My rationalisation of the minigames is that our MC takes odd jobs with the skills she learned from hacking Hannahs cloud.
The tasks are silly and not worth our time, but they pay the bills (i.e. give gold).
I just wanna say like. I know perfectly this idea is not perfect. Like, why would we keep losing connection?? Again, I don't know Moonvale's full story. And this is just the best that I can come up with given the information. And I know it would be challenging for Everbyte to adapt this, and that's okay.
Love this, love Everbyte, love all of you <3
I don't know what I'm saying at this point. My brain is like fried from exams

You could have just asked me because I am a dumbass and misclicked.
Side story spoiler ahead!
So, the wonderful @reds-ramblings asked a very interesting question, and I was thinking about it as well.
But I fear no one told Ash about Jake's name because why would you betray him like that. </3
But I broke my own heart and told her. (Let me be dramatic okay)
Sadly, nothing happened. And I was planning to wait until Ash wrote with Charlie about us. But of course the mini games knew that I'm curious so they decided to be shitty again.
Anyway, if the chat with Charlie and Ash turns out differently because of it, I'm just going to reblog this here and show you then

Moonvale
Because nobody asked for my opinion... I'm going to give it anyway.
Thought, pros and cons of the new game. It's not super spoilery but I'm going to hide it just in case.
First, I would like to say I was NOT at all expecting the new story to be a continuation of Duskwood or to even be a similar story to Duskwood. Everbyte made it very clear this is not what Moonvale was meant to be. I went into this with a completely open mind and tried my best not to compare Moonvale to Duskwood. I was still disappointed. There were several changes Everbyte made that were great but they were overshadowed by the negative changes.
Pros:
1. There is now an LGBTQ option when you enter your name and Duskwood code. This doesn't apply to me so I'm not sure what it changes in the game but this option was needed.
2. You can use diamonds to skip mini-games. I would have spent money just to do this if everything else didn't cost so much.
3. This is just my opinion but the mini-games seemed to be a bit easier.
4. The Duskwood side story. It's not much now but I would play the game just for that. Was it worth spending money to finish sooner? No.
Cons:
1. Money money money. There's no premium package that unlocks everything. I get that Everbyte has to make money off of the game but the content wasn't worth what they were charging!
2. I found the characters really unlikable. Eric was alright, but the rest I couldn't care less for. I started out liking charlie but he quickly became annoying. I really wanted to like Ash but something about her just rubbed me the wrong way. Where was the character development here?!
3. The story line! The Billy Blake story was long and pointless. Maybe it will be important later on but it definitely could have been shorter. It took like 3 mini-game sessions just to get through it! When he said "should I continue" I literally yelled no!
4. The story line! It was unoriginal. Some parts felt very copy, paste, change a few lines and here's a new story.
5. The mini-games. I didn't like how it forced you to play them at set times. One of the things I liked about Duskwood is that you could play all the mini-games in each set and then not have to stop the story so much.
6. AI! I get that they don't have actors for all of the characters but why not use stock images like before? Why do they have to use AI?!?!
7. You can't rewatch ANY of the videos or phone calls. They literally disappear. Yet somehow they are "saved" so you can send them to other characters.
8. We waited 2 years for that?! It had the potential to be amazing and even better than Duskwood. We know Everbyte can make an amazing game Duskwood is proof of that. This did not live up to those standards
I'm sure there's more but this is all I can think of at the moment.

You have got to be kidding me....
People, a warning:
They are attacking the actors of Eric and Adam, here is a Twitter thread
Please, let's avoid these things, the actors are not to blame for anything that has happened with Everbyte

Do I enjoy that we do not have to play the same mini games over and over after restarting an episode? Yes!
Are those same mini games the reason behind my advanced descend into madness? ... Also yes 😵‍💫

The Heist ch. 33
Master list
T. W: cussing, angst, breaking point.
A. N: part of this chapter was written from Jake's pov but I failed to keep up with Jake's wordings yk😭so I got on with MC 's instead👉🏻👈🏻
I haven't deleted it though so if you are interested let me know and I will scrapp it up and post it and only hope you like it!💐😇
"god dammit!"
I had a comeback to Kyle's sudden cussing no sooner than the car made screeching sounds and completely stopped.
"You needn't cuss after you have had the feul light warning on almost since this ride started. " Jake voiced at him in calm tone,
spontaneously my eye darted to the machinery ahead of Kyle and got Jake's point.
Kyle though seemed irritated with his right leg batting nervously and I instantly recognized Jake's tone was actually his too calm tone.
I looked at Jake and almost regretted my last interrogatory move.
