According to Hindu mythology:
One incense stick is burnt/lit for Vishnu and Lakshmi. In front of Shiva 3 sticks to burn made up of tulsi and other flowers which are not offered to him. Five incense are offered to lord Ganesha and goddess Durga. Six incense is offered to Kartikeya. For family deity or devata to burn 8 incense sticks. Three sticks burn for Ayyappa. Eight incense sticks burn for the goddess Kali.
Burning of one incense indicates the unity that the whole is as one. Lighting of one incense represented Buddha.
Burning of three incense sticks represent the mobility of uneven numbers that tends to infinity, stability and equilibrium. Five sticks burn while worshipping the mother goddess forest for the protection.
For the pardon of wandering soul seven incense can burn.
