India may host NBA pre-season game in Mumbai next year: NBA chief Adam Silver
By Saumojyoti S Choudhury
PTI  (10:21 AM)
In what could be a major boost for basketball in India, the country may host a pre-season NBA game in Mumbai next year, said the league's Commissioner Adam Silver. To promote the game in India, NBA in May 2017 had launched The NBA Academy, an elite basketball training center at Jaypee Greens Integrated Sports Complex in Greater Noida. NBA's initiative has been yielding desired results as 20 odd boys and girls from New Delhi and Bengaluru have represented India in the just-concluded Jr NBA World Championships that concluded here last night. "We had India represented here. We have an academy on the ground now. We are potentially looking to play a game in Mumbai, may be next year. It would be a pre-season game," Silver told PTI on the sidelines of the Jr NBA World Championships. "If we do a pre-season game, we can build time and our players and their families can spend time, learn about the country's culture, he said. The NBA chief said the organisation is determined to break the barriers in India by collaborating with the Reliance Foundation. "We are very focused on the Indian market. We have a great relationship with Reliance and Mukesh Ambani and he and his wife's foundation. There is enormous amount of grass root basketball being played in India, Silver said. Silver was full of praise for the talent in show at the World Championships and said the event is their endeavour to create future basketball stars. "It's hard to define. I would say it's a fantastic first tour. We had 10000 participants from 70 countries which went through the process to be a part here. Just seeing the enthusiasm you can feel what it means to them. They have been here for a week, participated in community projects. "They were taught life skills, how to deal with stress. I think this is just the beginning of what will turn out to be a great program, he said. "We see this as an opportunity at a global level to putting in infrastructure. For young players just the dream of coming to the United States, that too at Disney is incredible. We believe we really can do something special with this program. The NBA Commissioner termed the Jr NBA World Chamionships as a future investment for the organization. "This is certainly not a business. I think for us it's an investment in the game and in future league players. It's an investment in teaching young people life skills and appreciation for what the NBA and WNBA stand for, Silver concluded. Meanwhile, USA continued its domination in the sport with the US Central girls team and US Central boys team winning the inaugural Junior World Championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Central girls defeated Europe girls team 68-38, while the Central boys beat Africa & Middle East boys 60-50. Four awards, representing the Jr NBA's four core values Determination, Respect, Teamwork and Community were each presented to the boy and girl players who best represented the characteristics throughout the tournament. India did not return empty-handed from the event as Sunishka Kartik bagged the Community Award among the girls.

