HI! I’m pretty new to this, (i only read to ep 40ish so far 😛) but so far it’s sooo much better than LO. I remember reading it like three years ago, thinking it had some??? potential, but it just fell off the rails like immediately.

anyways now I’m reading this, it’s peak, the artstyle is so much more consistent, the relationship between hades and penelope isn’t forced?? (LO they fell in love like ep 2)the age gap isn’t problematic,(I’m glad that the Aphrodite kidnapping thing didn’t happen) , apollo isnt an SA’er and is just a slightly egoistic guy, hecate actually makes sense, minthe isnt portrayed as the only one in the wrong, Demeter isnt shit on, etc etc

I was in the same boat with LO. Realizing what LO could have been - what I was hoping it would be when I was still a massive uncritical fan of it back in the day - is definitely the driving force behind LR. So I'm glad it's connecting with so many readers who shared the same feelings and were wanting the same things out of it.

Do you plan (and did you, since I didn't got that far in comic) to include Leuce in your story, since she shows up in LO, but not in Greek mythology?

Can't really say much without spoiling but-

While I did say in the beginning that I wouldn't touch much of the last half of S2 / entirety of S3 when rewriting LO - which includes Leuce - I do have plans for her, and those plans have actually already been underway for a while now, whether folks have noticed or not (I do think a handful of readers have). I just saw a perfect opportunity and had to take it, one that I'm surprised Rachel didn't. But then again, she clearly just threw Leuce into the plot at the last second without any regard for her original myth or the fact that she's Roman in origin.

I just hope that when she's eventually revealed (very very soon btw!!!) y'all will enjoy how I decided to interpret and translate her into the setting of LR :'3

Like ik you must get a lot of haters due to your Lore Olympus Rekindle series.

Cause of the cult Rachel Smyth has brainwashed.

But like for other fandoms as well? It sounds so draining.

Short answer: same way I deal with a screaming toddler lmao tell them we can talk when they get through feeling their big feelings and leave them to process 😆 (idk if that's actually the best way to deal with a toddler but it's worked for the haters so far lmao)

Long answer: to be less reductive, honestly, I shockingly don't get many complaints or 'haters' so to speak around here, especially as time goes on and people move on from the comic as a whole. I think anyone who might be offended by LR existing has either a.) moved on from LO, or b.) has moved on from giving LR their attention because I've been at it nearly 3 years now and obviously them disagreeing with it existing isn't going to prevent it from existing; these are people who often argue that you should just "stop reading" if you have problems with a work, so I'm hoping that people who don't like LR have taken their own advice 🤣

Or y'know, secret option c.) there's a secret ULO-like server/space for LR where the anti-LR's congregate that I don't know about and that's fine too LOL

Most of the time though, I find anyone who talks shit about it is honestly not doing it out of a completely malicious place. Most of it comes from a place of just not understanding fanfiction in this kind of form, and an internalized need to "protect" creators, which is valid.

Concerning the first point, I find nowadays most people are used to fanfiction solely existing on sites like AO3, where they're neatly tagged with content warnings and a grocery list of tropes. So when they see a piece of fanfiction that tries to also meet the original source material on its own playing field - in this case, LR is actually trying to be a regularly updated comic like LO, in the same art style and with a lot of the same plot beats - it kinda doesn't click and they automatically assume it has to be with bad intent, especially when it's in the vein of being a "rewrite". It doesn't fit their specific understanding of what makes "fanfiction" so when something like LR falls outside of that, they have to come up with reasons and justifications for it to not exist so that the scope of "fanfiction" can return to fitting within their understanding (rather than just, y'know, expanding their understanding).

Though I do find it odd and funny at the same time when I get people who are either a.) not fans of LO or b.) are fellow anti-LO / LO haters who still don't understand where LR exists. Like they're fine with talking shit and repeating unsubstantiated talking points about how LO is "directly inspired by Lolita" (not true, we haven't proved that lmao) and other surface level criticisms that they have no context to, but apparently draw the line at someone making a fan rewrite comic for themselves and others like them who were disappointed by the outcome of the original work.

IDK it just gets into weird morality policing, and I do think it's an internalized morality thing, because a lot of the people who get upset about it seem to do so from a very personal place - they almost take what I'm doing as some sort of threat towards themselves and their own work, with thoughts and sentiments like, "When is someone gonna do this to me and my work???" and "Well how would YOU like it if someone did that to you???" even though that's frankly ignorant of the reasons why LR exists and why we even talk about LO in the first place.

