I know this was forever ago at this point, but the sheer Dissonance that tommy’s third death brought was masterful

our current idea of what ninjas are actually stems from japanese stage plays. people would dress in all black to move props and set pieces around, and audiences were trained to ignore them. so it’d be Fun and Exciting to have them turn around and act as a ninja to assassinate someone !

going into this interaction knowing full well that dream has been actively avoiding killing tommy for real (it’s not your time to die yet tommy, our story isn’t over yet, you’re here for a long time), watch tommy tell dream where his hearts are when we Know that dream will very carefully avoid killing the people he’s attacking when they aren’t supposed to die, the sheer Suddenness of tommy’s death and genuine panic in his voice. there were people who were Genuinely waiting for the laughter, for them to have to fix the flub and try to pull back into the roleplay. and when that just Didn’t Happen the sheer dissonance of what’d just happened sunk in

they weren’t confused because the scene was delivered poorly, they were able to feel the sheer wrongness of tommy’s death through the subtle cues that they’d been trained to understand but Ignore being subverted. the man in black isn’t a prop anymore, he’s a man holding a bloody knife.
