I’m finally getting back into the swing of actually being productive. After a very rough year mental health wise and the covid19 crisis, I haven’t done much at all. I’m taking small steps and trying not to do too much at once so I won’t get overwhelmed, but it does feel nice to study again.

dark academia hobbies
write letters; to your future self, to friends and family, to fictional characters, store these letters under floor boards and read them again months later.
start a notebook in which you analyze films, books, song lyrics, and anything else close to you. decorate this book with newspaper clippings, fancy paper, etc
write poetry; it doesn't matter if it's good or bad, as long as it means something to you. read poetry as well, find vintage poetry books in libraries and bookstores.

07.23.20 // it rained today!! like furious sheets of rain, with thunder and lightning–it was beautiful. and makes me want to join my dog in sleeping all day but alas, i have to work on my dissertation intro. my PI just sent back edits on my first draft and there’s still a lot of marble to carve away before this statue is revealed.

some things we should start romanticising
bike rides, especially when listening to music. the wind in your hair, the songs in your ears, every sound being quiet and living in your own bubble of lyrics.
sitting in a bus. you’re going back home, maybe you’re reading a book or just looking outside of the foggy glass.
making tea. warming up the water, bringing it to a simmer and closing the gas, pouring it into a ceramic mug, the perfume of tea leaves: it’s a ritual.
buying a new book. walking in a book store, reading the first page of a book that sounds interesting, choosing a book because of its cover, never having heard of that book.
reading the last page of a book. that one doctor who episode where the doctor says he rips the last page of each book he reads, reading the last line and feeling like all the air in your lungs is gone.
that one specific moment when you are coming back from a party and you’re walking the few last steps before getting home.
writing your name on a new notebook. scribbling messy letters or trying hard to make it look pretty.
tying shoe laces. where are you even going?
picking a flower. getting off the road and into a patch of grass just to pick a yellow wild flower, pressing it in a book, or putting it in a glass of water.
finally getting to bed. the cold bedsheets, closing your burning eyes, the small sounds of the city.

i know we joke a lot about wanting to read very specifically niche content and when that doesn’t exist,, the never ending pain of having to do work and write it ourselves but,,,,,, that’s truly the beauty!!! of writing. if we don’t see that super specific niche content,, we can make it from scratch!!! we are creators. we can create these crazy and wild and perfectly imperfect worlds that we haven’t seen yet and tailor and fix what we have seen but want represented better. we can create the wild utopias and crazy dystopias of our dreams and give our characters the futures and happiness we ourselves seek. we can create our own happiness. and despite of—or in spite of all the hard work that entails—that happiness will always be worth it.

preparing for my first zoom class today - cultural geography II
my lectorer is uploading presentation videos beforehand and we discuss them in the zoom classes - and I love that! We actually get to hear most of the content twice, and that’s gonna be nice in terms of the upcoming exams at the end of the term!
stay healthy!
