writing prompt: anything involving tony from earthbound~?
You ask, and you shall receive!
Tony looks all around at his surroundings as he walks through the halls of the Snow Wood Boarding House for the very first time. The place is so big, and he's definitely very small, especially considering he's only eight. Taking a breath, he mentally repeats the reassuring words his parents gave him before he headed out.
It'll be a big adventure, Tony! You'll learn new things, make new friends, and before you know it, the school year will be over, and you'll be right back home! Still, Tony can't help but feel a little tense.
Walking next to Tony is a teacher, one whom Tony has elected to mentally dub Mr. Teacher, since he wasn't able to quite catch his name and doesn't want to be rude by asking for it again. Mr. Teacher is helping Tony drag his luggage to his room, which is full of clothes, school supplies, and various keepsakes he refused to leave home without. The only keepsake not in the suitcase is Tony's beloved hat, which he is currently wearing, of course, and never leaves home without.
"Are you excited to meet your roommate, lad?" Mr. Teacher asks.
"Ye-e-s. I think," Tony replies. In truth, he's not sure what to expect. He's never had a roommate before; he's never even had to share his room with anyone! The room... What will that be like? Will it be big, or will it be small? Will he have his own closet and/or set of drawers, or will he have to share with his roommate, whoever that'll be? Will they have their own bathroom so they can take care of their business in the middle of the night without bothering anyone else? Will Tony have to share a bunk bed with his roommate? Tony lingers on that last thought. He hopes that won't be the case; if it is, then he certainly hopes his roommate will take the top bunk, because Tony doesn't like heights.
"Ex-cuse me, but... There won't be any bunk beds in my room, will there?" he asks. Mr. Teacher laughs.
"Of course not," he replies. "You and your roommate will each have your own bed, completely unconnected."
Tony lets out a breath of relief. If he can avoid having to worry about bunk beds or anything of the sort, he's pretty sure he'll be able to handle going here.
"I hope you understand that you won't be sharing any classes with your roommate." Mr. Teacher says, breaking Tony out of his thoughts once again, "He's your age, but in a different year."
"Oh," Tony says intelligently. What does he mean by a different year? He wonders if his roommate has been held back... He hopes the classwork won't be too difficult, especially if he has to help his roommate with his.
Tony and Mr. Teacher finally stop at one of the doors, reading 334B in a neat little font. "Here we are," says Mr. Teacher. "You'll be staying in here." He knocks on the door before opening it shortly thereafter.
True to Mr. Teacher's words, there are two separate beds in the room, although neither of them are neat in the slightest. One has obviously been slept in and perhaps has never been properly made; meanwhile, the other is properly made, but it's hard to see through the books and tools that the bed is being used to hold. Amidst the sea of tools, papers, books, and half-finished projects that make up the floor, there is an equally cluttered desk. And at this desk, sitting in a wooden chair, is a boy about Tony's age, with straight blond hair and a pair of square-framed glasses on his freckled face. In his hand is a well-used screwdriver, and he looks up from his project much like a previously grazing deer that's just heard a twig snap, though it doesn't look like he's about to run away.
"Come over here, then! This is your new roommate." Mr. Teacher says, waving for the boy to come over.
"Oh," the boy says almost blandly. He quietly sets his project down, adjusts his glasses, and steps around the mess in order to get to Tony and Mr. Teacher.
"This is Anthony Heartwright," Mr. Teacher says. Tony scrunches up his nose at being called Anthony, but he doesn't say anything about it this time. "Anthony, this is your roommate, Jeffery Andonuts."
"Jeff," the boy corrects in a blunt sort of way.
"Ah, yes, of course. Jeff." Mr. Teacher says, clearing his throat as he sets Tony's suitcase down, "Jeff, how about you help Anthony unpack, maybe clear up a walking path and get that clutter off the bed? Those books of yours could go on that perfectly good shelf over there." He gestures to a bookshelf that, unlike the rest of the room, has absolutely nothing on it, except for the likelihood of dust.
"Okay," Jeff says with a nod.
Mr. Teacher leaves, shutting the door behind him, meaning that Tony and Jeff are alone in the room. There's a silence, and Tony tries to get an idea of Jeff just by looking at him, but it proves to be a difficult task. For starters, he's not even making eye contact, even when Tony tries!
Despite this, Tony and Jeff are able to work together to clear up some room for Tony and his things. Tony's clothes are hung up and folded away, his books are placed on the shelves, and his keepsakes are placed near his bed, which is no longer a makeshift books-and-tools holder. The room is still messy, but at least it's livable now.
Jeff, who hasn't said a word the whole time, quietly returns to the desk and starts working on his project once again. Tony nearly steps on a blueprint that they somehow missed, so he picks it up so he can put it with the others. On this blueprint, Tony realizes, is a crude drawing of some kind of robot. Judging by all of the tools and gadgets lying around, Tony quickly realizes that Jeff is in one of the years ahead of him, not behind.
"Have you made a robot before?" Tony asks, approaching Jeff with the blueprint.
"...No, not yet." Jeff replies finally, still not looking Tony in the face, "But I'd li-li-li.... I'd li... I-I-I'd like t-t-t-t-t..." He stops to furrow his brow in frustration before taking a breath and starting over. "But I'd like to someday, m-maybe."
"Have you tried?" Tony asks, electing to just set the blueprint down on the desk.
Jeff nods. "Yea, but it, um, um, um... I-i-it never works the way I... the... the way I... the way I want them to."
Tony looks all around at the blueprints, seeing all kinds of designs for all kinds of gadgets and gizmos. "I guess you like making things, huh? You're like an inventor."
"Uh-huh," Jeff says eloquently as he returns to focusing on his project. Shortly, though, he stops and sets his screwdriver down, although it seems to be because he's finished using it. "D-d'you like robots, An-An-An-An-Anthony?"
"Eehhhh, just Tony, please." Tony says with a grimace, "I don't like being called Anthony, thanks."
"Oh, okay." Jeff nods, "I don't like be-be-being called Jeffery. It's just Jeff."
"Ah, right, but to answer your question: I think robots are kind of neat, if that's what you mean." Tony finishes, fidgeting with his blazer. He hums. "What are you making right now?"
"Oh, it's, um... It's an, uh... An... An..." Either Jeff's voice drops to a mutter, or he simply stops talking, because Tony can't hear him. Still, Tony tries to make sure Jeff knows he's listening. Jeff seems to notice this, and a tiny smile forms on his face. "We-e-e-ell, it's... It's supposed to be like a space heater, bu-but it'll heat an even bigger space with... while also being easier to lug around."
"Wow!" Tony grins, "That sounds brilliant! I don't know much of anything about inventing, but do you think I could try to help out?"
"Sure, I guess, if you want..." Jeff replies.
He accidentally knocks his screwdriver off the desk, and he bends over to pick it up, but Tony beats him to it. Tony grabs the screwdriver, stands upright again, and holds it out for Jeff to take.
"You know, I think I'm gonna like being friends with you," he says with a broad smile. "Or, at least roommates."
Jeff blinks at the screwdriver in Tony's hand. Then he looks up at Tony's face, then back at the screwdriver. He takes the screwdriver before looking back up at Tony. Another smile forms on his face, this one bigger and bucktoothed.
"Yea, m-me too."
