defeated tone drew a confused look out of Axel, and the next thing he knew a pillow was thrust into his face and Axel flinched. He sighed into the fabric and let his arms swing to his sides in defeat, before finally reaching up to pull the pillow down and off of his face. He gave her a peculiar look and then let his gaze drop to the pillow now in his hands, “I don’t understand.” He said initially, gaze flickering between the pillow and his mate. Was he looking for something special? Had she left him some secret message sewn into the seams? He was overthinking it to the max as he sighed and shook his head, “It’s a pink pillow, I dunno what you’re exp–” And then the penny dropped. His eyes went wide as he cut himself off and looked back down, “It’s pink.” He swallowed hard, was his quiet hope for a daughter becoming reality? “Are we havin’… are we…” He fumbled with his words, looking back towards her, “We’re havin’ a girl?”
Gemma watched him as his arms fell to his side, his body clearly exhausted. Part of her wondered if she should have shown him the room in the morning, if she should have let him crawl into their half un-packed bed and just slept. But, she also knew she wouldn’t have been able to keep it in that long. The idea of laying beside him, knowing that it was a baby girl, that it was his daughter kicking her in the ribs while he slept knowing nothing, was absurd to her. He needed to know, and only after that, could she let him sleep.
Her hands fell from the soft fabric of the pillow when his own hands came up once more, taking the small fluff filled pillow in his hands. His next words had her almost gawking. She understood the tunnel vision, she did, truly. But this was another level. The fact that he was standing in a nursery, holding a pink pillow, and still didn’t get it, blew Gemma’s mind for a moment. But, she remained silent as she watched him process. Surely he would get it eventually, and just as expected- he did. The penny dropped, loud and clear.
While it took him a while to get it, and it had been mighty frustrating (her short fuse will forever be blamed on the baby inside her), seeing the look on his face as he realized he was getting his little girl was worth it all. She could see it, the wonder, the excitement, he had always been an open book with her and this was no different. Gemma felt her lips curl into a wide smile, finally able to share this with him was all she had wanted since the moment she found out. “We’re having a girl, Axel.” She confirmed for him, stepping forward towards him.

The midwife wriggled with excitement, “A surprise! That’s brilliant, and evil. I love it.” She chuckled as she set to getting the ultrasound machine ready to go as Gemma sat down. Brooke couldn’t help but laugh, “There are certainly worse curses to be inflicted with,” All babies were an absolute joy to Brooke, boy, girl and beyond, they were all perfect in their own little way, “But we can find out for sure now.”
She tinkered with the settings, but a big grin spread across her lips at the image of the gruff bastet looking over little pink onesies, “Well that’s just adorable,” She commented as she rose from her stool and pulled in the trolley with the jelly and gloves. She snapped on a pair, “Alright, let’s see that belly.” Brooke grinned, letting Gemma lift her shirt and adjust her pants so that she had full access to the bump.
Brooke liberally applied the jelly to Gemma’s stomach, and her touch alone would instil a calm throughout Gemma just as her innate ability always did. Her voice softened and deepened slightly as she spoke, “How have you been feeling otherwise? Any pains or abnormalities since your last check up?”
Gemma chuckled at Brooke’s reaction to her plan. At least someone didn’t think surprising him was cruel. Gemma knew Axel, and she knew he would be happy regardless the gender, but even though she felt she’d have another boy- the idea of Axel holding a little girl in his big gruff arms was a quiet want in the back of her mind. She had even gone as far to think of color schemes and themes for a nursery, for each gender. She had an appointment with a designer that afternoon, wanting to get the room ready before Axel returned from his run.
Gemma took a breath and lifted her shirt, her heart picking up for just a moment as it always did when she looked at the bump. Even though she had done this twice before, the idea of a little life being in there was just mind boggling for her. Brooke’s touch, as usual, calmed her- something Gemma never understood but appreciated none the less. She was anxious to know what the baby was. She had thought of every future possible, and this was the first step in knowing what her future with Axel held.
Gemma relaxed as her head fell to the side, eyes looking towards Brooke, though flickering to the screen that had yet to be turned on. “Nothing out of the usual. Lots of kicking, especially at night. I have a feeling we’re going to have a night owl on our hands.” She grinned. The idea of being kept up at all hours wasn’t one she was particularly excited about, but she knew it’d be worth it.

