omg YES. idk i may have made this obvious but i’m doing a graphic novel adaptation where herbert is as important of a character as pip. i think someone who thinks so highly of pip, lives with him, and spends basically all of his time with him would be a great contrast to how pip thinks about himself. because while i think pip is genuinely capable of redemption (the way he thinks about people is like actually narsty and how he treats them is pretty bad as well but i don’t think he’s done anything truly impossible to come back from especially because the people who love him are kind enough to give him chances) i also think he needs to be pushed towards it by those same people who love him like backing away from him!!! ex. herbert going to egypt, and obviously joe avoids him for like the last stage and a half of the book (then that angel comes to make sure he doesn’t beef it from being left alone pip you best be grateful) and pip is the one who has to make the actual effort to apologize and redeem himself.

and then in terms of pistella v pipbert, my take is that pistella is mad important to the plot of great expectations and absolutely cannot be overlooked because the way that they interact with each other and others interact about them basically shows everyone’s characterization (the way estella treats pip the way pip thinks about estella the way herbert tries to get pip to detach himself from estella, the way biddy warns pip about estella….theres so much character in all of that) but at the end of the novels canon pistella need to leave each other the FUCK alone. i swear to god they erode each others character development.

and then on that i think pip genuinely is into men and just doesn’t have the language. look at how he talks about startop! oh he’s beautiful? feminine? kind? sounds like you’re kinda into him. and the way he talks about and to herbert, lives with him literally forever, like come ON. at one point he is living with herbert (and clara) in cairo and tells biddy and joe he’s “quite an old bachelor” like he’s good! he’s chillin! he goes about having a happy home life in gods most unconventional way but i’m not joking when i say i’m happy for him.

so in my personal interpretation pip fully recovers from his illness, lives with joe and biddy for awhile but can never quite get over hebert, how he treated herbert, how herbert left, how he’ll never know how pip feels now (similar to the lime kiln scene….herbert will be disappointed, etc.) and eventually he gets on a boat to cairo and is like herbert i will do anything for your forgiveness i miss you etc.

erm yeah i have a million more things to say on this but these are mostly my interpretations i hope that you don’t think i overtook your post!! i love talking about stuff like this. and yes i’m a total pip apologist it’s like my greatest flaw but i love hearing your thoughts on him!! pls never feel like calling him out for how bad he sucks is an insult i literally agree i just wanna give him a second chance of some kind.

Isn't this just Herbert does with Pip throughout the whole book? Herbert simply idolises Pip as Pip does with Estella, fangirlling over every silly little thing he does, but Pip is always giving "meh".

omg hi! i was literally at a dickens conference this past week so i missed your ask, but i used to be crazy about taylor swift (red-evermore, then i stopped listening to her lol) and i LOVEEEE when people ask me how i feel about songs in relation to grex so in short like big big ty for this ask

n e ways i think tolerate it is a total pipbert song, especially later as i would imagine herbert gets pretty bitter with pip (im thinking after herbert asks pip to detach himself from her and he’s like ‘sorry buddy no can do’ ) (even! the lyric “i sit and listen, i polish plates until they gleam and glisten” matches up very well with that conversation followed by herbert straightening up the house. somewhere around chapter 30 i think read it and weep)

now “i made you my temple my mirror my sky/now i’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life” is going to make me lose my mind, because from pips narration, he continually SAYS that herbert is his best friend, they’re so attached to each other, herbert is endlessly kind and patient, etc etc etc. but herbert is objectively a minor character, as in, pip doesn’t talk about him so much that he can be considered part of the main cast (in the way he talks about estella for example) it feels like such a herbert sentiment especially considering the idea that great expectations is pip’s autobiography/memoir

finally, “what if i break free and leave you in ruins, took this dagger in me and removed it, gain the weight of you and lose it, believe me i could do it” reminds me a lot of cairo. it’s just an interpretation of mine, but i think part of the reason herbert agrees to go so far away is because he realizes that pip has mistreated him for a long time. he needs to go be by himself instead of begging for crumbs of attention from his boyroommate. and if pip really does want him around for companionship and love, as opposed to convenience, he’s gonna have to cross an ocean to prove it (which he eventually does!)

dickens autobio nonsense is CRAZYYY pips constant guilt is theoretically autobiographical, obvs what you said about belinda and matthew and herbert being based on various dickens, i think everyone in ge is a little bit charles dickens. i can’t speak for david copperfield i’ve yet to read it but right before dickens published ge he published a letter essentially trying to shut down rumors about him and his ex wife (obviously it only fanned the fire big style) and then he writes his most guilty shameful character evaaa??? he’s so crazy can’t take him anywhere.

My Roman Empire is the fact that David Copperfield is semi-autobiographical about Dickens’s own early life, Mr. And Mrs. Micawber are based on his parents and Herbert Pocket from GE on his eldest son. The most hilarious part is when Matthew and Belinda Pocket have the exact same housekeeping style as David and Dora Copperfield and that Herbert Pocket idolises Pip the same way as Mrs. Micawber idolises her heavily indebted husband. Lmao Charles Dickens your family sure has a impressive lineage.

Btw I wonder if Charles Dickens also randomly pulls his hair like Matthew Pocket
