Evaluation
What informed and motivated my design decisions? (e.g. the breadth of my research)
Both my FMP and translate and transform projects were about music so they tied in well with each other, the research I did initially for Translate and Transform handed itself well to my FMP subject. I began by looking at existing projects within areas of practice I am interested in which were typography and music. Through my love of music and the inspiration of past projects, I was able to come up with my own brief.
What changes and developments has my project gone through?
This has been a very rocky process; I have always kept to the music and typography/editorial theme but I guess the main aspect of my project that had changed was the outcome and what I would be creating. I have always been advised to not think of the final outcome until it comes to making it but I struggle with this.
Did I manage my time well throughout the unit?
This has been the worst project for me in terms of time management. I think I underestimated how much time I really had and then when it got to Easter I had a lot of catching up to do. I managed by text well and as per, but my imagery let me down and I struggled to come up with ideas for this which meant I was behind and catching up these last couple of weeks.
How did I respond to feedback?
I found it hard to deal with feedback for this unit, especially in the second half of the term. I knew there wouldn't be a lot of direction as of course this is our final unit and FMP so we would have to do the majority on our own.
Are there areas of my design process that need more practice?
Again, used a lot more photoshop, in particular the pen tool to cut out for my collages which I got used to and found very efficient. I mentioned in previous evaluations was an area I needed more practice in. I did struggle a lot with image making and coming up with ideas for that as per, but as I know this has never been my strongest area.
On reflection, are there any improvements that I would make to my final outcome?
If I had more time, I would’ve wanted to add some more interesting details to my book. For example, some insert pages and maybe a fold-out page. I'm a little disappointed as I mentioned this for my last project however I'm not sure it would've even fit in with the aesthetic of my book.

two more pages.
on the left: Background is a mine quary to represent the miners strikes and problems that were a critical time in the 1980s I also added some of the strike posters with the iconic ‘coal not dole’ slogan on them. lastly the policemen arresting the vicar is from extinction rebellion. I think this is a nice comparison to show how there are still protests going on aimed at the government.
on the right: this is more abstract and shows the different ways we listen to music now to back in the 80s. I added the london skyline to emphasise that this is all about the UK. I set the background as space as i thought the disco ball (which is mentioned in my content) looked a bit like a planet. I wanted to make it look like the earphones, which represents present day, we’re connected to the cassette, which represents the 80s.
I also think adding some of the lyrics into the collage will be a nice affect. I may add a drop shadow so they look a bit more like they’re cut out from a newspaper.

putting imagery in place
Tumblr media
I think this image is a good starter; it shows a present-day businessman holding an old-style 80s television which represents his briefcase. I wanted to use a business man to link with the 'Yuppies' I talked about in previous research

These are images of the jam's logo and two of their albums. I'm not quite sure which colours I am going to use, however they will be taken from these references.

lyrics in the style of the miner strike posters.
Personally, I think this style fits well and it looks like it resembles the protest signs I was aiming to replicate.

Miner strike posters
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to take some typographic inspiration from these miner stike posters. The miner strikes were such an iconic part of Thatcher's britain and encompass my project nicely. I'm thinking of adding the lyrics throughout the book in the style of these posters.
