always knows the correct answer but won’t raise her hand. scribbled notes down milky toned arms. heartbeat like the whomping willow. red splintered fingertips. clutching books until the pages fall out. genius wrapped in hand me downs. doesn’t know she’s beautiful. wide-eyed and hard as a rock. doesn’t back down from a challenge. they always leave so leave first.

WIZARD THINGS.
blood status: half-blood. house: ravenclaw. animagus? none. wand:
length: 10 ½ flexibility: slightly flexible
wood: larch;; strong, durable and warm in colour, larch has long been valued as an attractive and powerful wand wood. its reputation for instilling courage and confidence in the user has ensured that demand has always outstripped supply. this much sought-after wand is, however, hard to please in the matter of ideal owners, and trickier to handle than many imagine. it always creates wands of hidden talents and unexpected effects, which likewise describes the master who deserves it. it is often the case that the witch or wizard who belongs to the larch wand may never realize the full extent of their considerable talents until paired with it, but that they will then make an exceptional match.
core: dragon heartstring;; as a rule, dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. while they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner. the dragon wand tends to be easiest to turn to the dark arts, though it will not incline that way of its own accord. it is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.
BIO.
trigger warning: child neglect, drug use.
though part of the sacred 28, the name ollivander was known for its wands and scruffy men covered in dust. the family was respected because of the skill it had produced but that was it. they weren’t seen in social circles or donning top of the line garments. no one paid them much attention unless hogwarts was back in session. but the family did suffer scandal, it was only a matter of the details becoming public that brought about panic within the family. georgette marie was the product of the scandal.
glen ollivander didn’t care what anyone thought. he did what he wanted, who he wanted and got himself into trouble however he wanted. he had no respect for himself, let alone the family name. other pureblood families were literally getting away with murder, so what if he snorted coke to start the day? one particularly dark, misty night, glen went to the muggle club he frequented and was awestruck by a muggle woman, shirley. he began spending his days and nights with her, each egging the other on. those hazy late nights being spent together led to shirley getting pregnant which was not part of the plan. shirley thought it might be a sign to slow down. she gave birth to georgette but it didn’t take long for the couple to go back to their old ways, often leaving little georgette alone.
the ollivander family tried to figure out what to do about glen and shirley but every time there was an intervention, a simple conversation or even mention of the their parenting abilities of such a young child, voices erupted. what was georgette to become living in that home? the ollivander family didn’t want another problem child on their hands. at the mere suggestion of georgette staying with family until they got clean, glen and shirley dropped three year old georgette at garrick’s wand shop which she would learn to call home, forever forgotten by her parents.
but she had her uncle garrick. he took her in and raised her. if nothing else he took the chance to teach her about wand-making. from a young age she carried a journal full of notes about all different types of wood, cores, flexibilities and temperaments. she was even taken in by the history of the profession and wandmakers in other countries. georgette dove in head first and fell in love with the education he gave her. wand-making was the one thing that made her feel special.
after being sorted into ravenclaw, georgette quietly went to the table, embarrassed that anyone would cheer for her. she was a wallflower and soon felt like a ghost in the ravenclaw common room. sitting in corners with books was how she’d lived her life up until then. she wasn’t fond of talking and didn’t have the best social skills. she was awkward but when a topic came up that she was passionate about she was able to speak with no trouble. she spoke about what she knew but what she knew came from her time alone. reading, practicing for classes and scribbling pictures of wands in the parchment margins. ink drawings and notes cascaded on her arms when parchment wasn’t enough.
her friend circle was sparse. georgette didn’t attach herself to anyone because she assumed they would leave and she didn’t need anymore of that heartache. the thought terrified her. she was even nervous that her uncle would kick her out of the store’s loft, never wanting to see or hear from her again. it’s fair to say that hogwarts was tough for georgette, but also what she expected: to not be seen.
hogwarts wasn’t her home, ollivander’s was her sanctuary. during the summer before georgette’s sixth year at hogwarts, she made her own wand. the qualities of her wand were: larch wood, dragon heartstring, 10 ½ inches and only slightly flexible. when her uncle found out, he was extremely upset at first but when he saw its beauty and her showing off the wand in action he watched in awe of what she had done. he couldn’t help but be impressed; his barely sixteen year old niece wasn’t only the first female ollivander to express interest in wand making, but she was more talented than many men he’d seen. and half-blood at that. she was a natural which both impressed and scared him.
georgette fought not to return to hogwarts and to begin making wands right away. but she was told no. a large, emphatic no. garrick forbade her to make anything for anyone else. he even contemplated taking the wand she made for herself but couldn’t bring himself to do so when she clutched it to her chest and begged to keep it. even as she’d grown it’s the only wand she owned that ever really mattered to her.
when she finally graduated from hogwarts, she hoped with all hope that she would not be introduced only as an apprentice or niece but truly part of the business. to her disappointment, she heard the word “apprentice” when people asked garrick what she did at the shop. georgette started to feel like she was an embarrassment to him too.
she wanted to make wands. using her hands, getting them dirty, getting splinters – it’s what made georgette georgette and she wouldn’t have anyone take that away from her. not even her uncle. in retaliation georgette would wait for him to leave the store at night and sneak down the steps to the backroom to fiddle with the familiar pieces of earth that made magic happen. georgette tried not to pay much attention to the news around town – she loathed the daily prophet. to her, the war was a war. they happened. so what if she picked a side? she would never make a difference to one side or the other so instead she made wands. wands that may one day cause harm – or peace.