Biopics we'd want to watch, instead of 'Sanju'
Source: Scoopwhoop
India has put out some stellar personalities - brave, creative and brilliant. It'd be great to see biopics made on these people as well.
1. Yogendra Singh Yadav
This army man received the Param Vir Chakra at age 19, making him the youngest person to receive the honour. He was lauded for his efforts during the 1999 Kargil War, where he was hit by 14 bullets, but still managed to capture Tiger Hill and neutralise 8 enemy soldiers.
2. Salman Rushdie
A well made film on the life of this prolific writer would be truly engrossing, not least because he had to go into exile after the Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for his assassination.
3. Bhaichung Bhutia
The torchbearer of Indian football didn't exactly have an easy start. His parents were farmers, and while he was athletic from a young age, they weren't too keen on him pursuing sports. His father passed away when he was very young though, after which he received a football scholarship at the age of 9, and that's how it all began.
4. Gauri Lankesh
The slain journalist's case is still going on, and what she stood for lives on as well. She was the editor of Lankesh Patrike, a Kannada weekly that stood for a free press and challenged the fascism of the right wing. She was shot and killed for her views, allegedly by members of an extremist Hindu group.
5. Jadav 'Molai' Payeng
The 'Forest Man of India' pulled off a veritable miracle in Assam all on his own. In 1979, at the age of 16, Molai started planting seeds on a tree-less sandbar in Jorhat. He continued this over several decades, turning the area into a lush 1360 acre forest reserve known as The Molai Forest.
6. Satyajit Ray
The big daddy of Indian cinema has, strangely enough, not had a movie made on his own life. His father passed when he was three, and the family actually grew up in dire financial straits. To see his journey from a child in time to the country's most illustrious filmmaker would truly be a pleasure.
7. Mehmood
The iconic comedian and all round entertainer actually worked as a driver before he found his way into films. He held several odd jobs, and only started acting properly after he got married and needed to make more money.
8. P. V. Sindhu
The first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal - what else do you need for a movie? How about the fact that she won a silver in Women's singles at the Commonwealth Games 2018, or that she broke into the top 20 of the BWF World Ranking at the young age of 17? The movie pretty much writes itself.
9. Nawazuddin Siddiqui
He spent years working as a chemist and even as a watchman, before managing to get into the prestigious National School of Drama, even acting in 10 plays to fulfill certain criteria. He's a world class actor, and he did it all on his ownsome.
10. Arundhati Roy
Roy isn't just a brilliant writer, she's also been a visible social activist, weighing in on issues ranging from human rights to the environment. A deeper look into the process of a person of such substance is always welcome.
11. Khushwant Singh
The man, the myth, the whiskey swigging legend - who wouldn't want to see a movie on Khushwant Singh? His life, Partition et al, was as much a story as his books.
12. Sushil Kumar
This freestyle wrestler is the only Indian to win 2 individual Olympic medals. But his life leading up to these wins was one of struggle - his family couldn't afford to get both him and his brother trained, so his brother had to stop wrestling. They also had very minimal funds, so he couldn't afford dietary supplements.
13. Ravi Shankar
The renowned sitar player had a life as eventful as his music. Some good, some bad, but all interesting and full of colour. You can't have a movie about a staid old fogey now, can you?
14. Barun Biswas
This Bengali school teacher and social activist in Sutia, West Bengal, organised a concerted fight against a local gang that was using rapes to terrorise the people of his village. He managed to get them arrested, but was shot later by certain members of the gang who got bail. A fearless hero. While a Bengali film was made about the incident, it was more of a fictionalised account than a biopic of his life.
15. Satyendra Nath Bose
This Indian physicist, born in 1894, worked with Albert Einstein to provide the foundation for Bose–Einstein statistics and the theory of the Bose–Einstein condensate, at a time when it was extremely difficult for Indians to achieve this level of success. He received the Padma Vibhushan for his work in physics, but his interests lay in everything from mineralogy to music.

Human lifespan has no fixed limit, say scientists
IANS (16:10)
New York, June 29 (IANS) There is no fixed limit to the human lifespan, say scientists who found that the chances to be a supercentenarian -- to live up to and above the age of 110 -- are high for people who survive the perilous 90s, and make it to 105. The findings showed that the chances of survival for the longevity warriors plateaued once they made it past 105, challenging previous research that claims the human lifespan has a final cut-off point. People between the ages of 105 and 109, known as semi-supercentenarians, had a 50/50 chance of dying within the year and an expected further lifespan of 1.5 years. That life expectancy rate was projected to be the same for 110-year-olds, or supercentenarians, hence the plateau. "Our data tell us that there is no fixed limit to the human lifespan yet in sight," said Kenneth Wachter, Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. "Not only do we see mortality rates that stop getting worse with age, we see them getting slightly better over time," he added. To date, the oldest human on record, Jeanne Calment of France, died in 1997 at age 122 years and 164 days. According to researchers, those who survive, do so because of demographic selection and/or natural selection. Frail people tend to die earlier while robust people, or those who are genetically blessed, can live to extreme ages, they noted. For the study, published in the journal Science, the team tracked the death rate of 3,836 Italians -- who were aged 105 and older between 2009 and 2015. The result showed that Italian women born in 1904 who reached age 90 had a 15 per cent chance of dying within the next year, and six years, on average, to live. If they made it to 95, their odds of dying within a year increased to 24 percent and their life expectancy from that point on dropped to 3.7 years.

