How the Heck are Lapel Pins Made?
We all have one… hiding deep in a drawer or on an old hat, maybe on a canvas bag or your favorite jean jacket, showing pride to a particular passion like a badge of honor. I’m talking about Lapel Pins - they come in so many shapes and sizes… and let’s not forget about the colors!
Although lapel pins are utilized for many purposes, have you ever wondered how they’re actually created? Check out the videos below to see how!
This video shows how custom, die struck lapel pins are created. This illustrates the traditional process of lapel pin customization.
Die cast pins are some of our favorites - this process creates the unique shapes and outlines for the molds.
The last video shows an up-to-date, automatic process of how lapel pins are created.

007 - Lapel Pin Detonator
James Bond is tasked with saving the world (and himself) from crime. No matter how beautiful the criminal may be, James Bond seems to be surrounded by women, men and gadgets that want him dead. In the 19th edition of the 007 series “The World Is Not Enough’, the custom lapel pin and the money were triggered when the two were in close proximity of each other.
BOOM!!!!!

Patches Patches Patches
The Patch is Back
Embroidered patches, woven patches, and custom patches are a fun, creative way to add a dash of individuality to any piece of clothing. School uniforms, work clothes, casual outfits, and everything in between are fair game for patches.
But it's not just about clothing. Companies use custom patches of all kinds to emblazon their brand name and/or logo onto laptop cases, jackets, tee shirts, sweatshirts, award sashes, and more.
Patches are Easy to Apply and Look Great
For decades, travelers have even collected patches from places all over the world and added them to luggage and garments as a way to show where they've been. Patches are fast, eye-catching way to convey key information. That's one reason businesses large and small use embroidered patches and woven patches for promotional purposes and employee awards.
It's easy to add one or more patches to clothing or anything else because a quick burst of heat from an household iron does the trick. Some people prefer to sew patches onto garments, which also works well. Once on, patches stay put, don't fade and always add a touch of class and uniqueness to the item they adorn.
The Many Kinds of Patches
What's the difference between embroidered and woven types of patches? What are "merrowed edges" and die-cut patches? These are important terms that people should know about before buying patches for their clothing or personal items.
Once NASA used a merrowed patch for its Gemini 8 mission crew patches in 1966, the merrowed version became the standard patch for corporate and specialty use. Since those days, the majority of patches have merrowed rather than cut edges that leave extra fabric outside the sewn perimeter of the patch.
Maybe you need a little more than standard?
Screen-print patches:
When there is a lot of detail on a patch, and neither embroidering nor weaving is a good option, patches can be done as screen prints.
Glow-in-the-dark patches:
For people who spend time outdoors after dark, like runners, bicyclists, members of walking clubs and even late-evening hikers, glow-in-the-dark patches are not only great looking but functional. When safety is a concern, a glowing patch delivers value and a completely unique look.
Versatility
Patches have always been popular with clubs and corporations because they carry a distinctive look and are versatile. It's easy to apply a patch to bags, garments, hats, luggage, and virtually anything a person wears or carries. Patches come in all colors and an infinite variety of custom designs, are the perfect showcase for a company logo, an award designation or a charitable cause. A quick glance at any Boy Scout's or police officer's uniform is a fast lesson in the many types of patches in use.
Ease of attachment is one reason patch enthusiasts love custom patches of all kinds. The two most common ways to apply a patch are heat and Velcro. A common iron activates the adhesive on the back of a patch and permanently affixes it in a matter of minutes. Velcro-back patches are also quite popular. There are several other ways to attach patches, like sewing, but heat-activated backing and Velcro are by far the most common methods.
Patches add style and individuality wherever they turn up. Whether woven or embroidered, a simple patch conveys a wealth of information in a very small space. That's why so many corporations use patches for brand visibility and identity. Individuals use patches to spruce up outfits and add a unique flair to any item. Patches are back, and they're here to stay!

Hard Enamel Pins vs. Soft Enamel Pins
To the untrained eye the difference between hard enamel pins and soft enamel pins can be tricky.
However, both kinds of pins start out the exact same way, with some raised areas and some recessed ones. Later on in the process, those recessed areas are filled with enamel paint, but from this point onward, the two types of pins undergo totally different finishing methods.
Hard Enamel Pins
Hard Enamel pins are filled multiple times with enamel paint. That causes the paint to nearly (but not quite) flow over the raised metal. The surface of the pin is then polished so the metal and paint are flat, smooth and flush. These pins give off a shine and have an elegant appeal. Hard enamel custom lapel pins work well for corporate events because they're shiny, quite durable, and give off a polished jewelry look.
Try rubbing your fingers over the surface of a hard enamel pin and you’ll immediately notice something: it’s exceptionally smooth. There are no ridges or uneven areas at all.
Soft Enamel Pins
Soft Enamel pins, on the other hand, are filled only once and never polished. That's why the enamel-filled areas in soft pins have a slightly concave surface shape. They are also textured and a bit less expensive than hard pins. Most people notice that the soft enamel lapel pins have a distinct color contour look that creates more visual depth and eye appeal.
When you rub your finger or thumb over the surface of a soft Enamel pin, you will easily notice the ridges because the paint sits at a slightly lower level than the metal borders surrounding it.
Die Struck Pins
Die Struck Pins do not have enamel paints. Just like soft enamel pins, die struck pins use a raised and recessed surface which gives the pin texture. Die Struck pins have a classic look using only the color of the plating on the surface of the pin.
Events, Special Occasions, Awards, Causes, Etc.
People use both kinds of custom lapel pins for logos, as recognition awards, to display their favorite symbols, to show club membership, and for hundreds of other reasons. Both types of coatings show up on pins in every category of use, but there are some cases where one type, hard or soft, is preferred.
Hard Enamel Pins: For example, are a favorite for corporate functions because of its classy, durable, and sometimes “serious” look. The appearance is flatter but more durable and substantial. These pins exude a more serious vibe and look much more like jewelry than their soft counterparts.
Have a lot of detail in your design and need it fast?
Offset printed pins may be perfect for your pin project!
An Offset Printed pin is a digital print of a design allowing us to capture full detail and color. These are good for photographs or images with a lot of color gradients, text or images that need to be an exact replica. Offset printed pins are slightly thinner pins with a clear epoxy dome for shine and protection. Also, Offset Printed pins can be produced quicker than traditional enamel pins.