Like I promise you, LO is an extremely specific brand of bad that compels people to talk about it to the lengths they do, it's not bad for the same reasons any other hobbyist webcomic on Canvas might be bad, and definitely not to the extent that we've discussed LO because not many comics exist on the same foundations that LO does. My creating a (foe)fic version of a huge critically-acclaimed NYT bestselling webcomic frankly has nothing to do with you, so please, take a breather and relax, no one's coming for you 😅

For every single instance in which I've created a comic like this (of which there have been... one, and it's LR), there are literally shitloads of comics that I've simply stopped reading after I stopped enjoying them, and that's not only because they weren't worth my time to relentlessly criticize, but mostly - I never loved those comics as much as I loved LO to bother. Ultimately it's important to remember that my criticisms from LO are so intense because my love for it was so intense... and still is, it's just different now.

And all of that is, essentially, what I try to communicate whenever someone who doesn't like my work engages with me. It's fine if they don't like LR. It's fine if they don't like the concept of "fix-it-fics" or "foefics" whatever you want to call them altogether. I don't need them to like my work - I just want to help broaden their horizons a little more because I find a lot of the time when they get upset about LR existing, it's simply because they've never seen something like LR before, and their first reaction is rejection / fear. There are a lot of fix-it-fics out there, stuff that even they've probably read never realizing that it was made by an anti within their respective fandom. I think LR just throws them off because it's not buried in the piles of AO3 fics, it's trying to stand out as a comic that's actually attempting to mimic the original art style. Sure, I could have just made an original Greek myth retelling comic in my own style, but that would have defeated the point for me.

And that's, of course, when I choose to engage. There are people who have been honest and open about their feelings, and have actually shifted their perspective of the work and what I do after we've engaged and they've gotten to know my perspective more. Doesn't mean they go from disagreeing from LR to loving it but we've at least opened a dialogue and reached a mutual understanding that what I'm doing isn't meant to hurt them or anyone else, it's just a Tumblr comic.

And then of course there are people who are literally just out to try and ruin my day. If I let them, they win. So I don't. I let their big feelings exist for them, and I keep them out of my own feelings. Simple as that.

Besides, did Rachel ever let her haters stop her from making LO? Its quality sure got worse and maybe you can credit that to her ripping off her nose to spite her face, but she still saw it through to the end and she'll always have that accomplishment in spite of what people have to say about her. There are already way too many mediocre writers and artists being handed awards simply for being privileged and showing up, so I'm not gonna give up what I'm doing just because some people with big feelings on the Internet don't like it. I owe myself more than that, and I owe my own readers more than that.

Even if all it ever amounts to is bringing a few people joy, the positive it puts into the world outweighs the negative. That's what I try to focus on and it hasn't steered me wrong yet :')

I mean they're definitely still just re-skinned Hades and Persephone but at least the fact they look like human beings automatically makes them more unique. Especially with the lady and the scar running over her face, cool shit. And the fact that they both have NORMAL FUCKING ANATOMY-

I’m gonna grieve a darker skin Persephone 😭 She was so beautiful and with her skin being brown instead of hot pink, a lot of the colors in the webtoons wouldn’t have clashed so bad

Those weren't the only drawings of brown/dark-skinned Persephone either !

It's so wild how Rachel seemed to actually grasp drawing darker skin tones only to suddenly stop drawing them entirely. IDK if coloring the gods neon colors was a way to "escape" from skin tone representation or what (she failed if that was the case, LO is still full of sketchy racial coding like through the nymphs) but the fact that even Eleanor's Deathbed is returning to the neon-colored color scheme frankly has me pretty bummed.

In all honesty, after working on LR, it IS a weird feeling to shift back to real normal human skin colors after working in neon for so long LOL Like I'll be painting a drawing of Uzuki or Mitsuhiro and I'm like "why does this feel weird" and I'm realizing it's just because I spend most of my time nowadays painting Kore and Hades LMAO So maybe she just prefers to paint with the neon skin tones after doing LO for so long. And it wasn't like she varied her skin tones much even when she did draw normal humans, she was a very Tim Burton-esque painter where the majority of her characters were porcelain white.

But Rachel also just isn't someone who easily moves from a comfort zone, evidently. Either she doesn't want to change things up for the sake of her audience - because she's known for the neon-colored characters - even though now would be a PERFECT time to do so, or she doesn't want to change things up simply because the neon colors are what she's known for the past 5+ years.

Either way, it would be amazing to see her paint like this again, but I'm not holding my breath 😅