He looked out the window to nowhere in the darkness around us and he was near seething despite his face showing little to no emotion at all.
Well it's obvious it's not just the car.
I sighed and rested back in my seat.
"It doesn't always mean that gas is actually low."
Kyle answered Jake in muffled tone that has no way to compete with Jake's. I saw Jake give him a look that is worse than murderous.
He was choosing flight mode over fighting Kyle and I understand why.
Jake's flight mode is less favorite than his final executed action. But I think I was alone in such case.
I decided to interact "where have you got to with the drive, Jake?"
"It checks out right with mark's statement." He paused and finally answered.
Now he had already chosen the flight mode with me alright.
To think of how much confused and weary he left me feeling with all the secrets of his past, not just the lie about mark? How good would it be to try anger as feeling now?
Anxiety though would always have the win over the anger.
I would rather be just anxious than angry and using My flight mode with Jake because it would involve actual flight ✈️.
I shake my head in a bitter smile.
"What statement?" Kyle asked.
I managed to reply this time.
"No Kyle. This right here and Now is recesse for setting things up and straight and at this point, I can't get my head around to even trust you. "
His fist clenched around the now disabled steering wheel.
" I can't decide to trust in anything either of you say to me. "
They both turned to me. Both in disbelief but Kyle was very defensive and jake in subtle anger but some concern.
Or I wished it there.
"In fact now we all have literal miles to walk so whenever you are ready to tell me where exactly we are heading give me a call." Feeling close to tears I opened the door beside me and exited the car.
The fresh air hit me with that smell of the woods as I walked headlessly, not even looking back to answer Jake's abrupt and miffed question.
Was that how Hannah felt? Alone and lost but somehow a bit hopeful as the dawn nears down..
But at least she had a car then,
I could rather be as much lost as Jennifer.
"Where to, mc?"
I must have tuned out Jake getting out of the car and maybe him calling out for me before he grabbed my arm and made me face him
One look at the car dead by the side of the road and a discreet figure of Kyle in the driver's seat brought me back to the presence.
"I guess I just needed some fresh air." I told Jake as he freed my arms.
I looked back at him and I saw the apple in his throat wiggle as he swallowed and I felt my senses all spring to life.
"We should talk about what happened Tonight."
"Okay." I answered managing a smile.
"what Kyle did, I don't see how we can trust his motives anymore." He started to share.
I must have too late realized he was waiting for me to say the next line. So he recalibrated
: "not for the sudden sister kidnapping situation or his allegiance with us altogether."
What sudden situation?! Kyle let us know mark has his sister from the sister.
"Why are you saying sudden? He told us at the start?"
" No." He replied calmly. "it's because there is no proof of it. is there?"
"This is not his proof to present" I countered.
Mark did the kidnapping or did Kyle kidnap his own sister?
"Was he sent a picture of his sister in captivity ?Did you see it yourself?" He asked in assertive tone, emphasizing each letter.
I just realized I made a mistake. " I believed him." I was tensed by all the suspicious questions but I can't be too surprised by it.
" But that is no where near enough to convince you, is it? " I bickered.
Stiffling back as much as possible erupting disheartenment at him for telling me half truths all the time.
A long pause on Jake's side made me pay attention to him. He looked at loss of words. That is big for Jake.
"I am sorry I missed that sort of detail."
I apologized and explained
"at the time we hardly managed to convince you of our plan,.." "You never had." He interrupted. "bargaining with your safety is something I am never able to get past." I listened and let his words wash over me.
"however, with your will into it, I am necessitated to take precautions and be extremely careful." He continued shaking his head expressively in bewilderment.
I looked down trying to hide my smile as I remembered I always only read his words over and over.
Hearing him now was as mesmerizing as a beautiful melody. He voiced everything, his power and assertion along with honest emotion. Warmth along with honor filled me as I remembered I am one of few select that he could talk like that to.
"But even that I cannot accomplish while you don't let me in on important unfoldings."
Through my infatuation, I looked at him. Carefully checking out if he is upset.
"do you always actually speak like this?" His head turned in something like disappointment and I instantly scolded my everly overbearing curiosity
"like what?"
"like very smart but not too smart to understand." I explained.
"I recognize my own phrasing can take a little getting used to." He muttered.
"I rather always liked it." I told him with a smile.
I extended my hand to feel his.
It was comfortably colder than mine: "now even more so."
He returned my smile oh so shy and sweet.
"thank you for always having my back." I reclaimed line of our conversation.
I realize it even more now I cherish him so much I decided to protect him from the least uncomfortable feelings.
He nodded as he looked towards the car.
"Why did you not tell the news about Kyle's sister?"
