The Ghosts of Glensheen Mansion
Glensheen Mansion is a gorgeous and historical estate in Duluth, Minnesota. It rests on the banks of the Lake Superior and looking over the coastline that spreads south. The home belonged to the Congdon family who built between 1905 and 1908, and quickly became a symbol of the area's wealth.
While the Congdon family as a whole is an interesting story (the father of the family stood up to John D. Rockefeller, which if you know him in history, that was hard to do!), our ghost story begins a long while later on in the estate's history - following Elizabeth Congdon.
Elizabeth Congdon was one of the daughters of Congdon family. She never married, instead focusing on charity work and helping her mother, and adopted four kids in her lifetime. During the 1960s, she and her family had decided that upon her death, the mansion would be given to the University of Minnesota.
Now, one of Elizabeth's daughters wasn't too happy about that - Marjorie Caldwin. She was desperate for money at the time, having lived a bit of a wild lifestyle after marrying Roger Caldwell. And since she had $8 million as inheritance, the couple's plans went very dark very quickly.
Late in the night of June 27, 1977, Elizabeth and her nurse, Velma Pietila, were murdered.
Here's where the ghost part of the story comes in. The house opened to the public two years after the murders as a house museum, as Elizabeth wanted. However visitors and staff began to notice shadowy figures moving around the hallways with them, and odd appearances in photos that they took. The figures also took to looking out the windows of the mansion over the waters of the lake, and oddly enough, the basement.
I myself went to the mansion in 2023 on a day trip while traveling. And while I can't officially say that I felt or saw anything that others have, I can say this. The halls of that beautiful mansion are warm and full of life, and maybe that's how the two ladies would have preferred to have people remember that mansion.
