“Hey, what about a date, Friday night, 7.00 PM, restaurant behind the post office?” Elliot said to Lily. Lily said:” sure, is that that sushi place?” “Yeah it is, I was there and it was delicious. “ Elliot was obviously flirting with Lily and she was in the mood for a date. Her last break up was terrible but now she is ready to go out again.
Later that day, Lily is texting to her friend Mary.
Lily: Elliot asked me out.
Mary: I thought he was gay.
Lily: Why would he ask me out if he is gay?
Mary: I don’t know but before you moved here, he dated Jordan but they broke up because Jordan’s parents made him.
Lily: poor Jordan.
Mary: but you aren’t going on a date with a f*g right?
Lily: What on earth does it matter if he’s straight or not.
Mary: I wouldn’t go.
Lily: well, I am going, I am fine with being friends as well.
Mary: so you don’t mind that he’s a f*g?
Lily: no, do you?
Mary: yeah it’s just gross.
Lily: just shut up, I really didn’t expect this if you.
Friday came and it was 6.45 PM. Lily was ready to go when she heard her phone ring. It was Mary. “Are you really going to that f*g?” As soon as Lily heard what Mary said, she hang up and went to her date. She had never been to the sushi place and Elliot seems like a nice guy.
At 6.50, Lily arrived, Elliot was already there. Lily said to him:” hey, you look handsome.” Elliot answered: “ thank you, you look very pretty yourself as well.” “Thank you, I said I had a date with you to a friend and she said that you used to date this guy, what’s that about?” Elliot answered: “ I am bisexual and he used to be my boyfriend but his parents weren’t okay with him being gay so they made him break up. Do you have a problem with that?” Lily was very relieved and answered: “ no not at all, nobody knows why we moved, it was because I was bullied so much about being not straight that I really didn’t want to spend another minute at my old school. I am bi as well, I wasn’t planning on telling you it this soon but now you know it’s better. “ Elliot said: “ yeah it is.” And then Lily said: “ you know Mary, she’s homophobic and I’m not going to hang with her anymore, I thought she was different.

It was in the summer of 1972. We were walking while holding our hands and it felt amazing. No not amazing, it felt like a miracle. We didn’t dare to dream that this would ever happen without being shot or something like that. We had been together for 34 years, we met when we were 19 in 1938. We were married to your grandfathers of course but they knew we were gay. They were the only people who did. We were neighbours and I would sometimes go to Margaret, and sometimes she came to my place. But then, when we were both in our fifties, we heard about this march. We heard about it in the secret gay club. We both went there every week. It wasn’t known by the straights but every week we would have a drink in the basement of an old bar.
On this Tuesday in June we heard about a March or demonstration in London, it was to make sure that the straights, the government and the police would know there are gays in the UK. We didn’t have much information, we just knew that it was on the first of July in London.
So on the last day of June, we packed our stuff together and took the train to London. It took about 2 hours to get there, we stayed at someone’s place, someone from the club knew him, sort of, he never met him before and they only spoke to each other on the phone once. All of us, 35 gays and lesbians, slept in his living room.
In the morning, we woke up very early. We left the house at 7.00 AM and saw London. Margaret and I had not been to London before and then in the afternoon we ended up in this march. We were holding hands and kissing in public and nobody did anything about it. It was just miraculous. It was this huge happening. There were rainbow flags, buttons, and huge signs. I had never seen anything this big in my whole life.
And that, you dear, is this first pride your grandmother and I went to.
(Ps, I am sorry that I didn’t post anything yesterday.)

