A Glimpse into 1960s Elegance: The Givenchy Boutique Brocade Dress Set
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This beautiful brocade Givenchy dress set from the 1960s is a true testament to the timeless elegance of the Givenchy Boutique line. Launched in 1952 alongside the opening of the couture house, the Boutique line was initially designed as a demi-couture ready-to-wear collection aimed at younger clients. However, by the late 1950s, Givenchy’s Boutique line began featuring more accessible versions of successful couture models, all crafted in less expensive fabrics while maintaining the high-quality craftsmanship of demi-couture. While these pieces weren’t quite as exclusive as haute couture, they still carried the same level of sophistication and elegance, bringing the essence of Givenchy to a broader audience.
As I admire this exquisite brocade dress set, I am reminded of the many pieces in Givenchy’s collections worn by Audrey Hepburn. Audrey, another iconic muse of the brand, was often seen in Givenchy’s brocade creations, especially at the premieres of My Fair Lady. These dresses were known for their intricate, woven patterns, which lent an air of luxury and grace to every occasion. I’ve added some photos of these stunning brocade Givenchy pieces worn by Hepburn at various premieres, as well as some 1960s brocade designs from the Met, showcasing the rich history and craftsmanship of the brand during this period.

My 1971 Givenchy Coat
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ever wondered what old black and white couture pieces looked like in real life? Here is an original 1971 Givenchy couture coat. With beautiful hues of pink, navy blue, cream, and red. I paired it with a navy blue 60’s Givenchy dress. I’ve added photos from other Givenchy lines of similar design, including one worn by Audrey Hepburn in promotional pics for How to Steal A Million. As well as old newspaper clippings with Givenchy ads for their plaid couture.
This particular coat has an interesting story behind it, originally owned by Margaret Case, a well known editor of Vogue for nearly 50 years. I’ve included a photo of her wearing this exact coat as well as a letter written by the person behind the camera, the famous Hollywood photographer, Horst P. Horst. Who ironically, had also photographed Hepburn. The letter reads, “This photo of Margaret was taken - spring 1971 on her
last visit to Oyster Bay. / It was good of you to call ... / It cheered
me up no end. / Many thanks and a Happy New Year.”
Signed: “Horst”
Case lived at 535 Park Avenue up until her tragic death after having been fired from Vogue. #1960sgivenchy #audreyhepburn #givenchycouture

A 1963 Givenchy purse owned by Audrey Hepburn and used in her 1964 film Paris When It Sizzles. I recently acquired the hot pink version, Hepburn’s was a sand/cream color. Both very rare. You can see the purse in the clip of Hepburn hitting William Holden in the face with it from the 1964 film.