"because that would have made you change your mind about going with Kyle's plan." I answered him. Subtly apologetic again.
I went solo with Kyle's information but doesn't he keep me in the dark about countless things?
"Maybe but we certainly would have reached for decision together." The blueness of his eyes now darkened and tainted gold by the faint car light.
Bitterness erupted into me right as I thought of how much under his spell I am.
I felt my heart beats in my throat as the question slid out and off my tongue: "will you ever tell me the truth about you and mark?"
"Right so," I bit back a snap at Kyle for his interruption "just in case neither of you seen it coming, spoiler alert, we have to walk to a motel I found near on the maps."
"What if there isn't?" I asked
"Then, we hitchhike of course"
"fantastic!" Obviously sarcastic.
Dissonance showed in Kyle's movements as he averted his gaze ahead of us:"I will lead the way."
"So,?"
I asked jake again.
"when we get to the motel. I will explain everything."
He kissed my forehead and my eyes burnt despite the cold.
When he got beside me to walk on the edge of the road, my feelings all became hopefull and serene.
I can fight for us.
He gave me his signature heart melting smile as I held his hand and walked by his side.
Not long after we were relieved to see the motel sign that a phone rang.
Kyle realized it's his own phone so he checked it.
We saw Kyle suddenly stop staring, fixatedly at his phone screen.
Jake and I looked at each other and I spoke up:"anything wrong?"
"Mmmm, I think maybe.." he stopped.
"what is it Kyle?!" I snapped at him.
His answer was fast although incomprehensive
" It's mark saying: 'apologies, we got the wrong sister' "
@red-writes-stuff your turn now 😉

The Heist - Chapter 30
Jake and I are sitting on the trunk of a fallen tree only a few steps away from the side of the road. He has been brooding silently since I finished filling him in on my conversation with Kyle.
The little light from the moon above us is almost completely swallowed by the dense forest around us. So I can’t see the expression on his face. Though, it is safe to assume that it is not a happy one.
Suddenly, he gets up and starts pacing back and forth. Watching him, I feel a shiver running up my spine and I start to seriously regret my decision to wear this flimsy pencil skirt and not bring a coat. We must have been here waiting for Kyle to pick us up for almost an hour.
I wrap my arms around myself and rub my cold hands on the thin fabric of my blouse. As Jake passes by me again, he tosses me his hoodie. But still no word from him. Gratefully, I put on the sweater. The fabric is still warm and cozy from the heat of Jake’s body.
I continue waiting. Minutes pass by that feel like eons. I am just starting to consider risking an excursion into the bushes behind me, when Jake stops in his tracks abruptly, staring into the direction we came from. I get up and join him. “What is it?” I ask. “I thought I saw a light between those trees.” For a long moment, there is nothing. But then I hear a motor. Seconds later, two headlights cut through the blackness around us. They are so bright that I have to shield my eyes against the glare. A car is approaching us slowly. It stops before us and when the driver’s car is being opened the cabin lights turn on and we finally recognize Kyle stepping out of the vehicle.
Jake leaves my side and stomps in Kyle's direction. He grabs the front of Kyle's jacket and pushes him with his back against the side of the car. “Have you completely lost your mind? How dare you bring MC in such danger for your own agenda behind my back. She could have been killed!” Jake exclaims. Kyle struggles to straighten up but Jake pushes him right back against the car with a thump.
I rush to their side and try to separate the two men. “I take it you brought Jake up to speed.” Kyle says. Jake takes half a step back. Before he can say anything I ask: “Did you get your sister? Is she okay?” “Yes. She is in a safe location and cared for.”
“You two do realize how fucked we all are?” Jake scoffs.”The second Mark realizes that she is gone, he will know that you are working with us, Kyle. There won’t be a doubt that anything we discussed tonight is bullshit and he will come after us all.”
A joyless laugh escapes me. “If only I knew a man that risked everything, including his own safety and freedom, to save his sister.” That takes the wind out of Jake's sails. He turns around and the look on his face could cut glass. Then something shifts. Is that even a smile tucking at the corners of his mouth?
“We should get out of here.” Without waiting for a reply, Jake walks around the car and drops into the passenger seat. I shrug and climb into the car as well. As we drive off, Jake turns around to me. “We need to get in touch with Christopher as soon as possible and see what he found out about the FBI’s position on Agent Michael's death and the state of our deal.”
I nod and fish my phone out of my pocket. But before making the call a thought shoots through my mind. “But we don’t have the hard drive and won’t likely get to the information anymore. Mark won’t let us get anywhere close to him or his property. What could we possibly still have to offer to the FBI?”
