Sex and The City by Candace Bushnell an Analysis and Book REVIEW - Part Two
Tumblr media
PART TWO
If you have read this far, I have established by now that the book and TV show are not similar in a lot of notorious ways. Here’s my personalized list of the main differences between the Book and the TV adaptation.
The adaptation of the Character’s Book  into the show
Miranda Hobbes was an Executive in a Cable company. In the TV Show, she was a partner at a Law Firm.
Sarah  was in PR, she liked to party and socialized calling it “work” by meeting the right people aka “making connections” for her business, she liked to date younger men. Sarah is featured much more times than Samantha in the book, and it feels like Sarah’s character is the essence of the Samantha Jones we see on the TV Show. It was Sarah in fact the one that accompanied Carrie and Miranda to that baby shower in Chapter 10: Downtown babes meet Old Greenwich Gals ↔ S1:E10 The Baby Shower
Samantha Jones in the book was a movie producer and seemed like not a close friend of Carrie. Samantha didn’t like Mr. Big, and Mr. Big didn’t like Samantha because he thought she was mean to Carrie. Samantha in the book is the antithesis of the Samantha we love and adore from the TV Show and we get a close glimpse of that in Chapter 22: Bone and the White Mink: Carrie’s Christmas Carol Where she complains about not having a man. Throughout the book, she comes off at times a bit desperate.  Chapter 25: Carrie and the Flowers. Although I can see where the inspiration for her romance with Smith the actor came from, you can find it in the Epilogue of the book.
Charlotte was an English journalist and far more likable in the book, and she had very few paper-screen in the book. On the other hand, Charlotte was one of Carrie’s main 4 friends on the show and she was an art dealer that dreamed of owning her own gallery but she gave all that away to be a stay-at-home mom.
Carrie Bradshaw was the author’s Candace Bushnell alter ego, mostly she didn’t want her conservative parents to read about her sex life.

Ron Gattoli (real life Mr. Big) with actor Cris Noth
Mr. Big’s in the book he is a publisher. In the TV show, his career is rather mysterious more portrayed as he owns a financial company. The inspiration for the character Mr. Big is Ron Gattoli who was dating author Candace (Carrie) at the time.
Tumblr media
Standford Blatch in the book is a movie screenwriter, a male-modelizer as well, and yes gay. In the TV Show, he is a manager, gay, and Jewish. The inspiration for the character Standford is Clifford Streit.

The book has so many chapters where we get conversations with Amalita Amalfi , an NYC socialite, and Skipper Johnson, an entertainment lawyer. Whereas the TV Show only features Amalita once in the first season, and Skipper in a few episodes also in S1 and they are never again to be seen. Skipper was sold to us as the “nice guy” a hopeless romantic constantly being rejected by women and complaining about how women prefer toxic men but somebody should have taught Skipper that just because you don’t beat, rap*e, or abus*e women that doesn’t means your a nice guy, this is the bare minimum we can accept from men to respect us. However, in the book Skipper has double moral standards for women, it was so clear to hear him complain and refer to women as the issue when he rejected and disregarded other women for their physical appearance this is clearly an issue and the reason why Skipper can’t seem to land any luck with women, and until men like Skipper change their programming on how they perceive, objectify and treat women their luck will never change. Want to take a look for yourself:  Ch 12: Skipper and Mr.Marvelous Seek Hot Sex in Southampton Hedges, and excerpt “The White Mink” from Ch 22: Bone and the White Mink Carrie’s Christmas Carol

Amalita Amalfi we get chunks of her personality here and there throughout Candace’s columns/book. But we know enough to know Amalita is an exquisite beauty, that uses her sex appeal to her advantage. In a system that objectifies and perpetuates women’s abuse, why not use it to your advantage? this is the kind of power that Amalita transmit to us through her presence in the book. Also in the book, we get a brief glimpse of her life prior to new york, her poor background, and that she has a daughter and thus a reason to provide. When I read this, it make me empathize with her, her often seeming “shallow” need for status and wealth via dating wealthy men (that seek her only for her looks anyways) made complete sense to me. At the end of the Epilogue of the book, Amalita starts her own consulting business and thus implying that she is making it.  Further demonstrating that the tv show missed this potential storyline to show strong women leading character.  Ch7: The International Crazy Girls

The On-again-Off-again relationship between Mr. Big and Carrie (drama)  In the book the challenges of the relationship between Mr. Big and Carrie are normal, it’s somewhat relatable. I know girlfriends that have experienced similar drama.
In the TV show, the amount of on-and-off drama became unbearable for me- overly exaggerated and toxicly romanticized (I also know girlfriends that have experienced similar drama, so it’s not so farfetched). However, I genuinely despised Carrie for cheating on Aidan with Mr.Big AFTER the man deliberately decided to NOT marry HER and leave to marry a younger girl. Like ma’am he’s just not that into you, please take a hint. Pardon me if I get emotional but think about how many girls that you know go through so many hoops to try to keep a man that does not value them because these girls think that men (like in the movies) will somehow magically realize all that one-sided effort then turn around 180°, clean his act and straighten his life just to keep you; the reality is most men DON’T.
I am not a sucker for the romance in the book either, although it sure is more realistic. His relationship with Carrie is not the best at times he behaves like a womanizer and gaslights Carrie. I liked Carrie in the book, don’t get me wrong she has problems of her own, but she is more relatable. At the end, her insanity breakdown episode is relatable; it’s the toxicity of living a superficial materialistic life, being dazed and confused with yourself, and being in an unhappy relationship, it could’ve happened to anyone. They end up breaking up and he ends up marrying someone else. In the Epilogue, we get a brief glimpse that Carrie is featured in a magazine, publishes her first book, and is happily single. Personally, I would’ve preferred this finale for the TV Show.

📚 Book Recommendation 2.5/5 🌟
2.5 rating stands for wanting to remain neutral. The book does not provide much of an inside or characters development like what we see on the TV show. But as always, I recommend reading the book if it sparks your interest. Personally, It’s my first time reading a book like this, and at times I felt like I was walking down the streets of New York with my New York Observer paper reading Candace’s column. Let’s just treasure her book for what it is; a compilation of essays. It does not have to make sense, and the plot of the book does not have to hold relevancy now. It’s the exposure to elite NYC society and the topics they discuss what can help us analyze and understand our society nowadays.

a little picture of the story I shared on my instagram @dianitalv on how my days look in the making of this review, overall I give myself a 10/10 on all that unsolicited effort. It was fun lol.

In truth, he had never seen the point of cuddling. Cuddling was for great aunts and teddy bears. Cuddling gave him cramp.
He pressed his mouth against the top of her head and thought this must never, ever happen again. - One Day, Chapter 1
