The biggest problem with every single bad review of Captain Marvel coming from a man is that none of them seem to comprehend a narrative that isn’t meant for them.

They see Carol finally breaking free from being gaslighted by the Kree as “emotionally underwhelming,” never realizing that a climactic, emotional showdown with her abuser would be giving him exactly what he wants. Being in control of her emotions? Choosing not to react to a provocation? That’s strength most male comic fans don’t understand. They see masculine-coded strength as the only valid kind. Carol not being angry and putting Yon-Rogg down in a shonen-esque battle doesn’t make sense to them because it’s not what they would have done.

They see a woman struggling to work through lies she’d been told as “bad narrative structure,” when in reality the movie was never about building Carol up from nothing, but about her realizing her true potential through seeing past those lies. Carol’s character arc parallels many women attaining social consciousness, throwing off patriarchal lies they’d been conditioned to accept about who they are and what they can do. Her story isn’t about attaining power, but about embracing her true potential that had been deliberately hidden from her.

They see Carol’s emotions not lining up with the lies her abusers told her about being too emotional as “bad writing” or “bad acting,” never realizing that that was exactly the point. They only understand defiance as impassioned, outward battles of will and pride, not understanding that quiet, steadfast refusal to bend to others’ designs of who you should be is strength too.

Brie Larson was absolutely right. Carol’s story is not for men. And nothing proves that more than all the fanboys who didn’t understand it throwing fits on the internet.

I really hope she did… I felt kinda bad crying in front of her like that. You know her, she isn’t the type to let out her feelings easily, she’s always so professional and put together, I tried very hard to be like that too, but eventually cracked. I did have a great time, though. That’s for sure. 

It was pretty funny to mention that to Yuki, because I began the conversation pretty non-chalantly, like, “So, you and Mayuyu (I called her “Mayuyu”, of course) talk about marriage pretty often don’t you?” and she was like “hm? what do you mean?”, and then I tell her I was simply referring to all the different magazine interviews that came out lately, especially before the SSK, where she and Mayu talked about graduation and the future and of course, since they are of the age of marriage, interviewers asked them about marriage and they talked about that. And she was like: “Oh, yeah, yes, we happened to talk about it” and I was like: “but Mayuyu said she doesn’t want to get married ‘cause she’s gonna be too busy with work, right? what about you?” and she was like: “well, I do wanna get married, but I also wanna keep working…” and then I go: “So, why don’t you get married with Mayuyu?” She looks at me pretty confused, like she thinks about what I just said, for like 3 seconds, then she bends forward as though she didn’t hear me, “Sorry, what?” and I go: “I said, why don’t you get married with Mayuyu?”, so she repeats: “Get married? With Mayu-chan?” – it was so freaking hilarious, ‘cause she legit thought I was messing up with my Japanese and that I didn’t mean what I actually meant – so I go like: “Yes, yes, GET MARRIED. WITH MAYUYU. That’s what I mean.” But then time’s up so she simply looks at me with a very creeped out look and goes: “no no, we can’t get married, we’re friends!” I wanted to die of embarrassment, but fuck if it was worth it.
