Understanding Domain Names
A domain name is the online address of a website. You would require a website's domain in order to locate it online. It functions similarly to a home's address fully dedicated to you.
Importance of Domain names:
It allows your website to be more recognizable to potential customers.
A Good domain name can also help your SEO (search engine optimization) and act as a marketing tool. This is because it would appear in searches and direct more traffic to the website.
It allows you to maintain brand ownership and brand protection.
Using a domain name is simple. You would be able to keep your domain name if you had to relocate to a different country or switch hosting providers. The identity that you have developed is unaffected by your domain name's global reach.
Different Aspects of a Domain Name
An essential part of the internet that converts domain names into IP addresses is the Domain Name System (DNS). It serves as a directory, enabling users to visit websites by entering memorable domain names rather than complex IP addresses. DNS servers are dispersed worldwide and work together to provide fast and dependable domain name resolution. They hold information about domain names and their IP addresses, allowing users to visit websites by just putting in the domain name. On the Internet, root servers are located on 13 different servers. Each of these servers keeps a copy of the same file, which serves as the primary index for the address books on the Internet.
Domain Name Structure
A domain comprises of numerous labels, separated by a dot. Each label indicates a level and location within the DNS. Subdomains are extensions added to the primary domain name that are used to classify and arrange various website components. A dot separates them from the primary domain name, like blog.gigalayer.com. Subdomains can be used to host distinct content, build distinct websites, or grant access to particular services.
Verisign runs the leading domain name registries for two of the most significant top-level domains on the Internet,.com and.net, and contributes to the security, stability, and resilience of the DNS and the internet.
Top Level Domains: This is the last part of a domain name after the last dot. An example of this is .com. IANA, a branch of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), is in charge of regulating TLDs. Top level domains can be generic (gTLDs) such as .com, .org, or .net. They could also be (ccTLDs) which are country code top level domains such as .ng, .uk or za. In addition to this, there are sponsored top level domains (sTLDs) such as .edu or .gov.
Second Level Domains: This is the main identifier of the website as it holds the name of the website. In the case of www.gigalayer.com, “gigalayer” would be the SLD. This is because It comes before the last dot.
Subdomain: With the use of subdomains, website owners can establish distinct areas or subsites inside their primary website. For instance, a business might have a blog under a different domain. For example blog.gigalayer.com.
Registering a Domain Name
There are three R's in the domain registration procedure: Registrar, Registrant, and Registry.
Registry: A domain registry is a centralized database with current data about domain names and their associated owners. A sizable organisation that oversees the top-level domain is in charge of this database.
Registrar: a domain registrar's primary responsibility is to make domain names accessible to the general public and assist the registry in updating its records upon a customer's purchase.
Registrant: The registrant, who may be an individual or a company, registers a domain with a registrar and uses them to maintain their domain information and settings.
What can you do with a Domain name
A domain name can be used for a variety of purposes. The ability to establish a website is the primary purpose of a domain name. It could also be used to start a blog. By doing this, domain forwarding will be enabled, allowing you to access the blog or social networking page by forwarding your domain name to another website. After creating a website, hosting bespoke email addresses is the second most popular use of a domain name. Given that it includes your company name, it gives your email a more professional look. Furthermore, a variety of cloud services and apps can be utilised with domain names.
IP Address and Domain Names
An IP address is a special number that is given to every internet-connected device. Unlike IP addresses, domain names (such as google.com or wikipedia.org) are simpler for people to type and remember. They act as a link or identity for a specific IP address. DNS servers, which are dispersed around the internet, keep track of domain names and the IP addresses that go with them.To locate the relevant IP address and connect you to the website, your computer uses the DNS.
In order to prevent duplication or conflicts, ICANN assists in coordinating the distribution of IP addresses. Additionally, ICANN serves as the primary IP address storage centre, from which ranges are provided to regional registries, who then disperse them to network operators.
The WHOIS directory can be used as a tool to find out who owns IP addresses and domain names. WHOIS is a public list of domain names together with the individuals or groups linked to each name.

