🪷Najma Akhtar🪷✨

Some months ago I discovered one of my favourite artists to date!

Najma Akhtar is an Indian singer, born and currently living in the UK. She sings in a partícular vocal style called "Ghazal", a genre that originated from Arabia at the end of the 7th century, and which was later absorbed into Indian poetry and music. The emotional nature of the songs is channeled by Najma with suck clarity and intensity, that even a person who has no understanding of the language nor its musical tradition cannot help but being complealty captivated. Her haunting, hypnotic voice is accompanied by a very interesting production, you can hear it right from the beginning, with her debut album "Qareeb". What makes her music extraordinary even within the genre itself is that, while keeping the main instruments the traditional ensamble requires, she introduced some jazz elements like saxophone and bass.

So if you'd like to listen to Indian music but don't know where to start, Najma is a truly an incredible artist✨🪷 I have linked her website if you'd like to know more about her music. Apparently her particular style can be also described as "Indian gothic", which is super cool, I think you can hear it, in her early albums especially. It's very reverbery and transparent almost, with the harmonies that overlap with the percussion instruments...ah! PERFECTION👌🏻 I think if your a fan of Cocteau Twins or This Mortal Coil you'll enjoy this (it gives me similar vibes).

ALSO, I just discovered (like right now researching for this) that in 1994 she performed with Jimmy Page a version of "The Battle of Evermore", please check it out, it's astronomical.✨⭐