Axel smirked at her, he could picture that so vividly, her directing the decorators and making them redo it several times over until it was absolute perfection. There was no realisation to him just yet, he was tired from the run and just like everyone one he went on his first and primary thought was shower. Once he’d had one of those he’d feel a bit more with it. He took her hands when she reached up, helping her get up onto her feet.
He huffed, “Right, got it. I’ll make sure I’m out of the way when the decorator comes back.” He could take a hint, he’d make himself scarce and go to the warehouse or Gaslight and get some work done. At her question about the room, and what was special about it, he looked around and hooked his thumbs into the belt loops of his jeans. His eyes flowed around the room, and it was clear that Gemma had invested a lot of time and thought (and money) into the room…
Eventually his gaze rest back on her, standing there by the crib, “I like the feathers?” He nodded toward the display behind her, “And I like that deer head.” He added with a chuckle, it was quirky, he could clearly see she was going for a woodland theme. However, he didn’t catch on yet to the fact the room had a very specific colour scheme.
With her salary at the hospital, and his sizable profits from his business, Gemma was barely worried about money. The house they were standing in for example, was just about bought outright- barely a mortgage was taken out for it. Their home was bound to be nice, but still modest. There were very few things Gemma would spend considerable amounts of money on. Decorating a home, the actual home, and perhaps a car better suited for a family would be those few things.
As she leaned over and picked at one of the pillows in the crib, Gemma listened to him. His observations were nice, and while she appreciated him liking the running theme of the room, he still failed to notice the whole damn point of it. Gemma couldn’t be angry though, she’d known him long enough to know that post-run Axel was not 100% there. Gemma sighed and pulled up a pink pillow, her arms wrapping around it as she stepped forward.
“I guess I’ll just be obvious then.” She said, a tone of defeat in her words. Gemma stepped to him, her arms grasping the pillow and pushed it forward, her arms stopping only when the pillow met him square in the face. “Look at the pillow, Axel.” She said, a soft chuckle escaping her lips at the idea of him trying to look at anything with a soft little pillow shoved in his face.

axel-levine:
It wouldn’t come with much surprise that Axel was tired after a run. The business had started to reach out to smaller towns outside of Spiritvale, and rather begrudgingly he was admitting that the gift of gunnery from Citrine was proving useful. They hadn’t had any real trouble, just the expected resistance from pre-established dealers who didn’t like the idea of giving up turf until they were facing down the dark hole in the barrel of a gun. Everything had gone well after that.
The house move was of course a necessity with the baby coming, and coming so soon. It was only a couple of months out now, and Axel had been acutely aware that his one bedroom place was going to get awful crowded with the three of them. But now the old place was sold and he had helped with packing and moving - not that Axel had much in terms of possessions, he was a simple man in that regard. However, he’d ordered Gemma not to unpack too much without him. He didn’t want her straining herself. By all means drag in a helper, but he’d all but grounded her otherwise.
On his return, when he called out for her, he couldn’t help the little smile on his lips as he kicked off his boots and trudged up the stairs to the nursery. He blinked in surprise at the sight of the freshly painted and decorated room, the initial sight of it a bit of an assault on the senses given the last time he was in here it had been just a place to ditch boxes. It had been completely transformed, and as he looked around, his gaze finally rested on Gemma. He huffed in amusement, “Someone’s been busy, I see.” He remarked as he stepped closer to her, pressing a kiss to her lips, “Did you get this ready before our room? Hate to tell you love but this one-” He tapped the distinctive bump between them, his tone light and taunting, “-ain’t expected for a little while.”
Gemma remained in the chair, feet kicking her into a rocking motion as the chair glided on its hinges like butter. While she had pictured Axel sitting here, she was beginning to think this would be her second favorite place to rest her head in the house. After working all day, and then coming home to finish the room up, Gemma was loathed to admit she was actually tired. Earlier in the pregnancy, she fought the idea of stepping back from surgery for the term of her pregnancy. But, once not only Axel, but Brooke, Lyenne and Ash all chimed in, Gemma relented.
Now, she would never admit this, but she was glad she had stepped back. Cause this child was taking every ounce of energy she had in her. She used to hate when Axel went on runs, cause she’d be awake all night worried sick about him. Now, she just slept the entire time and woke once he came home. Once he rounded the corner and entered the room, Gemma grinned at the sight of him. All this time, and she still felt that pang in her heart any time she saw him- even more so after he had been away for a few days. “It was more like busy barking orders.” Gemma said as she watched him, waiting to see any sign of realization on his face- though it never came. As he leaned down and kissed her, Gemma just sighed. “I wanted it to be ready when you got home.” She said, her hands reaching out so he could help her up.
“Our room is tomorrow’s project.” A light grin spread over her lips. Once she was standing, Gemma walked over to the crib and stood there, in front of the pink dipped feathers on the wall. “What do you think?” She asked, nonchalantly. “See anything...special?” She asked, trying to get him to just look at the damn room.

