With every reread I love Camilla Hect even more. She feels more than sees her necromancer blow up, carries his bones around despite boe being like "ayo you can't do that", has to deal with Judith and Corona, meets Harrowhark on an empty planet and she's not even flabergasted. She basically becomes Nona's parent as soon as she realises what's going on and continues to give off stressed mom energy the entire book, except for the part where she catches fire and gets stabbed. The things she tried to fight in the series so far include 2/3 main villains of each book but I'm pretty sure she would've suckerpunched John if given the chance.
Paul needs to honor her legacy by spartan kicking John into the River.

John's disbelief in the possibility of forgiveness is certainly a core part of what has gone wrong with him (and, thus, with the universe) in The Locked Tomb.
But we repeatedly see big forgiveness moments (Harrow's "Have you really forgiven me?" and Mercy's "I forgive you, Lord!") precede shit going extremely sideways. Forgiveness heralds big, climactic reckonings--reckonings that pointedly don't come with any kind of healing or absolution.
When someone in The Locked Tomb says "I forgive you," you are about to see acts of violence.

in order to not succumb to sex negative conservatism you have to accept that people will get off to things that are upsetting to you. and you cannot assume anything about what they have or have not experienced, what they do or do not believe, and how they act based solely on what gets them off. even if it's extremely confusing and disturbing to you. there are people who have only ever had heterosexual vanilla sex in missionary with the lights off, who actively contribute to more real world harm than your average fetish artist. kink is not a reliable source of information on someone's moral standing. it just feels good to think that way.