The first of May, 2003
‘’Finally, she is finally out, I am a mom and you are a dad, we are parents. She’s is such an pretty girl. I’m just so happy.’’ She said, her husband answers:’’ I am so happy she is healthy, she is so beautiful, I am very excited.’’ And then, a few hours later, the new parents left with their daughter Elsie.
The eighteenth of April, 2006
Mom: hey Elsie, do you know what a birthday is?
Elsie: no no, you tell me!!!
Dad: it’s when there is a big party because you where born on that day but then years earlier. And the greatest part is that all your family and friends are coming over to eat pie and they give you presents.
Elsie: cool cool cool!!!
Mom: and your dad and I want to know what presents you want?
Elsie: I want the same electronic car as stevie at school!!!
Dad: oh, don’t you like a real life barbie?
Elsie: noooooo, I don’t want a stupid barbie.
Mom: what about a doll house?
Elsie: noooo I just want the car.
The first of May, 2006
6.00 AM:
Elsie: It’s my birthday, it’s my birthday, it’s my birthday, it’s my birthday
Mom (in bed): oh great, she’s up.
Dad (also in bed): I just want to sleep.
Elsie: mom, dad!!! It’s my birthday, when are stevie and Jamie coming?!?
Mom (to dad): should we tell her that they are not coming until 11 AM?
Dad (to mom): will you, please?
Mom: Elsie, honey, your friends are coming in a few hours. How about we go check your presents.
Elsie: yeah, my car and football!!!
Dad: let’s look!
Elsie is yelling all around the house: ‘’ dad look, the presents are soooo big!!!!’’ Then she starts ripping off the paper. She is so excited. But then the happy face with a big smile changed really quick into a disappointed face.
She didn’t saw a cool car or a American football like she wished for. She saw a doll house. He first thing she said was: ‘’ I am going to paint this blue and put all my cars in it, it’ll be like a big garage.
11 AM:
Stevie: Elsie, Elsie!!!! Jamie and I are here.
Jamie: what you get?
Elsie: I’m commmmmiiinnnnggggg!!!!
Jamie at the door: hi!
Elsie: hey guys. I got a doll house, stupid but I’ll paint it blue and then I’ll put my cars in it.
Stevie: wow, that’s a great idea.
Jamie: we got you presents.
Elsie: coool
Stevie: it are hot wheels!
Jamie: YOU STUPID, SHE HAS TO FOUND THAT OUT HERSELF!!
Elsie: hot wheels are so cool. Let’s go paint so we can put them in the garage.
MOMMMMMMM!!!! Where is the paint? Stevie and Jamie and I are going to paint.
Mom: in the closet, on the lowest shelf.
Elsie: I’ll get them.
Mom: will you paint in the backyard? I don’t want my house to get painted.
Elsie: jahaaaaaaa
Stevie: let’s paint.
After 30 minutes the doll house was lost, it was a garage now.
Jamie: it looks very cool. Let’s put the hot wheels in it.
Stevie: we need to wait first because it has to dry. We don’t need the cars to get all sticky with paint.
Eleventh of April, 2014
Dinner table:
Dad: hey els, what do you want for your birthday this year?
Elsie: I really want this miniature model of the old Volkswagen t1. I saw this advertisement online, it’s very near by. I will show you, come to the computer.
Mom: hey honey, don’t you want a normal present for once like other normal girls. Maybe some make-up or something?
And then, right after she said it, Elsie walks to the computer, searches the VW T1 and goes upstairs without a saying a single word.
Dad to mom: did you really had to bring it up again. If she wants a car, she’ll get that car. I don’t want the disaster of her third birthday to happen again.
Elsie from upstairs: it’s a van not a car.
Dad: sure smarty, I’m trying to safe your birthday here.
Mom to dad: it’s just not normal, all I wanted for my eleventh birthday was a mascara.
Dad to mom: she isn’t like you, just move on, she doesn’t want mascara.
The first of May, 2014
Dad says: ‘’ we love you so much so we got 2 presents for you.’’ Then he says to Elsie very softly, your mom and I also wanted to give you different gifts, I hope you like them.
Elsie: yeah yeah whatever, let’s just get the presents.
Mom: they are in the kitchen!
Then Elsie opens the smaller present first, it’s some lipgloss or something. Elsie said: ‘’ I wonder who bought that...’’ Then she opens the other gift. Which is the VW T1. And she yells: ‘’ thank you so much dad!!! I love it.’’
The seventh of August, 2018
Elsie yells: ‘’ Mom, dad!! Can you get down, I want to talk to you about something’’ after a few minutes everyone is sitting in the couch. Elsie starts talking:’’ I want to talk to you about something serious. You know how I always wanted cars and stuff like that for my birthday and never wanted to wear pink or a dress. I am a boy but I just don’t have a penis.’’ Mom:
‘’Language!’’ Dad: that’s okay, have you come up with a new name yet or do want us to say the name we would have called you if we knew you were a boy at your birth?’’ His wife says: ‘’ what the hell John, Elsie is a girl and she has always been a girl and she always will be.’’ John answers: ‘’ serious, when he was three years old, he painted the doll house we got him and put his hot wheels in it. He is a boy and if you can’t accept my son, you can get out of my house right now’’ She stood up and left. ‘’ I want to know the name you got me’’ ‘’okay, it’s Billy.’’ I like that. They shake hands and while doing that he said: ‘’ hi, I’m Billy.’’ His dad answers, hey Billy. You wanna grap something at the Mac, I’m hungry.

We were sitting at the back of the school bus. We have been sitting at the back of the school bus all year. On the school bus is the only time we can be together. We can’t hang out at my place because of my mom. We can’t hang out at his place because of his dad, who is also homophobic, we can’t stay longer at school because we can’t miss our bus so the only time we can be together is at the bus.
Isaac said: ‘’ Tomorrow night we have a football match, are you going to be there?’’ I of course said that I would come. The smile on his face was worth a million bucks. He has such a great smile. Isaac continued: ‘’ You know I have the best boyfriend ever, right?’’ Then something wonderful happened. He kissed me on my cheek in public. That had never happened before. I felt like I was in the clouds.
What happened next, was just the awakening. From a perfect dream to real life, which is more like a nightmare. Some girls began calling us faggots and said that we better die today then tomorrow. It happens every day but it hurts, it always hurts.
Every night I dream about a better world. It’s basically the same but people don’t care about your gender and sexuality and homophobia doesn’t exist and the weather is better. There is this wedding and I hear: ‘’ Do you, Isaac Smith, take Thomas Jones to be your husband’’ That means I can get married. That’s my dream, I just can’t understand why I can’t get married but my sister can.