brookeverity:
It had taken some serious convincing to get Gemma out of the ER, but between herself, Lee and Gemma’s tall blonde friend, it seemed they had finally managed to force her out of what was without a doubt one of the most stressful jobs in the hospital. Brooke was pleased that Gemma was taking a more clerical role now, and even more pleased that she was delegating her work load. Although one thing for sure was coming up about all this, when Gem went on maternity leave, she’d be dearly missed around the workplace.
Brooke was finishing up some paperwork as she waited for her next appointment, the aforementioned head of surgery. At least working in the same building made life a whole lot easier. No time really needed to be taken off, or need to travel across town, she just needed to go to a different part of the hospital. The knock at the door had her lift her head and a bright smile spread across her lips, one that quickly changed to a look of awe when the coffee was handed to her, “Oh Gem yougem.” She gasped softly, clasping the paper cup in both hands and accepted the warmth with a happy little wiggle.
She moved to wrap an arm around the surgeon’s shoulders in a hug, one disrupted by the considerable bump between them, “Thank you! I was gasping for a coffee, you clearly read my mind.” Brooke laughed before gesturing to the chair, “Please, take a seat. It’s an exciting day and I imagine you don’t want to waste any time. Is Axel not coming to find out the gender?” She asked as she moved to sit down at the ultrasound. Normally a tech would do this, but Brooke was plenty trained and experienced, plus with Gemma it was hardly like there’d be any issues.
Gemma grinned as the coffee was handed off, and she was quickly pulled into a half hug. The bump between them making it all but impossible to give her midwife a real hug. “You’re more than welcome.” Gemma said, taking a sip of her own tea, a fruity blend that she tried to pretend had caffeine in it, as she made her way over to the elevated chair. One thing Gemma could appreciate about being pregnant in this day and age, was that maternity clothes had come so far. She used to live in baggy t-shirts and jeans she couldn’t zip up when she was pregnant with Ryder and Abel. But now, oh now, she had options.
That day’s option was a pair of grey dress slacks, but fit for a pregnant woman, along with a navy blue blouse. The blouse itself was flowy, giving her plenty of room so she didn’t feel like she was in something skin tight. Over it was her usual white coat that she wore as head of surgery. She set her cup aside and pulled herself up, leaning back until her back met the paper covered leather of the chair behind her. Gemma looked over at Brooke. “No Axel today. I want to surprise him with this one.” She grinned. “I think it’ll be a boy. It’s all I seem to produce.” Gemma chuckled. Her and Brooke had become good friends since working together, but Gemma had never talked about her past in detail. Just that she had one. “I think Axel wants a girl. He won’t say it out loud, but you should have seen him looking at the pink outfits in the shop last week.” She sighed, her hands resting at the bottom of the bump.

handguns-n-badges:
Liam pulled out a stylus for his phone and typed quickly on the screen, making notes to what Gemma was saying but he paused and looked up at her after a moment, shock clear on his face. “Awake?” He asked. “The whole time?” That wasn’t something he’d ever heard of. He wanted, so badly to have miss heard Miss Lucas, but he knew he hadn’t. He put it in his notes as well as the fact that the needles couldn’t penetrate her skin. Who was this woman that was impervious to medical tools but a simple sword at a fake fight could? None of this made any sense.
He nodded and went back to taking notes. “Would you say the damage inside was consistent for the type of object used to create the wound?” He’d already been to talk to Dorian, he knew the man killed by Ash had been possessed, but what he wanted to know was where it had gone after and why Ash had survived when no others had.
The look on his face when he realized Ash was awake the entire time was much like the one she had seen on many others who had looked at the records of the surgery. Gemma had to tread lightly here. She had a promise to keep to Ash, that she would never tell a soul what Ash had revealed to her in the OR, but she also had to help with a police investigation, but Ash at the center of it. Frankly, it was a matter of using her words in the right way, and for a pregnant lady who had yet to be affected by the mysterious ‘pregnancy brain’, she was doing pretty well.
“For someone driven through with a sword, yes, the wounds were consistent.” Gemma said as she remained in her seat. “She had a lot of internal bleeding, it was impossible to say if it was caused by the act of being stabbed itself, or the harsh removal of the sword.” She admitted. “But regardless, other than a few pieces of debris in the wound, dirt, and the like- everything was fairly normal.” Gemma settled on. She had no explanation for the black ink like marks she had seen, nothing would explain them other than it being simply dirt from the pit the fight took place in. Gemma sighed and looked at him. “Was there anything...medically unusual found with the man from the fight?” Gemma asked, knowing full well if he couldn’t tell her she’d be able to find out on her own. Perks of being head of surgery, she had access to just about every file in the building.

“I got you. It’s gonna be okay, you’re going to be okay.” (Axel)
Gemma woke up in a cold sweat. Ever since the fayre she had been having nightmares about the future. Seeing Ash get hurt the way she did only made Gemma’s apprehension about bringing a child into the world stronger. It had become a regular thing, now that the baby way growing, that she would have nightmares. Some involved fires, some involved gun fights, all dark memories from her past. All involved her losing Axel, her child, or sometimes even both. Her mind settled when she felt his arms pulling her closer, her heartbeat slowing as he whispered to her. His voice was thick with sleep, since her sudden waking had awoken him, but he was still completely attentive even when half asleep.

“i’m fine, it’s just a flesh wound, i’ll be okay.” (Juno)
Gemma hadn’t been called in for many medical emergencies since telling Axel she was pregnant. But apparently Juno was the exception. She had her medical bag slung over her shoulder as she walked into the warehouse, eyes landing on the dark haired siren as she sighed. “Juno you have three-” she paused and tilted her head. “No, four, bullet wounds.” Gemma set the bag down. “Flesh wound my ass.” Gemma looked back at Axel, her eyes narrowing. “So much for ‘safe’.” She muttered.
