Although I support and sympathize the fact that ukraine is doing all the fighting with Russia, there is a bitter truth that we all have to learn a lesson from and not be so fixated on what if ukraine had kept the nuclear arsenals.

Ukraine needed to be building the military that we see today for a long time since the late ‘90s. That’s the lesson that Taiwan and the other Russia neighboring countries must understand.

There is no wmd or alliance substitute for strong military. As we can see, it’s all too easy for a neighboring country to engage in subversions and hostilities.

The other part is more difficult-which is to have a conviction that the neighboring country like Russia or China have long term hostile intent. That any economic ties with them will only fuel their hostile ambitions.

The civilians do have a responsibility to engage carefully in foreign businesses and not day dream about the possibility of straddling the best of both worlds. That’s the biggest problem right now with the citizens of Taiwan.

People in Taiwan think they can just freely do business in China and then run back to Taiwan when things are going wrong. It’s too late by that time. The same goes for all the countries who continue to empower Russia & China by trade-it’s like grooming a serial killer.

In New York and London, owners of gleaming office towers are walking away from their debt rather than pouring good money after bad. The landlords of downtown San Francisco’s largest mall have abandoned it. A new Hong Kong skyscraper is only a quarter leased.

The creeping rot inside commercial real estate is like a dark seam running through the global economy. Even as stock markets rally and investors are hopeful that the fastest interest-rate increases in a generation will ebb, the trouble in property is set to play out for years.

I recall stories about house-flippers who were drowning in high-interest mortgages they never expected to need to float for more than a year, simply leaving the keys to perfectly good homes in the mailbox and walking away.
