i just love how hadestown’s development ended up weirdly mimicking oral transmission of myth. all the dead ends embedded in the bway version of the show that used to go somewhere in other versions, like the “you’re early”/”i missed you” exchange in way down hadestown being picked up in nytw doubt comes in but now it’s just hanging there uncompleted in act i? i’m thinking of the homeric narrative false starts, like the feints at resolving the trojan war by single combat, the counterfactuals, the “he would have kept on going had not a god stopped him,” the gesture at a version of the story where telemachus strings the bow and starts the shooting. the vestigial traces of all the other ways to tell the story, all the other ways this story has been told.