How is Klump different?
Some weeks ago, useklump.com, a financial loan company in Nigeria, launched to provide users with loans to sort their needs and pay back in 3 months; this would allow anyone who signs up and use Klump through partnered merchants to pay for products and services in installments. Usually, when I hear of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) companies, I ignore every possibility of patronage I may have in mind; my reason is the same as other Nigerians who have to deal with spamming, data bridging, and reputational damage for choosing to pay in installments.
These actions are strategies employed in the past by loan companies in Nigeria and have now gained the attention of every financial institution in the country. In addition, all reputable agencies must have received messages from relatives and acquaintances threatening them with implications for not fulfilling their loan terms.
Similarly, a couple of weeks ago, I received a picture of a person I only met once and shared contact with in 2018. The loan company claimed this person had failed to pay back his loan, and it is why they got in touch with me to contact him. Likewise, he's been declared wanted. The message further threatens to damage his reputation until the money is paid. When I eventually reached out, I learned that he owes N5,000. The question is, how does this method suffice for what he's owing? Many would argue that users agreed to terms and conditions, which have them repressed with such pressure. Still, people must be informed that loan companies are violating the ideal of open banking and users' personal information in Nigeria.
But here's what you should know
These loan companies understand that you will not be reading their terms and conditions, which I doubt many do; it is why you're tied until your loan is repaid. But that is not all. So many of them are extorting defaulters for additional loan interests.
When Klump was to launch in March, Celestine Omin (co-founder) said that they were building a responsible loan service that would respect users' data and the need for Nigerians to sort their pay in installments. This statement would only be valid if Klump had run for at least a year and gathered data that differentiated it from the usual operations of other loan companies in Nigeria. Paying close attention to how Klump is operating, there seem to be new values in its projection and promises, and many would have seen how its system is tailored to measure users' eligibility.
It is quite interesting to know that one may not get a loan except such individuals have records of revenue that could fulfill their loan request, however, declustering unwanted users from its base. You might have also seen the likes of companies Klump has partnered with since it launched. These companies would not be compromised for validity's sake. Gigalayer has built a reputation for almost a decade, putting its integrity in line to fulfill and support Klump's mission. Klump claims to be a responsible BNPL is indeed a substantial reason for anyone to do business with Klump. -- Aliu J.

Security Tips for Staying Online
In the last article, I gave an insight into how you can build a sustainable business online. Today, let's talk about the security challenges of running an online business within the website you've built.
Haven't chosen a secure hosting service, you must ignore the popular mantra that hackers only attack the big businesses. according to staysafeonline.org, it's asserted that small businesses have sensitive data that are vulnerable to phishing attacks while the big enterprises have money and personnel to enact strict security protocols and regulations to keep their information safe.
On a process to sell your goods and services, it would be worrisome to know that your customer's information has been obtained, therefore exposed their privacy to cybercriminals.this will not only affect your customers but also damage your business reputation.
Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that hackers cost its victims approximately $209 million within the first three months of 2016 alone. That number is projected to rise to about $6 trillion by 2021.
Here are the keys to keeping your business safe online.
Keep your software updated
Provide your employees with the best email practices
Review your error message as possible.
Choose the best hosting service
Switch to HTTP
Protect your computer network

Building Your Online Business.
For every business or brand to give rise to a perimeter, they need to think ahead of others who might take an interest in their customers. The primary purpose of every company is to sell more and deliver more services as possible. To grow your business in this modern age, it compels adequate awareness of finding one's niche to process your target audience and be always online.
You must know that "Whatever you do, you can always build a substantial business online"
As much as you believed that there are no passive ways of making it online, you must also understand that submitting oneself to be groomed, learn and expose to what actually works is the topmost importance.
However, building a cottage online is the contrary form of the physical shop or office that you offer your sales and services. Setting up a page on social media where you upload all that you do or give directory on how people can reach your brand can also serve as an alternative to what a website subsists.
Customers taking action on your website is a great thing. Whether they're buying your products or services, it means people are responding and you’re ready to grow and monetize.
Here are some ingredients to look out for when choosing to build an online company. I am just touching the surface here as well.
A short and catchy domain name, 8-10 characters long.
Precise landing page, greet your visitors with what you have.
Make a call to action button, if possible straight to order or buy now.
Keep improving your website, it defines you.
Lastly, security. Always monitor your website and web files.
So, stay adapted and consistently strive for your business. You’d be hearing from me again soon, keep fingers cross and stay focused on your business! Let me know what you think about building an online business. -- A. Jabata

Our Dash Nigeria meetup was exceptional
GigaLayer has been supporting cryptocurrency payments since 2017 and our support has grown from Bitcoin to multiple blockchain networks such as Ethereum, Litecoin, BitcoinCash, and Dash see https://gigalayer.com/payments
Nigeria happens to be a very strong crypto-enthusiasts country and we are none the less part of this cruize, even more so with our business. The future is in decentralization and open-source, any resistance can be futile. Some of the things we discussed were:
The blockchain technology.
How blockchain works in real life situations.
Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, what it matters.
The future of cryptocurrencies and decentralized payments.
GigaLayer’s integration with Dash and how it works.
We then took a break, had an open session for all and it was very intuitive, we came back to discuss Dash Nigeria, the community and how to buy Dash or accept Dash payments in Nigeria anchored by Dash Nigeria official. We gave attendees free dash credit up to N1,000 per attendee, showed them how to sweep crypto wallets and exchange payments. We even did sample transaction on our platform paying for services on gigalayer.com We had freshments & network, everyone was so excited, and we promised to deliver more events like this for our customers. Keep your fingers crossed, we will email all customers for our next event, if you are not part of GigaLayer, we encourage you to switch. Our support for dash is strong & wholehearted, we will continue to deliver more.