“You mean the hard drive Mark let us alone with when he left the room?” Jake holds up a black, square object. “This one?” “You switched it out?” Jake grins. “Of course. Now we just have to check if he told the truth for once and really put the evidence we need on here. Or if this is just another trap.”

DUSKWOOD THE HEIST - CHAPTER 29
English is not my first language, so please spare me for grammar mistakes. 🙏
I'm not very confidant about this chapter tbh. My head kinda keeps being numb & empty 😣
The Heist Master list
Previous chapter
Chapter 29
"We could get the flight list with your name on it and showing you board it and then sneak you off,"
But it's trickier than it seems to pretend to be dead. It’s almost impossible; especially in this era. Simply sneaking Mark out of the plane would not satisfy anyone’s doubts. Simply blowing off his private plane won’t get anything done. I gulp, unable to let out the seemingly possible next option.
Breaking the heavy silence, something completely unexpected escapes from MC’s lips. Never in a million years did I imagine, my little genius could utter such words.
“I guess we have no choice but to use a dummy instead of you, no matter how I imagine,” MC says, thoughtfully tapping her chin with her index finger.
Did I get that right? Did she mean we should kill someone else in Mark’s place?
I feel like I’m slowly turning her into a monster…a monster akin to me.
Mark draws a devilish smirk at her words. Aha! You’ve got a nice catch there, Jake! His face seems to say.
If only I could wipe away the existence of this guy…
In another minute, MC puts her hand on my thigh, “By the way, wouldn’t they be suspicious if we stay here for too long?” Then she turns to Mark, then shrugging her arms, “Surely they’d think we got caught or switched sides.”
Right. The most important thing right now is to get out of this place first.
Whether we’re working with you or the FBI…let’s see after that, you bastard.
Soon, Mark nodded along. “That’s true indeed. I see that you need to sneak out of here first.” He stood up, “Still, we need to discuss our next steps before you do.”
“Right.”
***
Jake and Mark continued the discussion (Somehow that bastard, Mark didn’t want me joining in. Is that gender discrimination?) while I… I kept contemplating whether I should tell the truth. Still, I can’t imagine how Jake would react to it.
Then we were both sneaked into a lorry full of…well, onions. Is this that bastard’s way of bullying us? It stinks! Where the hell did these freaking onions come from even?!
And now, here we are. On a country road, a dense forest on either side. (We were dumped here) For god’s sake, it will take months to find our bodies even if that Mark bastard shoots us and shove our bodies into the woods.
Is it my imagination? Jake seems a little…no okay, VERY angry. He already contacted Kyle and we are waiting for him, while we smell like… onions. We are sitting by the road, in silence.
I think now is the time.
“Um…Jake?” He turns to face me, and I gulp. Should I just say it’s nothing?
“Actually…there’s something I didn’t tell you…before going to the farm…” The latter of the words blurring, I avoid his gaze sneakily.
Jake frowns a little, “What is it MC?”
I clench my fists, “The thing is…your relationship to Mark..” Upon hearing those words, his face visibly contorted. I close my eyes tight, “I already knew about that.”
“What?”
I open my eyes slowly, to see Jake, whose face is full of confusion.
“You know…that day when we argued about me going to the farm and all? That night, while you were working on something I got Kyle to talk.”
Jake clenches his jaw, deeply sighing. I’m so sorry, Kyle! I didn’t mean to betray you either.
“Well, at first I just needed some assurance. I get it that you trust him and all, but…Kyle said his mother was killed and his sister was in a coma. I couldn’t leave out the possibility of Kyle being blackmailed using his sister. Because, if I was Mark, I’d definitely consider that option to corner you.”
He chuckles, taking my left hand into his. “I should’ve seen that coming.”
I nod, “So what happened was…”
-FLASHBACK-
“ I apologize if you’re offended but I need to know.”
“What is it?” Kyle looks up from the laptop screen, raising his brows.
“Before that, can we talk right now? I mean, it’s okay if you’re busy. We can talk later…possibly.” I fidget a little, honestly, I’m not sure if we’d get another chance before going to the farm. Jake is slumped with work, and won’t care to look for me right now.
This is the perfect chance.
Kyle shakes his head, “No. Now’s a good time.”
I nod, then proceed to sit on the chair in front of him. “I can’t be hundred percent sure, but I felt like you had something to tell me.” He widens his green eyes, then avoids mine.
“Is it…concerning your sister maybe?”
He looks up again, sighing. “Before that, let me ask you a question. What is our relationship to Master according to Jake?”
I raise an eyebrow, a little confused but answer anyway. “That you two are college friends and Master was your immediate supervisor at your first job?”
