Group Critique Feedback
My feedback during the group critique was slightly disheartening. I was told that I had misinterpreted the brief and to consider other options of skin celebration. Due to this feedback, it has led me to reach a bit of a standstill in terms of inspiration and motivation. I was advised to research skin campaigns that promote positivity like Dove. This will be my next step in development. I need to read through the brief again and understand it better. I still want to utilise sun cream branding as part of my brief interpretation but focus more on pinpointing a problem and also use campaigns alongside the brand.

Risks and benefits of sunlight
"One study looked at measuring the risks and benefits of exposure to sunlight. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause damage to the skin cells and lead to skin cancer. But we need some sunlight for our bodies to make vitamin D.
The research team found that even very low levels of ultraviolet radiation can increase vitamin D production and cause DNA damage, in all skin types. The level is well below the usual level that would cause sunburn. For light skin they found that DNA damage can happen in the upper and lower skin layers. But for dark skin it was only in the upper layers. This helps to explain the higher risk of skin cancer for people with light skin."
"Most skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun. This may be long term exposure, or short periods of intense sun exposure and burning. The ultraviolet light in sunlight damages the DNA in the skin cells. This damage can happen years before a cancer develops."

Lush offers one sun cream that consists of a lot of natural ingredients but is £18 per 50g of product. Despite their self-preserving skin care, this is not self-preserved and contains methoxydibenzoylmethane.
Aside from this, amongst the ingredients I am able to see a lot of elements that came up in my research on what is good for different types of skin.

Oxybenzone/Octinoxate
"When at effective levels, certain chemical UV filters, namely oxybenzone and octinoxate, have been found to negatively impact coral reefs and contribute to coral bleaching," says Dr. Libby. "Reef-safe sunscreens are those with mineral blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are considered safer for coral reefs," she continues. Also, she points out that some sunscreens will include "reef-safe" to help guide consumers who are particularly interested in this topic.
Dr. Libby adds that oxybenzone, also known as benzophenone-3, was awarded the allergen of the year in 2014 and is the most common sunscreen ingredient known to cause photoallergic contact dermatitis."

Methylisothiazolinone "Methylisothiazolinone is an ingredient seen in countless skincare products, due to its efficacy as a preservative. While it preserves the shelf-life of some products, it's not great for sensitive skin. "This ingredient can cause allergic reactions for some people, particularly those with sensitive skin," Dr. Geria says."

What Is Oily Skin? "Oily skin produces an excess of sebum that causes the skin to appear shiny and feel greasy—especially throughout the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). People with oily skin may tend to have less wrinkles, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD),2 but they may also be more prone to enlarged pores, acne blemishes, blackheads, and whiteheads."
What Is Dry Skin? "Dry skin generally produces less natural oils than other types of skin. This may cause it to appear dull and become rough, flaky, or even scaly. It often feels tight or less elastic, noticeably dehydrated, and may be prone to showing more visible fine lines. In addition, it may become itchy or irritated."
What Is Normal Skin? "Normal skin is balanced—feeling neither too dry nor too oily. It is not prone to breakouts, flakiness, or feeling greasy or tight. People with normal skin typically have pores that are small, a smooth skin texture, and are less prone to sensitivity or blemishes. However, despite the fact that normal skin doesn’t have any specific issues or concerns, it still requires proper skincare to look and feel its best. The ideal normal skin routine helps maintain your skin’s hydration by locking in moisture and supporting your skin’s protective barrier."
What Is Combination Skin? "Combination skin includes areas that are dry as well as oily—with the T-zone commonly being oily, and the cheeks being either dry or normal. This skin type can vary during different seasons of the year, and due to various factors, such as stress or hormone fluctuation. Effective cleansing and hydration are key to care for skin that's oily or normal in some places and dry in others."
What Is Sensitive Skin? "Sensitive skin is often referred to as a skin type, but it’s possible to have oily sensitive skin, dry sensitive skin, or normal sensitive skin. Regardless of which type of skin you have, if you have sensitive skin, it may appear red and feel like it's burning, itching, or dry. These symptoms may be related to having skin that is more vulnerable to external irritants and may be triggered by certain ingredients—like dyes or fragrance—as well as environmental factors."