June is the best time to enjoy for adventure lovers and they can enjoy the different water sports like jet skiing, water skiing, paragliding, scuba diving. Also, the beginners training for scuba diving can best learn in these months. * Affordable accommodation: October-January are the months when the tourist traction is huge for beach areas, but from June-September the areas are less occupied and you don't have to spend much on travel and stay. Fares are affordable for luxury resorts and you can book your fairies and adventures at a low cost.

The ICC Integrity App will give anyone in the game easy access to information they need to tackle issues relating to anti-corruption and anti-doping. The app is designed with the needs of players, officials and team support staff at all levels of the game and across all formats. It ensures participants are equipped with the information required to ensure the game remains clean and their careers do not suffer due to lack of knowledge. The app will provide them with essential information and a secure platform to report any suspicious incidents or behaviour related to corruption or doping. The app was received well by players and officials after a soft launch at this year's ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and will continue to be developed with more features, content and functionality such as videos and imagery to be added in the coming months and years. Commenting on the app, ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said: "The ICC is committed to protecting the spirit of the game and this app will play a huge part in helping us in our objective. Two films releasing on same day can survive: John Abraham
IANS (20:22)
Mumbai, June 28 (IANS) Bollywood actor John Abraham, whose upcoming film "Satyamev Jayate" is releasing on August 15 along with Akshay Kumar's "Gold", says the date clash is not a problem. During the trailer launch of "Satyamev Jayate" here on Thursday, John was asked if a release date clash can create a problem for the business of his film, and to his relations with Akshay. John said: "Akshay is a friend. I wish him best. I think two films can release on the same day and survive. There are enough screens for both the films." "Satyamev Jayate" director Milap Zaveri added: "I wish 'Gold' all the best and how many ever films are coming on that day... May all the films do great business at the box office, and be appreciated by people." Both the movies exude a patriotic fervour, in sync with the Independence Day mood. Since the last few films of both the actors are in the patriotic space, asked if there is a competition of sorts between Akshay and him, John said: "I choose films depending on the kind of scripts I like. When I made 'Parmanu - The Story of Pokhran', I liked the story, and so I enjoyed the process of making it. "(As an audience) I enjoy watching a commercial film which is why I am doing this film." After "Satyamev Jayate", he will be seen in "RAW", followed by "Batla House". "I think each actor is entitled to choose a certain script at a certain point of time. Even Akshay is doing a comedy after that film ('Gold'), so we all are doing different work," he added. The trailer launch also saw the presence of Manoj Bajpayee, Aisha Sharma and Amruta Khanvilkar. As the title of the film suggests the triumph of truth, John says telling the truth is the toughest but most important thing in life. "I think telling the truth is the toughest thing in the world and it is important too. I think whenever you tell the truth; a lot of loads is taken off your chest," said John.

Grammy expands top category nominations
IANS (18:02)
Los Angeles, June 27 (IANS) The Recording Academy, among several changes in its awards process, has increased the number of nominations for its top categories -- Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist -- from five to eight. According to variety.com, the announcement was sent to Academy members on Tuesday. "This change will better reflect the large number of entries in these categories and allow voters greater flexibility when selecting this year's best recordings," the announcement read. The decision is likely to have been a reflection of the uproar over the low number of female nominees and winners for the 2018 awards, even though those nominations were possibly musically and racially diverse with Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, Childish Gambino, Khalid, SZA, Jay-Z's producer No I.D. leading the pack. However, the winners' list did not reflect the wider variety of nominees as Mars swept Best Album, Song and Record - and in some categories, it seems likely that votes were split between rappers Jay-Z and Lamar. Sony/ATV Music Publishing chairman Martin Bandier told Variety: "I think the expansion of the nominations is a great thing. There is such a wide diversity of music today and narrowing it down to only five in a major category is not inclusive enough. "This is much better for the industry and I'm happy to see this change. It gives more talented people a shot and gives voters a bigger spectrum to choose from. I predict there will be some very interesting events as a result." In other changes, music supervisors will be considered nominees in the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album category. They will no longer be eligible for consideration as album producers unless they produced at least 51 percent of the album in question. Among other category definition updates and clarifications, the Recording Academy stated that the nominations for the World Music Field will now be determined through its own Nominations Review Committee.