7 Ways to Protect and Secure your Joomla Account/Site

As a popular open source and CMS, Joomla is subjected to attack by hackers. There is no perfect security, but It is important to take all possible measures to protect your Joomla site and improves its security. Follow our guide on how to harden your security and prevent your site from being hacked.
1. Do not use admin as your administrator login to your Joomla account.
Be sure to change the username from phpMyAdmin in cPanel to something else and reset the password. Here is a step by step procedure to effect the username change: - Access the cPanel area - Click phpMyAdmin - Navigate and click the site default database (You can verify the site the current database from the configuration.php file) - Click the Users table (tablePrefix_Users) - Edit the administrator account and rename to something else (ensure the username is not renamed to "admin") - Change the password and encrypt accordingly (Use md5 function). A very secured password string should be deployed. - And finally, click "go" to save the changes
2. Update your Joomla installation to the latest version: (The latest updated version of Joomla is 3.8.3) The update could be applied at the administrative end. Joomla is usually http://domainname/administrator
Here are few security Tips on Joomla Security:
- Secure Administrator login with Strong password
- Don’t leave default administrator account as admin” and bad password; this is probably the biggest risk in Joomla. By keeping default “admin” and guessable password, you are helping Hacker in their job. Change default administrator login “admin” to something else, which is not easily guessable.
- Use the latest version of Joomla & Extensions. Most of the website owner don’t upgrade to the latest version which is a big risk. Almost every release, you will notice some security fixes so not upgrading to the latest version means keeping your website vulnerable. Review vulnerable extension list provided by Joomla and update the outdated extension. Review the change log each time Joomla release and upgrade if you see any critical fixes.
3. Use a secret key to login into Joomla Admin- Hide your administrator backend from potential hackers and allows those that have secret URL to access the administration area.
- Use login protection extension like KSecure who helps you to add a secret key. This means whenever you need to access admin login page you need to enter the secret key after administrator?. For example: example.com/administrator?testing (testing is the secret key here. If you don’t use this key, then you will be redirected to home page.)
4. Enable Search Engine Friendly (SEF)
SEF make the URLs of your Joomla website more Search Engine Friendly. And good SEF component also gives security benefit. A SEF component masks that information and makes it harder for a hacker to find eventual security vulnerabilities.
Solution: Enable Search Engine Friendly URLs into Joomla Administration area.
- Login into Joomla Administration
- Click on Site >> Global Configuration
- On-Site, tab selects “Yes” next to Search Engine Friendly URLs
5. Keep file/folder permission appropriate
All files should have good CHMOD configuration. Preferably,
- PHP files – 644
- Config Files – 644
- Other folders – 755
6. Use Web Application Firewall
Web Application Firewall (WAF) is essential for any website to protect it from top OWASP 10 most critical web application security risks, known vulnerabilities & malware. If you are hosting your Joomla website on VPS, then you may use ModSecurity which is free. However, if you are on shared hosting or don’t have time, then you may consider cloud-based web application firewall. Using WAF will help you from following.
Bot protection
Login protection
Backdoor protection
DDoS protection
SQL injection
XSS attack
Joomla specific vulnerabilities
7. Monitor your Joomla site
How do you know when your website goes down or defaced? Get notified by email, slack or SMS when your website is not reachable so you can take necessary actions immediately.
Solution: Use a free tool like StatusCake which monitors your website and notifies you when it goes down.
If you follow this guide, the chances are that your Joomla site is more secured. I hope this helps you.

