at a conference I attended recently, a researcher pointed to the difficulty of finding material in archives because so much depends on the metadata and the terminology used to describe things changes over time. "it would be so helpful," the researcher said, "if I typed 'lesbian' into the library of congress database, it would also show me results that were categorised in the 50s, when the materials were interpreted as 'intimate female friendships'"

which is what tag wrangles at Archive Of Our Own do incredibly effectively: searching for "omegaverse" also leads to "alpha/beta/omega dynamics" and "alternate universe: a/b/o" and so on. but ao3 achieves this frankly incredible categorisation and indexing system by the power of countless volunteers putting in hours and hours of unpaid and unthanked free time, and it's completely understandable that most archives do not have that kind of infrastructure, but also how incredible that a fan-run website has better searchability, classification, and accessibility than the library of congress

my feelings on all shipping....you are more than welcome to not like a ship for any reason at all. You don't have to justify your dislike and I promise you nobody wants to read your manifesto about why you dislike it either. The ONLY thing you are asked to do is to keep your mouth shut about it, whether that is never mentioning it at all, or posting about it untagged and out of sight of people who do like it. That is common sense and courtesy.

We have problems like antis and bullying because people think that shipping is a form of activism. It isn't. Like I dunno how much clearer to be on this lol, it's not. People are going to ship things that annoy or even personally offend you and it is on YOU to stay away from that content, not them to never make it. Literally if you are feeling "unsafe" because of a fictional character kissing another fictional character that is a skill issue and you making anti shipping posts about it is just you admitting you can't handle yourself in public and should probably have your parents monitoring your online time

saw the pylos shield today, which I am very normal about. was no one going to tell me that the rim had decorative embossing all around??

time to recreate this shield I guess I do NOT have time to make a shield.

ANYWAY, very cool to see the punched athenian inscription in person:

(the inscription is from a trophy the Athenians set up after the Battle of Pylos in 425 BCE and in its entirety reads "ΑΘΗΝΑΙΟΙ ΑΠΟ ΛΑΚΕΔΑΙΜΟΝΙΩΝ ΣΚ ΠΥΛΟ" or "The Athenians from the Spartans from Pylos.")

on the one hand, it is unlikely this is the very shield thucydides mentions as having been dropped by brasidas at pylos and subsequently set up as a trophy by the athenians.

on the other hand, that won't stop me because I can't read 😌
