Valerie Gray Week 2025

4. Loss

We don't see Valerie much between her first introduction in Parental Bonding and Shades of Gray, but when we see her she is more often than not hanging out with Kwan. I doubt it was a relationship people making the show put much thought into, but in my opinion it is still there: They were friends and then they were not.

We meet Valerie for the first time when Kwan tells her she is dateless in season 1 episode 2 Parental Bonding, which is honestly pretty rude and thoughtless thing to just throw at someone, so I wouldn't blame Valerie if she didn't want to talk to him after that.

But that's not what she does.

To me the fact that was not enough to hurt their relationship says something about how close they were. Especially since we know Valerie knows how to hold a grudge.

Here is Valerie and Kwan hanging out just two of them in season 1 episode 4, Attack of the Killer Garage Sale and them having ice cream + confiding on each other about the insecurities Spectra has brought up in season 1 episode 10, My Brother's Keeper.

At this point in the series Valerie is only a minor background character. We don't see her much. But we see her spending time with Kwan outside of school just the two of them, and we don't see her do that with anyone else until way into season 2 when her friendship with Star is shown, which is why I think they were genuinely friends and enjoyed each other's company.

And then there is Shades of Gray, and we never see them together again. Even when Dash decides Kwan is not part of the A-listers anymore, he doesn't go to Valerie, instead he tries to hang out with Sam and Tucker.

...I think Valerie would have been angry at him if he had tried to be friends again just because Dash kicked him out from A-listers. So, that probably wouldn't have worked out anyway, but it would have been nice to see him try. And it's kind of sad if they truly never got any kind of closure -if there was never an apology or any attempt at reaching out. Friendship-breakups are hard, and I just feel like out of her old friend group losing Kwan might have hurt Valerie the most.