“Pfft. Seriously? Then how did we get involved in this mess?”
I feel it, I am getting annoyed. Still, I won’t get another chance for this. “That bastard was a vigilante or something and Jake was tricked into helping his illegal stuff. You refused but you suddenly warned him of the bastard then disappeared.” Forgive me for continuously calling someone’s child, a bastard. Sorry but not sorry, I simply have no heart to call that bastard ‘Master’. “Then he was framed by the bastard.”
He smirks, leaning over the chair. “Honestly tell me, you don’t buy that, right?” To which I just shrugged. Yeah. I don’t buy it. Why? Because Jake isn’t stupid enough not to see the consequences of his actions. For god, he wasn’t a f*cking six-year-old!
“Your hunch is somewhat right, I’d say. My sister was captured by Master. But, I’m not being blackmailed…At least for now. I guess he is assuming I’d lay low.”
I cross my arms across my chest, leaning over the backrest. “Then that means, by helping us, you’re putting her life in danger. Why are you doing this instead of licking his boots?”
Kyle sighed, deeply before closing his eyes for a moment. Then opening his eyes, he leaned forward. “You saw it coming too, right? Master always sees a few steps ahead. The truth is, tomorrow is a trap. A trap set for you and Jake.”
I bite my lower lip, I can taste the metallic taste of blood. “But there’s one thing we can be sure of. My involvement in this is something Master won’t see beforehand.”
“Let me guess, is your sister perhaps kept on the farm?”
He nodded, grinning. “Yes. The real goal for tomorrow is, you two saving your ass from his grasp while I, I’ll save my sister.”
“We are to buy time for you so you can save your sister...” While he nods, I frown. “And for what reason do we have to risk our lives for your sister?” Kyle sucked a sharp breath, “I swear miss Davis, If you help me with that, I’ll do anything. ANYTHING. Master won’t kill you two. No. If he wanted to, you’d be dead already. I suppose he has another motive.”
My heart races, “That means, we have no exit in this game other than going to the farm tomorrow. Because everything is a play, and that bastard is the screenwriter.”
“Yes. That’s why we have to take him by surprise with a plot twist.”
Ha ha ha! I see that weird twelve-headed creature has finally gone crazy! F*ck you!
“But why aren’t you telling this to Jake instead of me?”
He shrugs with a smug face, “He has gone crazy, that’s why.”
I scoff before staring into his eyes directly, “Then tell me this, then I’ll consider what to do next. What are you two’s REAL relationship to that bastard?”
-To be Continued.

I am really looking forward to this and my ideas already started flowing :D
For All Of Time
A collaboration of Jake X MC
The neon lights flickered above their heads. A counter was lined with paper cups and some flowers littered the sterile room. A cot was carefully placed next to the bed but never used. Buzzers and alarms filled his ears. Nurses moving through the hallway attempted to cover the silence with their upbeat chatter, but the words did not reach him.
They had been here for weeks. He had been injured, but his recovery was short and he insisted on being in her room. He hadn't left despite Hannah and Lily trying to convince him otherwise. The others visited, but he barely acknowledged their presence. He would not leave until she woke up. He couldn't leave because she was his heart and he couldn't live without her.
That car had come out of nowhere, slipping on the country roads in the middle of a rainy night. In an effort to save her, he had swerved into a ditch. He woke as the lights of the ambulance came into view. She did not. She has still not opened those beautiful green eyes and he misses the love that shone through them. When he slept beside her, climbing in bed when the nurses would allow it, this was the nightmare that woke him up. A never-ending spiral of the moment that she faded away. He kept reliving that night, the last time he heard her laugh, the last time he felt alive himself.
As she lay silent, he didn't know if she could hear him. Though he didn't know if he believed in God or in prayer, he prayed that she could. He prayed that she felt his love. He prayed that she would wake up.
They had met in life after many years of loss. They weren't exactly broken, but together they felt whole. They weren't exactly dependent, but they didn't want to be apart. They weren't exactly old, but they had experienced life and most of its struggles. Their love had been one that seemed fated, one that had been building for a lifetime. He didn't believe they could have avoided falling in love with each other even if they wanted to. That is the thing that Jake held on to. Surely God, the fates, or whatever power made the Earth spin and the stars twinkle knew that he wasn't without her. He simply wasn't.
So, as he sits by her bed, holding her hand with one of his, drinking cold coffee from a cardboard cup, he talks to her. He whispers his love. He reminds her of the times they have shared and all of the times that he wants to share, all of the times that the universe owed him.
He waits for his life to open her eyes and for the air to return to his lungs.
