One weird thing I've been thinking about lately is the way that, like... In Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, the dialogue doesn't really change whether you're playing as Subaru or Kaguya. And that's completely fine on its own, but it's made kinda weird by the fact that the dialogue, at least to me, mostly only works when Subaru's the one saying it. It makes sense when you consider that Rune Factory only got the ability to play as a woman, from the start, for the entirety of the game, in Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny/Rune Factory 4, depending on how much you wanna nitpick. It's just disappointing that Kaguya feels so... Phoned in.

The reason I'm saying she feels phoned in despite literally having the same dialogue as Subaru is because a lot of the dialogue only comes across as... Well, kosher, if the person delivering the line is a man. A lot of the lines just seem horribly sexist when they're coming from a woman - that one line where the main protagonist is playing marbles with Kurama comes to mind; turning playing marbles into a metaphor for establishing and maintaining a healthy romantic relationship is nauseatingly sappy coming from Subaru, but kind of a. Crime. Coming from Kaguya?

With Subaru, at the very least the extreme emotional intelligence the protagonist has, as well as their nauseating sappiness, impulsivity, and general proclivity for being emotional and seeking emotional solutions to problems, is a subversion. It feels like a genuine collection of character traits. But on Kaguya... It just reads like more misogynistic than anything. Like, yeah, some people really are just like this in real life, and some of those people are women, but... Within the realm of fiction, that layout of traits on a woman is absolutely not new and is almost always just a naked display of the artist's weird ideas of what women are like or should be. These traits are, for me at least, more satisfying and genuine to see on a man, because if you're giving a man all of those traits, I'm going to be inclined to believe you gave his character at least an amount of thought. I'm not inclined to believe the same of the same character as a woman, because almost every damn time these traits are given to women, absolutely zero thought was spared towards the internality of those women.

It really sucks, too - Rune Factory on average has pretty good female characters, but god damn I feel like Kaguya just got done so dirty. The things I would give for her to be a Vriska type...
