Absolutely. The thing is, the movie shows us what Damien looks like when he’s happy, and that isn’t it. He mostly just seems in shock after his mother’s fall, which is understandable. He’s 5 years old at that point - kids are only just starting to understand what death is at that age. I don’t think he really understood what had happened or how much worse it might have been.

Especially when you consider that Mrs. Baylock is shown influencing him in some way before it happens. He probably was confused on a lot of levels? To at least some degree, he’s just had his actions controlled by someone else and he still has no clue exactly what happened or why. Not a major surprise he’d just seem kind of numb.

Even his famous Creepy Smile at his father’s funeral… he’s smiling at the funeral of someone who just tried to kill him and was prevented from doing it. I’m not saying it’s not a chilling reaction, but he’s not just enjoying death out of nowhere.
