Why are women afraid to lose their beauty? There are two perspectives.

One time I read an “article” explaining how women are afraid to lose their beauty because the male gaze is so important to them, that they are afraid to lose their “value” by not being lusted over; The article explains this fear is because of the patriarchal mindset of our society, which convinced women their own value depends on men.

I reflected on the content of this article for a long time and I came to the conclusion that I agree with it and it’s a very smart analysis; however I think it’s missing another perspective.

I thought to myself “am I really doing it for the male gaze?” And maybe I partly am, who knows, but I think a bigger reason I make myself “fancier”with makeup is to have power over some men.

From my perspective, attracting a man means having some kind of control over him and being ugly means losing that certain persuasion power you have over men. That’s possible because men usually rely heavily on looks and often experience attraction without actually getting to know the person they’re pursuing. (This often also applies on women, but I noticed it happens less often.)

Something I also think plays a huge part is confidence. Women wear makeup to feel more confident in themselves and sometimes the male gaze doesn’t even play a part in why women wear makeup. At the end of the end of the day, doing makeup is a very fun activity. 💕
