The path I chose was not easy, but it has been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling decisions of my life. Paediatric cardiac surgery is a niche that blends the best of science, medicine, and compassion, and it is one that requires a unique kind of motivation.

I have undergone meticulous training at the prestigious AIIMS, New Delhi, for my super specialization in Cardiac Surgery. My decision to specialize in paediatric cardiac surgery was profoundly influenced by the mentorship under the esteemed Dr. P. Venugopal at AIIMS Hospital. Dr. P. Venugopal, a visionary in the field, firmly believed in training his students to become versatile cardiac surgeons, capable of performing both adult and paediatric cases with equal expertise. His guiding philosophy was that a surgeon should never have to turn down a case due to a lack of skill or experience.

Today, I am proud to work in close association with Genesis Foundation India, an organization that shares the same values of skill, empathy, and service. A Heart Saved Through CSR Support

2-year-old Sundar (name changed) had been suffering from noisy breathing (Stridor) since birth and required multiple hospitalizations for respiratory infections. An Ultrasound test showed that he had a right-sided aorta, which is normally located on the left side of the body. Further tests revealed a rare congenital defect called vascular ring. Given the complexity of his condition, surgery was the only option, but his family, daily wage labourers, could not afford the treatment. With the help of Genesis Foundation’s CSR partner, Sundar underwent a high-risk open-heart surgery. The surgery lasted seven hours and he was discharged on the 10th day. He continues to do well post-surgery.

Deconstructing Congenital Heart Defects

Heart diseases are generally associated with adults for instance it’s quite frequent we hear someone had a heart attack or the heart just stopped beating. It’s hard to associate a young child with heart disease. Congenital heart disease is an abnormality of the heart in which the newborn baby is born with a defect in the heart. This maybe a hole in heart by birth or another type of defect. The defect can be in terms of functionality or structural deficits. Which means that the baby’s heart is unable to function normally. For example, there can be mixing of oxygenated or deoxygenated blood due to some wall defect or there can be some aberrant shape or a part like one of the chambers can be missing. It is worrisome because these defects unless of gross and apparent symptoms like breathlessness and blue turning of baby can be missed. And it is not until the baby turns into an adult that these symptoms become obvious.