Adding Value to Your Pin with Custom Backing Cards
Backing Cards Enhance Any Lapel Pin
It is a well-known fact that custom lapel pins are a great way to showcase your business, cause, accomplishment or personal brand. But whatever your reason for choosing lapel pins to get your message across, it's important to remember the custom backing card option when designing your pin.
What Are Backing Cards?
A custom backing card is much more than just a “holding area” for a lapel pin. A properly designed card conveys a wealth of information, maintains the physical integrity of the pin, and acts as a business card of sorts.
Backing Card Thickness: Standard and Thick
Standard: At Get Lapel Pins we offer customers two thicknesses to choose from for backing cards. Our "standard" card compares with the thickness of a typical business card you see every day. It is strong enough to hold the pin in place, protect it from routine handling and adds much to the general look of the product. Keep in mind that people who receive lapel pins expect a high-quality backing card to be attached. Cards, as noted below, do much more than hold the pin in place. They serve as the perfect place to add written information about the significance of the pin and the related cause, product, or event. A "standard" thickness custom backing card makes the attached lapel pin stand out as a centerpiece of attention.
Thick: For customers who want backing cards that are even thicker than our standard versions, we also offer "thick" cards that do not flex or bend. Clients who prefer thick cards use lapel pins for all the same reasons buyers of standard backing cards do: to enhance their brand, to add value to a product, to draw attention to a cause or merely to promote themselves or their company.
Key Points to Remember: Standard backing cards are about as thick as a typical business card while "thick" backing cards are more rigid, and will not bend or flex at all.
Available Sizes for Custom Backing Cards
At Get Lapel Pins, we are happy to offer our clients backing cards of any size or shape, along with the two thickness options mentioned above. What does that mean to you? It means that you can completely customize your order to the most exacting specifications for no additional cost.
Our customers can, of course, choose any size card they wish, but the four most common sizes requested are 2" x 2"(2 inches by 2 inches), 2"x3.5" (the size of a standard business card), 2.375" x 3", 3'x 3". Note that the lapel pins you order can be positioned anywhere on the backing card. This applies to cards of both thicknesses and all sizes.
As the photos show, the size of your card is determined by two factors: the size of the pin and the amount of detail (written or artistic) on the backing card. Very small pins with just a few words of accompanying printing or artwork can comfortably fit on a small card if that's what you want. Larger pins, of course, might call for a larger card, typically when the card includes lots of written text. Take a look at the images to get an idea of how card size, pin size, and the amount of written text are related to each other.
Written Detail on Custom Backing Cards
Customers often ask whether backing cards can include printed text on both the front and back side. The answer is yes. We receive regular orders from clients who want printed messages on both back and front, just the front, and sometimes only the reverse side of the card. It's a decision that is entirely up to the client, and we're happy to oblige.
Note that all card printing and artwork is digitally created to enhance the professional look of the final product. Our top-quality digital printing equipment makes your backing card message stand out. Plus, there is never a minimum requirement on the number of ink colors you can choose, which means your lapel pins and cards can be of the highest artistic quality. If you want to make a lasting impression on your clients, constituents, friends, family members or whoever you are creating lapel pins for, the team at Get Lapel Pins offers you as many options as possible.
Low Prices, High Quality, Excellent Customer Service
At Get Lapel Pins, we are proud to offer the most competitive prices in the lapel pin industry, along with top-notch customer service and the utmost in quality. Custom lapel pins are a favorite way for individuals and businesses to highlight any message.
Backing cards for lapel pins can add a lot of value for all types of customers. Pins given as awards often include text that details the person’s accomplishments, name, and date the award was presented. Pins used for promotional or advertising purposes typically include backing cards that offer more details about the product, event or concept being promoted. It helps to think of backing cards as a place for additional messages or essential information that might not fit on the pin itself. Note that many people collect lapel pins and consider the backing card an important, informative piece of the set. A lapel pin without a backing card is a bit like a birthday gift without wrapping, a box or an accompanying card.
We’ve done large and small jobs for thousands of happy customers already, so we’re always glad to create your customized lapel pins to exact specifications.
