Edit: I know there are already black gods and goddesses in mythology native to Africa. And I’d love to explore those characters and their personalities. I loved Greek mythology when i was younger, thats what I had access to, and I thought it’d be cool to cast them with black people in the roles to celebrate blackness. Plus, greek mythology has been interpreted and reinterpreted in so many ways ( for instance there was a reincarnation of Oedipus based around enslaved blacks in the U.S.). I can also do whatever the fuck I want 🙄 There’s enough whitewashing and eurocentric media for you to partake in so dont @ me, hoe.

Part 2 of Black Gods and Goddesses [Greek]
There’s probably going to be Part 3 and I may edit this one. I’m a little unsure of Hermes. I think Glover would be a good Pan, God of Wildnerness and Fertility 🤔 You can find Part 1 on my Dashboard or under the tag #blackgodsandgoddesses
Edit (2021)
A few things. One, idgaf about yt ppl complaining that im “stealing” their culture. Im a Black woman in the U.S. Our culture, creativity, and bodies are consumed and imitated by nonblack people around the globe. This is not that. If existing, I doubt gods or an other entity could be boxed in by human constructs of race or gender. (Also, are there not Black Greeks? Its an ethnicity or nationality, not a race, I-)
Secondly, about Hephaestus! People keep saying “isn’t he ugly though?” While Im glad we all agree Chadwick Boseman was fine, I think the Smith’s description was based in ableism that wanted to paint disability as undesirable; therefore, making it his marriage with Aphrodite an appropriate punishment for a goddess who was supposed to be one of the most beautiful and desirable among of the gods.
Im not about to scour the internet looking for a Black person to call “ugly,” “lame”, or “undesirable.” Those are labels too often connected to Blackness and Black people. And unfortunately, there is a severe lack of Black disabled actors visible in media. I like Chadwick and there are other factors that led me to my “casting” decisions than looks alone. He was humble, hard-working, warm, and talented. I think its a great fit.