Best Ingredients For Normal Skin
Soy "Topical soy has been shown to lighten discolouration due to melasma and sun damage by inhibiting skin's overproduction of melanin skin pigment."
Vitamin C "You may think of vitamin C as an essential defense against the common cold, but the nutrient also battles the common signs of aging skin: sagging and dullness. Vitamin C aids in collagen synthesis, which is essential for firmness and smoothness, Wu explains. Plus, it has antioxidant benefits to help fight free-radical damage, and lightens dark spots. As if this little vitamin didn't already work hard enough, C can also regulate sebum production to prevent acne and decrease inflammation."
Green Tea Extract "This healthy drink contains high levels of antioxidant chemicals — including catechins, such as epigallocatechin gallate, and flavonoids, such as kaempferol and theaflavin — to help prevent and reverse UV damage to the skin, explains Neal Schultz, MD, a dermatologist in New York City and creator of BeautyRx Skincare. These same chemicals make green tea an excellent natural anti-inflammatory and skin soothing ingredient in skin care."

Best Ingredients For Eczema Prone Skin
Coconut oil "Benefits: Hydration, anti-inflammatory. Many people love coconut oil products to help fight dry, itchy skin and skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis,"
Oatmeal "Benefits: Anti-inflammatory, eczema relief.  Oatmeal contains anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant chemicals called avenanthramides," Wong says. "It also has moisturizing beta glucans and starches. It's the reason why oatmeal baths are so effective for conditions like eczema and rashes."
Shea Butter "Benefits: Anti-inflammatory, itch relief. Derived from the nut of a shea tree, shea butter is an ingredient in many moisturizers. "It seems to hydrate skin effectively because it's loaded with fatty acids," Geraghty says. These nutrients have a calming and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin."

Best Ingredients For Oily Skin
Lemongrass Lemongrass is known to help eliminate pests and relieve stress. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce redness, itching, and swelling of the skin. Its purifying properties can detoxify the skin and control shine by reducing oiliness. These benefits are why lemongrass is used in skincare products

Best Ingredients For Oily Skin
Clay "There are many different types of clays, all of which are incredibly effective at treating oily skin since they work by absorbing excess oils and drawing out impurities. Kaolin and bentonite clays are particularly powerful – you’ll usually find them in cleansers and face masks. "
Retinol (Vitamin A) "Also known as vitamin A, retinol increases cell turnover and boosts collagen production. It’s most commonly known as an anti-aging ingredient, but since it stimulates cell turnover in the lower layers of skin it also reduces the overproduction of sebum. This prevents the key symptoms of oily skin and prevents pore clogging, so is also considered an effective anti-breakout ingredient."

Best Ingredients For Dry Skin
Vitamin E An anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant, vitamin E is found in our sebum (the oil our skin produces). As dry skin lacks this oil, it’s important to add extra vitamin E (also known as tocopherol) into your routine – either as an ingredient within your skincare products or as a dietary supplement. It also helps to soothe and reduce sensitivity.
Hyaluronic acid Found in many serums and moisturisers because it’s a powerful hydrator which works well alongside other hydrating ingredients. It cleverly acts like a magnet to draw moisture into the skin (each molecule can actually hold up to 1000 times its weight in water), so it’s ideal for improving skin’s hydration levels.

'Products made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (or both) as the active ingredients, because these products generally offer good sun protection and have fewer active-ingredient health concerns.'
"Holly Thaggard is the founder of Supergoop in San Antonio, Texas, a protective skin-care brand that puts sunscreen at the forefront. She says both mineral and chemical sunscreens can be right for you depending on your skin type. “Chemical sunscreens absorb UV light, so your skin doesn’t, and they allow for weightless, sometimes clear formulas. These are great for daily wear, multiple skin tones, the beach, and working out. Mineral sunscreens are made up of tiny white, UV-protecting particles — zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both — and are more gentle, perfect for anyone with sensitive or acne-prone skin.”