She hears him, every word, every sweet nothing, every memory, every dream. She knows he is there, the other half of herself, but she can't reach him. She can't get back to him yet, but she will. In between his words, she sleeps, she rests, and she gets stronger so that she can feel his warmth, feel his arms around her, and once again, see the light in his eyes.
He is telling her a story from his childhood, one of the few that he has of his mom. His voice is soothing, and though she could listen to him talk forever, she falls asleep. It is there that she begins to dream ...

I am in (after my vacation)
Collaboration idea.
Ok, I have this idea where MC gets into a car accident and goes into a coma. During that time, she dreams (remembers) all of the times that she and Jake have fallen in love in past lifetimes.
I was wondering if any of you fabulous writers would like to get together and write one of their past life stories.
I think we could post and complete them into a lovely story about love that is not hindered by death or time.
I could do an introduction chapter and then we could all take one shot of a past life (or more if you would like.)
Would anyone be interested in this?

Oh, haha. I am really happy you liked it @julesisreading ☺️
I don't think that there is anything in my water. Maybe in the grown-up-juice...
But I am always happy to receive a prompt to get my creativity going!
Fate in a Buried Tub
It feels like walking through a portal into another world when Jake rounds a corner leading from the brightly lit and bustling Chinatown quarter into a narrow and gloomy side alley. There are no shops here and only a few lost souls hurry along the narrow sidewalk.
Jake takes out his phone to check the route description MC sent him, then he looks around. That could be it: An old garage door. When he walks up to it he can see a huge, old clock face through the glass. It must have been taken from an old train station.
Jake: I’m here.
MC: Just my luck. Tram service stopped working all of a sudden. I had to walk the last two stations.
MC: You can head inside already. I made a reservation under the name Smith.
MC: I’ll be with you in just a few minutes. 😄
Jake looks around once more. Noone seems to be paying any attention to him. So he turns to a small side door next to the garage gate and rings the doorbell. It takes a moment before the door opens a crack and a man in a suit and tophat appears. “Yes?” he asks, wearing a wary expression on his face. Jake takes a deep breath, and then, feeling silly, he says: “Lovely trails.”
The bouncer’s attitude changes immediately and he opens the door as wide as his smile. “Welcome to the Buried Tub. Do you have a reservation?” “For Smith.” “Well, come on in then.” Jake is led through the garage room. The massive clock turns out to be concealing a pathway into the interior of the house.
A narrow hallway later Jake enters a surprisingly large bar room. The bar is to the immediate right of him. Opposite of it is a small stage where a few people are currently setting up instruments. Further in, there are six bistro tables with two chairs each. A sort of lounge with a few cozy leather sofas is separated from the main room by a pool table. The entire room is dimly lit. Every bit of wall space is occupied by old photos, newspaper clippings and advertisements from the prohibition era.
They walk past the pool table. Then, the bouncer indicates a single couch with a small coffee table in front of it. Jake takes a seat and is handed a menu. “I take it, you expect company? Once they arrive I will start you off with our signature Sidecar.” “Thank you.”
Jake puts the menu on the table in front of him and settles back into the couch. When MC suggested this place for their first meeting, he had looked into it. Despite, or maybe because of its secrecy, this bar is very popular. It is regularly booked solid and apparently you would need to offer your first born as a sacrifice to secure a spot on the more comfortable and intimate couches. Still, right now there are only four other patrons: Two couples occupying two of the bistro tables in the front.
He takes out his phone and starts fidgeting with it. They have been waiting for this first meeting for so long. And now that he is here, knowing that she will walk in any minute now, he can’t help it but wonder what her reaction will be when she sees him for the first time. Ever since she came into his life he was not able to show her his face. He still fears his pursuers catching up on him. But he has also made a promise to her.
But he has also spent many hours thinking about her and wondering what she looks like. To his own surprise, he always felt hesitant to look her up on social media or through other channels available to him. This is normally not in his nature anymore, especially when his own safety is at stake. But the thought of violating her privacy and her trust like that always felt wrong.
Jake frowns down on his phone. Right now, however, the temptation to sneak a peek is stronger than ever.
Just when he looks up again the entry opens again and the bouncer walks through, followed by a woman. They stop at the bar and speak briefly, before he turns back and she continues her path right towards him. Jake gets up to greet MC, but as she gets closer, his smile freezes. He has no doubt. Her long ponytail has changed to a shorter hair style. But apart from that she has barely changed.
The look of surprise on his face is mirrored on her features. “It is..you?” “What the hell?” they say in unison.
*******
It was a Saturday evening and people were flocking to one of the last house parties of the semester. Climbing the stairs to the second floor it dawned on Jake that the apartment was packed with people already.
