~ The doctor just shook his head and left it at that, leaving the boy to cry himself to sleep. He knew that many soldiers did that and he couldn't be there for everyone. So he shrugged and went to his own tent, sharing it with other doctors. The next morning, he was awake before the call of the drums and watched his clock, counting the minutes it took the boy to get up and appear ready at the field hospital. ~
// August 1777 //
~ Craik grinned from ear to ear as he stepped back into the tent. "I won. He's still throwing up." A collective groan was heard from the doctors on duty, picking their pockets to give their colleague his money or other wares that were bet. Only then he nodded at the nearby guards. "You can take our prisoner away and throw him out of camp and tell Washington the deed is done." He filled a cup with water and headed back out, handing it to the dry heaving Lafayette. "Welcome to camp!" ~
LaFayette nearly couldn't stomach the procedure done before his eyes but manages to not throw up despite the dry heaves. " Mon dieu.. " he said under his breath, feeling queasy but fought it off. " Nice way to torture prisoners.. ~~

~ "A soldier?! You are a pitiful excuse for a fucked up orphan with a father complex!", rorared Tench before being manhandled by his colleagues. "Just ignore him. He will calm down by the morning and be sorry about it." Craik tightened his grip around Lafayette's collar to guide him through the rows of tents. "Get some sleep, boy. You will need it. When you hear the drums, you get dressed and show up at our tent as soon as possible, do you understand?" ~

~ Tench sighed. "You have your chance as the doctor's helper." Craik looked at the aide and nodded at the colleagues of the man. "Get him to bed. And I will take care of this one." Without another word, he got up and gently pulled at Lafayette's collar to get him going. "We're all tired." ~

~ Tench just shook his head. "And you want to show everyone here that letter? So they will be your friends? That's not how life works, sorry." Craik shrugged and held his hands loser to the fire to warm them up. "That's why I brought him here. A few friends in the right places don't hurt, right?" ~

~ "Look, we are grateful for help. But a single man? Look around. We are enough men. But we lack ammunition, weapons, blankets and such. We all are frustrated that some of your people come here and want a high command and do nothing for it. Like you. Don't take it personal, but why should you be made a general? You have no experience, no achievements, not even a bigger battle you've been in. You are a kid that's naive and wants to have fame to brag at home." Tench's voice was calm as he tried to explain the dilemma of most soldiers around them. The men around them nodded, Craik included. ~

~ "Ohh, how noble of you, your Majesty. Thank you for being here with your valuable expertise and hard work!" The man who had spoken got up and left the circle around the fire after spitting in front of Lafayette's feet. Tench rolled his eyes. "Don't listen to him, kid. He's drunk and bitter." Craik smirked. "His wife ran off to France and there are rumors she really like the french ways of..." he made a describing motion as to what the lady likes the most. ~

~ Another round of laughter from the men. "A nobleman?!" "Golly, you will make your lace handkerchief dirty!" After the lighthearted teasing they calmed down and some even shook their heads. "Let me guess, came here with a commission from Congress, making you a stupid general or something?" Tench seemed tired of the same old story, rubbing his face in a frustrated manner. Craik nodded and looked at Lafayette. "And that's the reason most here don't like the French." ~

~ The men broke out in laughter at Lafyette's face. "Come on, Craik, he's just a boy. Why did Washington put him into your team?" The doctor shrugged. "So he wouldn't shy away if he ever gets a command, I guess." "Wouldn't it be better to have im on the battlefield as a soldier then?" Tench shook his head, as always knowing what his commander wanted to achieve. "He's not used to fight, I think. Right, Gilbert?" ~

~ "The best job in camp! And shut up, Tench. Just because you fainted on the spot." Turned to Hamilton, Craik added: "He's been a great help so far. But you know, long days of hard work. He will get used to it." The one called Tench held out a flask to Lafayette. "Here, this will help you sleep without nightmares." His eyes were full of concern as he looked at the young man. ~

~ "Come on, boy, you can be nicer. You are to the ladies." Craik grinned at the young aide while wolfing down his meal halfway before exchanging his half-full plate with Lafayette's emtpy one. "Extra for the hard work today." "Heard you found the bastard that... you know.", asked another one in a low voice. "Yeah, they did. I did a pretty good treatment on him.", the doctor laughed at the mostly unknowing glances. Only one man groaned lowly. "You, good sir, are a very disturbed mind." ~

You listened to the first song of the musical right? "Alexander Hamilton". Did you learn anything in that song that you previously didn't know about Alex or was none of them news to you?
Hmm, I think I knew it all? But the funny part of it is that I sometimes really struggle to imagine him in his family in their country of origin. Like a scottish Alexander? That would be so weird for some reason.
But he told me a lot of things about himself he may have not told everyone and I am grateful for that. Other facts were widely known about him, even back then.

~ "This is Gilbert, he's our new assistant." Craik looked around. "Anyone got something to say?" He already had a wicked grin on his face, as if he was actually hoping for someone to say something. And he seemed disappointed as no one spoke up, giving him the fight he had been looking for. "Well, get used to him anyway.", he added, clearly calmer now. ~

*raises a brow* You would really like that? *smiles and hugs her tightly* I can have the paperwprk done this evening, my dear daughter!! Oh really? But then you will also have to deal with the unpleasant things of such relationships. Like death. Do you think you can handle that? *just worries about her mental health*
*comes to his office with Cookie in her arms, of course knocking on the door first* Uncle, may I come in and talk to you? I keep thinking about our last conversation with Auntie Martha... *sits next to him on the chair* You said that a doctor must take an oath not to kill or hurt anyone... What if, for example, you or Auntie were in danger, and the only what I could do to save you is shoot?
Hmm? *puts away the pen and papers to make some space for her on a chair* What is it, my dear? *listens while giving Cookie a bit of bread* Hmmm, that is a good question. Of course I had doctors with me that also were soldiers. They killed. But some just were working as doctors, refering to the oath. You know, back in my time, duels were common. The docotr would always turn his back to the opponents as not to see what they were doing. So he could help but say he kept the oath. I think it's more about the chance to kill or hurt someone, not in self-defense. Wasn't Doctor Schneider a soldier? Maybe ask him how he would see it.

"Craik, you are a horrible person! what did you give the general that caused him to vomit?"
~ The doctor raised a brow. "The General is Cochran's responsibility, not mine." He seems to think. "Although we shared a bottle of Madeira yesterday in the evening if I remember correctly." A fond smile was seen on his face. "After that it got a bit blurry as I was then having a good time with some of his aides." ~

What is the relationship with you and General Lafayette like?
He's like a son to me. And like all relationships between father and son, there are good and bad moments. But I would gladly give my life for him.

~ "Yeah, and stop that. You are in America, speak english. Some of the lads don't like the French. You know, the last war. Not too fond of the guys." He guided Lafayette to a calm place to sit around a fire. "We don't have plates or canteens like the normal soldiers. You can get almost everything from here." ~

~ "Precious little bugger. Listens only to people he likes. Will try to kill others." Craik shook his head. "You will see. But now come, let's try to find some food." He walked along the rows of tents of the now standing camp. "North, south... the main road is east to west." He patiently pointed out all points of orientation before stopping at a smaller tent. "Our kitchen. The doctors sometimes get extra food, so I would recommend you to come with one of us." The doctor smiled at a female cook and greeted her friendly while getting a plate for himself and Lafayette. ~
