Following all the clues to Dirk’s treasure is really neat… but… like… imagine an alternate version where Dirk was never caught and Frances is the one who goes on this scavenger hunt with all her favorite things and Dirk just clomps around following her with a big dopey grin on his face as she solves these clues and both of them are having the most fun of their lives.

Focus groups almost always tell companies something about their products. In 1998, game company Her Interactive established a Teen Advisory Panel to evaluate story ideas, characters, skill levels, and directive statements, among other considerations, for their game Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill. Notes from the Teen Advisory Panel suggested that the favorite game character was Daniel Gray because he was “the nicest and sort-of helped out,” and players considered Aunt Eloise’s House the best in-game location because “that’s where the most clues were.” Comments like these underscore the choices that game designers have to grapple with when they create a play experience.