We now accept Bitcoin

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency and worldwide payment system. It has come a long way since it was introduced as a decentralized virtual currency system in 2009. In pure value terms, a bitcoin today is valued at close to $17,000. Cryptocurrency is becoming a part of the larger financial system and has also seen immense growth in usage, so it makes sense that GigaLayer will provide it as an option for our users, who do not have too many alternate avenues to spend their virtual currency. Firstly, the instantaneous, peer-to-peer design of Bitcoin provides some level of trust between seller and buyer. Secondly, cryptocurrencies are secure in that they do not make customers prone to identity thefts. Finally, the virtual currency is not subject to cross-border conversion fee.
On GigaLayer we accept Bitcoin in nearly the same way that we accept credit card payments, the difference lies in how the payment is actually made. With Bitcoin, there’s no saved number that can be charged multiple times or at a later date. Instead, we invert the process by telling our customers how much they need to pay, and then provide a way for them to pay us that amount on our platform. Simply choose Bitcoin as your means of payment during your next order. You can also pay off any existing invoice with your Bitcoin; just open the invoice from your GigaLayer billing account and change the payment option to Bitcoin. All payments with Bitcoin are automatically processed!
Gigalayer really rocks! Providing you with the best payment option for your convenience.

What would you do if you suddenly lost all the files on your website ?

There has been an ongoing discussion about web-hosting companies, and recently I encountered another of such discussion, with individuals asking a common question: Who is the leading hosting provider in Nigeria? As you might have guessed there were different suggestions, and most of the suggestions were challenged by those who have used the service. The conversation went on and suddenly someone mentioned Gigalayer. This person went ahead to explain why he suggested Gigalayer but guess what? He wrapped up by saying ‘we have different types of Jollof rice but Nigerian Jollof stands out amongst it’s equal like an undisputed champion’. Guess what? At the end of the discussion, there was no objection. So I said to myself when quality meets convenience, the satisfaction of the client is inevitable. So back to the question, what would you do if your files got lost due to the negligence of your hosting provider? I am sure you would prefer not to answer the question rather you would look for ways to stop such a thing from happening. Gigalayer offers state of the art web hosting service on powerful and reliable web servers with cPanel accounts and much more. We offer series of features, which makes for easy management. The convenience of payment is extraordinary with each method tailored towards each individual needs. Also for the techy guys and developers out there looking for where to host the latest technology, we got you covered. Visit www.gigalayer.com today. Remember every website needs a good home and Gigalayer is that home with awesome services as sleek as a plate of Nigerian ‘jollof rice served with dodo’. Gigalayer rocks.

By performing regular maintenance, your website is safe from hackers, free from suspension therefore it continues to function properly.
We have shared the 10 important maintenance and updates for WordPress that you should perform regularly on your website and how often you should update and maintain your website. The important updates and maintenance tasks for your website are listed below.
1. Change All Your WordPress Passwords
Having a strong password serves as a strong defence against unauthorised access to your website. You should always use strong unique passwords for all your online accounts including your Cpanel, WordPress website, FTP accounts, and database. A strong password can include letters, numbers, special characters e.t.c. For more details on how to change your Cpanel password, check our knowledge base on how to change your Cpanel password from Cpanel and how to change Cpanel password in the core.

Backups are one of the most important WordPress tools. There are plenty of great WordPress backup plugins that can help you completely automate the WordPress backup process.
3. Check and Update All WordPress Files
You should always use the latest version of WordPress. WordPress comes with a built-in system to manage updates for WordPress core, plugins, and themes. You can also review all your theme and plugin to ensure you have the latest version.
4. Check and Delete Spam Comments
As a WordPress user, Akismet can be used to combat spam messages on your website however, it can also mark some correct messages as spam, so you need to check the spam messages. After checking the spam messages, you can go ahead and delete the spam messages.
5. Optimize Your WordPress Database

This increases your WordPress backup sizes which may affect uploading, downloading, and restoring backups. Optimising your WordPress database allows you to clean up clutter, defragment tables, and improves database performance.

Many users optimise their WordPress performance when they first start and then forget about it. Meanwhile, you keep adding new content, install new plugins, or may even change your theme. All of them may affect the performance of your WordPress site. When reviewing your site’s performance, don’t just limit it to improving your homepage. Also, test your most popular content and all your important pages.
7. Perform a Thorough Content and SEO Audit
Google Analytics helps with an in-depth review of your content. Google Analytics shows you where your visitors are coming from and what they are doing on your website.
8. Optimize Images on Your WordPress Site
All WordPress sites have images and media library. This library contains the images and videos that are on your website. Sometimes these images are too large and increase the loading time of your website. You can perform maintenance check by finding out which of the images can be reduced in size to better optimise the loading speed of your website.
9. Review WordPress Error Logs
Some WordPress users don’t realise that their site is under attack until it stops loading or gets suspended by the hosting provider. In the steps above, we mentioned security measures like changing your password regularly. You can also review your error logs to view any unusual activity on your site.
