Not sure how to break this to you, but we already do a lot of gene editing and most of it is for the purposes of breaking a gene to figure out how it works, or making very specific parts of animals fluoresce under UV light. I’m not counting all the edits done to make plants more resistant to pests and herbicides or whatnot because you specifically mentioned critter creation

science-fiction always implies gene-editing and critter creation would always either result in xenomorphs or jurassic park 1:1 recreations of what people thought dinosaurs would look like in 1920. a more realistic approach to the topic would be to acknowledge the first thing we will do is give snow leopards gills. and then we will let them swim
