HEY ARTISTS!
Do you design a lot of characters living in not-modern eras and you’re tired of combing through google for the perfect outfit references? Well I got good news for you kiddo, this website has you covered! Originally @modmad made a post about it, but her link stopped working and I managed to fix it, so here’s a new post. Basically, this is a costume rental website for plays and stage shows and what not, they have outfits for several different decades from medieval to the 1980s. LOOK AT THIS SELECTION:
OPEN ANY CATEGORY AND OH LORDY–
There’s a lot of really specific stuff in here, I design a lot of 1930s characters for my ask blog and with more chapters on the way for the game it belongs to I’m gonna be designing more, and this website is going to be an invaluable reference. I hope this can be useful to my other fellow artists as well! :)
#!!!!#EXTREMELY HELPFUL OMG#this and nationalclothing.org are literally the best resources for cultural and period specific clothing#def bookmarking this

One thing that's so wild about that dream sequence of Persephone and Hades married together with their child is that that sequence happens directly after the flashback sequences of Ares taking advantage of Persephone.
Like, we get this MULTIPLE EPISODE FLASHBACK of Ares pretending he can't read so he can get closer to Persephone, close enough that he can get her to make out with him, and then she catches onto his ruse, and calls Demeter to kick his ass (YES QUEEN).
And then we cut briefly back to the present, Eros asks Persephone what she's making and she hints that she's making "extra" presumably for Hades.
And then OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE, we cut to Hades dreaming about being Persephone's husband and having his children with her.
And don't get me wrong, I get that this is a romance, Rachel's trying to show just how infatuated Hades is with her, it's supposed to be an "awww!!!" moment (and it definitely was the first time I ever saw that scene way back when I was still a huge fan of the comic).
But he has known this woman just barely over a WEEK. And on this particular day, it's her freaking birthday, and her first day actually working at his company to boot. And he admits to himself, upon realizing he didn't know that it was her birthday, that he BARELY KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT HER.
And of course, we don't get to see any of this from Persephone's perspective, just from the perspective of Hades being a sad sap over the fact that he doesn't know the girl he just dreamt about knocking up as well as he thought he did after... a week of knowing her.
Like, there's being infatuated, and then there's just being flat out obsessed, and Hades fits the definition of obsessed so strongly they might need to come up with a new word for it.
And unfortunately, we never get any real resolution to this. He repeats this again in S2 when he's trying to find "the owner of this comb" after Persephone disappears, and yet STILL he doesn't make good on it because we never see him make any active efforts to get to know her throughout the second and third season. He just goes from dreaming about being her husband and barely knowing who she is to being her husband and barely knowing who she is. I guess Rachel might have assumed readers would just accept the marriage as some kind of instant level-up that would entail Hades knows everything about her now, but it goes without saying that that makes for really boring romance.
Everything about their relationship is tethered to how she makes him feel and what she does for him, and so it really does rob Persephone of any actual agency throughout the story, ironically sometimes even less agency than she had in her original myth in which she was literally kidnapped.
If any one of these scenarios (Let alone all of them) was shown from Persephone's perspective as opposed to Hades', it would've made a world of difference.
We all know the irony of LO's mixed messaging & inconsistent narrative as a supposed "feminist retelling" told from "Persephone's side of the story," while in reality it's quite literally anything but. This is very evident in all the times we see Hades developing feelings, lusting after, dreaming about, etc. Persephone, and the fact that it's rarely ever shown to be vice-versa, when they really should've been if she was truly the main character of the comic. Hades' feelings for her, marrying her, & even starting a family with her are brought up plenty of times. But Persephone's thought process behind all this is either just barely touched on or ignored altogether.
Why is it that for all the dozens of sequences & even whole episodes focused on Hades' developing feelings for Persephone, we couldn't have had more than handful of fleeting moments dedicated to doing vice versa? Or an amount of Hades pinup panels (so to speak lol) from Persephone's POV more equal to the countless pinup panels of Persephone?? Or even her showing a desire for a relationship/marriage/children prior to establishing Hades as her only priority in life???
I firmly believe the story & Persephone's character would've benefited immensely if scenes like this were depicted from her point of view instead of, or at least in addition to, Hades'. It would've given her much more agency & depth to learn how & why she thinks the way she does on certain topics independent of the influence of Hades, or any other character for that matter. But unfortunately, RS wrote LO to be eerily Lolita-coded storytelling-wise, with all the information fed to us through the eyes of the perverted man lusting after the young protagonist he doesn't actually care to know... except carnally. (×_×)
I personally don't see anything fundamentally wrong with imagining marriage, children, etc. with someone you have feelings for btw. BUT, as with anything, context is very important here. In Hades' case, it is completely wrong bc 1.) He merely lusts for her, he doesn't actually love her in the least, 2.) He's only known her for 2 weeks and doesn't know or care whether she wants these things for herself or not, and 3.) He's literally 100x her age and is projecting his desires for marriage & children onto a "barely legal" 19 year-old. (・_・;)
If RS really wanted to put the focus on Persephone & not make Hades a total creep, it really wouldn't have been that hard to just... flip the POV around?? Or at least show that they mutually wanted those things for themselves beforehand??? But putting the spotlight on Persephone was never her priority in the first place, she only did it to insert herself into her character; she just went nah, bc... Humbert-Lolita self-insert fantasizing is more important. (¬_¬;)
Since we'd obv never get this kind of thing in canon, it's something I very much want to elaborate on in my rewrite bc, again, Persephone should consistently be the main character of her own story for Gaia's sake. Giving her the agency to decide for herself what she wants both in a relationship & life in general is super important in her characterization to me, and even more so everything she goes through to come to whatever her conclusions may be. I've conceived plenty of ideas (both original & ones taken/tweaked from LO) to shift or mirror the POVs of the characters and hopefully create a better understanding of Persephone as an individual, from none other than her own perspective as the true protagonist of the story.
#depth & nuance are severely needed in the characters of today's media#< prev tag#lore olympus critical#lo critical#anti lore olympus