“Ugh. I can’t believe I let you drag me here. I should be working on my final project.” “Oh come on, “ Rob retorted. “We still have two weeks to hand it in. And, unlike me, you don’t even need the credit anymore. I still can’t believe you talked our Prof into granting you extra credit for your side hustle.” Rob was not wrong. Jake had been working at a Cyber Security firm all year parallel to his studies. With his boss and their professor being old friends he could even use one of his recent assignments as his final project.
“But did it have to be a motto party?” Jake asked. “Crooks and Hoodlums!” Rob beamed, waving his plastic Tommy Gun that shot soap bubbles. Everyone around them was dressed up. There were some Blues Brothers, several characters that look like they climbed out of a second grade mafia movie, a few pimps, and so on.
As soon as they made it through the door, they were greeted by Pete, one of the hosts. "Hey guys, good to see you! Help yourself to some beer. We are keeping it cool in the tub." He gestured toward a door. From the looks of it, the bathroom was the most popular room of this party. "There is also some food in the kitchen." Rob patted Pete’s shoulder. "Did you invite the entire University?" "Almost," Pete laughed. "There are plenty of people from the Physics and Math department, the weirdos from History and Languages and I think the entire geosciences department showed up. As usual when there is free beer involved."
Pete was called away and Jake and Rob proceeded to the infamous tub, where they ran into a few more familiar faces. A conversation, however, was barely possible over the blasting music. The group drifted back into the hallway and Jake ended up leaning against one of the bedroom doors observing the others playing Singstar on Pete's Playstation. None of the participants would be competing in The Voice anytime soon.
After a while, Jake noticed that the wall next to him, between this and the other bedroom door, was plastered with photos. He moved on to study the images capturing other house parties, dinners in the garden downstairs and various other outings. It looked like this collection spanned many years and must have been inherited and continued by new roommates moving in.
Suddenly, a girl, noticeably also not dressed up for the motto, came storming out of the second bedroom, tailed by a handful of clearly intoxicated friends. “I won’t stand here letting you call me a bore, just because I did not feel like dressing up as Patty Hearst or whatever.” “Well, this is my party, Maya,”  one of the girls said, slurring her words. “And I say that the punishment for showing up in civilian clothes is that you have to show your wild side right now.”  The flock behind her giggled. “I’ll show you alright.” Maya swirled around, almost colliding with Jake. For a second, they looked at each other in equal surprise. Then he noticed a devious twinkle lighting up in her eyes. And before he understood what was happening, she put her hands to his face, bringing him even closer to her, and pressed her lips to his. Her scent of lilac, citrus and honey was intoxicating and for a moment the blasting music and all the people around them faded to nothing. Jake could not help himself but kiss her back, while the girls behind her gasped in unison. He could feel her lips twist into a smile, followed by a slight nibble on his lower lip. As their kiss deepened even further, she raised herself up to her toes, closing even more distance between them.
They were both gasping for air, when they finally parted. Jake’s heart was racing. Maya was flushed as well. Her now rose colored cheeks made her look even more adorable. “Hi” she said with a smile that caused his heart rate to skyrocket even further. “H-hi…,” Jake stuttered. Before he could add anything more eloquent, she was dragged away by her friends, raising her free hand palm up and shrugging in an apologetic gesture.
“What was that?” Rob was standing in the door, carrying several empty beer bottles. “I have no clue.” Raising his own bottle, he asked “Let’s get some more?”
During the remainder of the evening, Jake was not able to get this kiss out of his head. He was on the constant look out but could not spot her anywhere. He almost started to believe that he imagined it all, if it were not for the constant mocking of his friends.
It was already well beyond midnight when the kitchen table was converted to a beer-pong set up and Jake decided that he had enough. Ignoring the protests of Rob, who had counted on Jake joining his team, he headed out of the apartment and down the stairs. “You are leaving already?” he heard a voice behind him. Jake turned around and there she was, standing at the top of the stairs, leaning over the banister and looking down on him with a smile. “Oh, you are real after all.” She let out a melodious laugh. “Last time I checked, yes.”
Straightening up, Maya walked down a few steps towards Jake. Her stopping one step above him brought them up to the same height. “I am sorry about that earlier.” Her smile indicated that she was not sorry at all. “I am Maya, by the way.” “Hello, Maya. I am Jake. What was that all about?” “Uhm,” she hesitated. “I don’t know what came over me there. Jenny got on my nerves, I guess. But I have to say, that was a nice kiss.” “It sure was.”
