it’s telling, I think, that it’s the feeling of her babies inside her that stirs such fear in Katniss, and I have always read that as her knowing how vulnerable pregnancy can be; when her children are born, she expresses this sense of joy and relief; of course it’s multifaceted, and I know she worries about them plenty before and after she carries and delivers them (see again: Katniss and Peeta’s feelings about the fake baby), but once again, it’s not that her children are what she fears: it’s the possibility of losing them (or even of hurting them, given how she frets about frightening them with her story)
but this is what I love about their son: because if they determined that the stress on Katniss was too much with the baby girl, they wouldn’t have had another; it’s so silly to think Peeta nagged Katniss into not one, but two children; she faced that primal fear and still had another child; they had those babies because they were free to want them; as I said before, the children don’t represent fulfillment or a need (Katniss and Peeta would have been fulfilled without them); they represent freedom to want

A lot of older Hayffie fics I've read present Haymitch as being older than Effie. And that's fine, but...
"Older sister who's slightly older than Haymitch" works so well. Like, of course she's a little older. She's the responsible one, the one who takes care of her Victors, and I just...

Haymitch: How come you never had kids? I know you love them!
Effie: Turns out I am infertile...
Haymitch:....
Effie: What?
Haymitch: Is that a challenge?
Effie: ....a challenge?
Haymitch: *starts unbuttoning shirt*
Effie: 😮
Haymitch: I bet 20 bucks I can get it done by next spring

Effie: HAYMITCH ABERNATHY! IF I FIND YOUR SOCKS ON THE BATHROOM FLOOR I SWEAR I'M GOING TO KILL YOU
Friend: .......
Callie: What?
Haymitch: THAT'S ALRIGHT, PRINCESS. YOU ARE ALREADY KILLING ME
Friend: Are your parents ok?
Callie: Yeah? Why do you ask?
Friend: My parents used to do that before they got divorced...
Callie: Really?
Friend: yeah
Callie: Huh odd. Last time they did this I got a baby brother...

So the victory tour is in the winter and Burdock Everdeen died in january.
Do we think Haymitch was in the Capitol when he found out? Obviously 12 didn't win that year, I just assume all the mentors are dragged to the Capitol to celebrate the end of the tour.
Yeah I'm going to say he was
He got drunk
And Effie held him as he cried on the bathroom floor

Katniss: We need salt
Haymitch: Noted (writes it down)
Peeta: If they have avocados buy that as well
Haymitch: Alright. Do you need anything, Princess? Already wrote down sanatairy products
Effie: Actually I think I don't need it anymore. I think I have started menopause
Peeta:...
Haymitch: Do you need anything to help with that?
Effie: Dry cookies. Some chocolate. Pickles maybe?
Katniss: .....
Haymitch: Alright, Princess. I guess we don't need the condoms anymore then (strikes condoms off list)
Katniss: Ew
Peeta: Are you sure you wore them in the first place?

going crazy over this scene because:
haymitch wanted a HUG… clearly he feels comfortable being vulnerable with effie to some extent, but in this scene A) he is extremely drunk and B) this is very much the wrong place, wrong time. i wonder if he ever attempts to give effie a hug when he’s sober. i wonder if effie would accept that hug if he wasn’t drunk and/or they weren’t onstage. :(((
what were previous years like? did he often create scenes like this one (i.e., yelling incoherently and passing out)? we know that effie tried to take care of haymitch, at least initially. however, effie does not seem like the kind of person to take being the “laughingstock” of the nation lightly. i’m sure that resentment and affection built up in tandem over the course of 25 years. i would kill to read this moment from effie’s pov.
all that being said: katniss. girl. you do not hold the same job for 25 years if you are eager to leave it for something better. clearly effie is getting something out of this. she just happens to be insane in ways you don’t recognize yet.
anyways. rereading this book after sotr is fun!

Headcanon #4
Effie goes more and more natural post-war. What makes her finally quit the Capitol beauty standards is when Haymitch and Effie's daughter is born.
"How can I tell my daughter she is perfect as she is while I cover my face in make-up and wigs to the point where I'm not recognizable".

I have a headcanon that Effie rides back to District 12 every year to make sure that the current round of fallen tributes make it home safely. It bothered her that Haymitch had to do it himself. They were her responsibility as much as his and she couldn't bear the thought of riding hundreds of miles alone with the dead so close.
It wasn't a requirement of the job and none of the other escorts did it. Haymitch rarely spoke to her on those train rides back to District 12. She never did anything special or even got off the train at the station but it felt like abandoning Haymitch and the tributes if she didn't.