being an indigenous person who's prone to autistic rage writing about their personal experiences through an indigenous character who's prone to autistic rage is really goddang difficult b/c white colonizers ruined it for us when they decided to typecast indigenous people as savages with anger issues
like yeah my indigenous blorbo has anger issues but i promise it has nothing to do with her being indigenous, she's just autistic and overstimulated in a world that doesn't have a word to describe autism yet 😭
#off topic#idk this is just something that's really gonna suck dick when it comes to writing uzuki#she's an absolute dumpster fire of a person but so much of it is because of external circumstances that influenced her growing up#from being raised in an all-white community separate from her culture#to constantly being one bad texture away from lighting all her clothes on fire#and i gotta find ways to express that without it becoming automatically perceived as “she's an indigenous stereotype”#not that perception is anything i can control#it's just a sticky situation to be in LOL

I don't know how to explain it but
Originals Persephone: Toddler coded
Canvas Persephone: Teenager coded
kiiiind of but also she's a toddler in the canvas version too sometimes LMAO

That said, Canvas Persephone definitely still had a lot more personality and agency than Originals Persephone, before she was reduced into a helpless baby LMAO
Like, compare this to how she wound up being in these exact same scenes in the Originals version-
She was still infantilized / sexualized in the pilot version but the Originals version really does turn her into straight up pedo-bait at times 💀😭
And honestly, I don't think that was entirely Rachel's fault either, though she definitely had a hand in it (as we can see through her pre-LO art she was still VERY into drawing infantalized girls/women) I wouldn't be shocked if Webtoons was also pushing her to flanderize Persephone and Hades in more extreme ways to appeal to their demographic of teenage readers and middle-aged women (i.e. girls who fantasize about being with rich older men because it makes them feel 'mature'; and women who fantasize about being young again and pursued by a rich and powerful man who aren't their boring husbands LMAO)
Between Rachel's fixation on "women who are equally devious and innocent" and Webtoons' focus on pushing age gap fics, it's a match made in hell 💀😭😆