For a moment they stood there, on the stairs, looking at each other in silence. They both seemed to now know how to go on from here. Maya broke the silence. “You have really pretty eyes, you know?” Jake felt heat creeping up to his face. “Thanks?” This triggered another melodious laugh. “I’d like to talk some more. But I have promised to stay and help clean up,” she said with a sigh. “How about dinner tomorrow? Well, today actually. I live close by. We could meet here around seven?” “I’d like that.” “Great. See you tomorrow then.” She gave him a last, bright smile and hurried back up the stairs. Jake stayed for a moment, watching her disappear through a door next to the apartment's main entrance, before finally continuing his descent.
By the time he arrived back at his dorm he still felt too wired to go to sleep. These whirlwind encounters with Maya still kept him in a daze. His thoughts were racing, mainly towards seeing her again the next day.
Not being able to find any rest any time soon, he decided to continue working at his assignment instead. This would, however, trigger a sequence of unfortunate events.
And, as a result, Jake would never make it to that date.
*******
“I thought I’d never see you again. At first I was really pissed when you stood me up. But a few days later I ran into your roommate. And he was completely freaked out, saying that you just up and left.”
They have settled onto the couch. MC with her feet tucked under her, cocktail in hand and turned to face Jake, while he sat forward, his elbows resting on his knees. The musicians on the stage at the front of the bar have started to play some smooth Jazz. There are more people now, occupying the tables and sofas.
MC had mentioned earlier that she chose this Speakeasy for their first meeting, because photography was banned here. So there was no chance that Jake would accidentally show up in the background of someone's latest Instagram post.
“Remember when I said that I lost everything in one night? All that happened right after I went home from that party. My final assignment before graduating was related to checking and improving on the IT security of a government branch. I could not sleep that night. So I decided to carry out a penetration test that was still pending.”
Jake feels the familiar knot forming in his stomach when thinking back to that night. “While doing  so I stumbled upon some incriminating data linked to a network account of an official high up in the ranks. By the time I finally reached the owner of the Cyber Security firm I was doing the assignment for, he had already been pressured to give up my personal details. He warned me that they were coming for me and that there was nothing he could … or would do for me.”
MC slams her glass onto the coffee table. “This is unbelievable!” Startled from her outburst, Jake turns to face her. Her face looked like she was about to shoot lightning bolts from her eyes.
“I did not mean to blow you off like this. I thought about finding you after I found a place to hide. But what good would have come from dragging you into my mess?”
MC expression softens and she scoots over to close the distance between them. Taking his hand into hers, she leans against his chest. Her scent is just as intoxicating as it was back then.
“And you never realized that it was me all along, after Thomas contacted me?” Jake shakes his head. “I never looked into you. I can’t fully explain why. But this way I knew only about you what you chose to tell me. And since you did not tell me that your full name was Maya… What does the C stand for anyways?” “Christine. My middle name.”
MC breathes a small laugh. “I admit, when you first told me your name I did think about the guy I randomly kissed at a party. But the possibility that this could actually be you somehow never crossed my mind.”
She looks up at Jake. Their faces are only inches apart now. “If this is not fate, then I don’t know what is. But it explains the instant connection I felt when we first started texting.” “You are right,” Jake says with a soft smile. He brings his free hand to her face, gently stroking her cheek with his thumb.
They are ripped out of their thoughts, when a waitress approaches them, seemingly out of nowhere. “Is everything okay here? Would you like another drink?” Jake regards her with a frown, while MC whispers: “Shall we get out of here?”
Once the tab is settled, they leave the Speakeasy. Outside, MC takes Jake's hand into hers and leans against him again. It is as if she could not bear any distance between them anymore. In the dim light of the distant streetlamps, he can barely make out her features. But he is certain that he recognizes that devious twinkle in her beautiful eyes again.
“So, what now?” he asks. “Well,” she responds. “Whatever happens, don’t even think for a second that I’m going to let you off the hook again, this time.”

Thank you so much for your kind words :) this kind of feedback (even if it were constructive criticism) means a lot to me!
Hey there! 💙
Here is a prompt idea for Jake x MC, if you don't mind: it’s their first meeting, they have never seen each other (because Jake has never shown his face, nor has he ever tried to find out what MC looks like...)
what they don’t know: they actually met a long time ago and really liked each other, but then suddenly Jake just disappeared and MC never found out what happened to this mysterious guy she fell in love with at the time.
So when they finally meet, they're... well... let's say they're slightly surprised ;)
Hey!
I know it took me a while but I just posted a oneshot based on your amazing prompt!
When a bit of a plot twist or similar is included I prefer to not post it as direct reply to an ask, to not ruin the surprises ;)
I hope you like the result :3