Dia Mirza buys iconic 'Mother India' poster for Sanjay Dutt
IANS (13:40)
Mumbai, June 27 (IANS) Dia Mirza bid for and bought an original six-sheet poster of the landmark film "Mother India" -- depicting the iconic Nargis Dutt -- for Rs 145,000 in an auction. The actress, who features in a pivotal role in "Sanju", a movie on Sanjay Dutt's life, wants to gift it to the "Munna Bhai M.B.B.S." star. Dia bid for the poster at Osian's IIFA Auction at the recently concluded International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards in Bangkok. The poster of the 1957 movie "Mother India" was much in demand but the winning bid of Rs 145,000 came from the UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador Dia, known as much for her community services and activism as for her acting in cinema. She mentioned that she was buying the iconic poster and would like to offer it as a gift to Sanjay, read a statement. In "Sanju", a Rajkumar Hirani directorial, Dia essays the role of Maanyata Dutt, Sanjay's current wife, opposite Ranbir Kapoor. The Osian's and IIFA collaboration saw the film fraternity put its weight firmly behind preserving and nurturing of India's rich cinematic culture and its fragile paper-based heritage. The auction saw Neville Tuli, Chairman of Osian's Group, give vital insights into the need for preserving film memorabilia. An exhibition was on view for a-day-and-a-half prior to the auction that saw much competition for most of the 109 lots that went under the hammer. Actor Anil Kapoor got his hands on the iconic first release three-sheet poster of "Mughal-e-Azam" for Rs 210,000. Anupam Kher made successful bids for the re-release half-sheet poster of "Bandini" for Rs 26,000, and a rare poster of "Kabuliwala" for Rs 34,000. This was the first public auction in which this rare version of Bimal Roy's 1961 "Kabuliwala" poster came up for sale. Neville Tuli reiterates: "The auction was a major step forward in persuading the Indian film fraternity regarding a shared responsibility towards nurturing our cinematic culture and preserving the rare and fragile cinematic heritage. Stars such as Anupam Kher, Anil Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Bobby Deol, all contributed with a genuine love and commitment towards this long and shared journey. "Hopefully with the opening of the Osianama Research Center, Archives and Library on October 1, the unity of the film fraternity towards this cause will be evident to the whole world."

We should take tips from Neha Kakkar: Dadlani
IANS (14:40)
Mumbai, June 27 (IANS) Singer-composer Vishal Dadlani is all praise for his "Indian Idol" co-judge Neha Kakkar. He is so impressed with the former contestant of the singing-based show that he is willing to take tips from her. Neha, now a successful singer, had competed on the show in 2006. "Neha's story is incredible. From being a contestant to becoming a judge on the same show is truly a remarkable feat," Dadlani said in a statement. "It has happened for the first time in the world on a talent show. Also, from the three-member panel, Neha as a judge would be able to see the contestants' perspective a lot clearer than us. "I have never been a contestant on any television show. I have been a part of multiple college competitions and that's a very different thing than being a part of a TV show." To be a contestant on a reality show, Dadlani feels it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. "Neha has been there. She is also very empathetic towards each singer. I also feel that she is made for the camera. Neha is unbelievable in front of the camera. We should be taking tips from her," he said. "Indian Idol" is in its 10th season this year. It will premiere on Sony Entertainment Television on July 7.

How piano lessons can improve your child's language skills
IANS (19:02)
New York, June 26 (IANS) If your kid is slow in language skills, then sending him or her for piano lessons can improve word discrimination as well as language proficiency, says a study. The findings suggested that piano lessons may have a specific effect on the children's ability to distinguish different pitches, which helped them to better distinguish different words. However it did not appear to confer any benefit for overall cognitive ability, as measured by IQ, attention span, and working memory, the researchers said. "The children didn't differ in the more broad cognitive measures, but they did show some improvements in word discrimination, particularly for consonants. The piano group showed the best improvement there," said Robert Desimone from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, included data from nearly 100 children aged four or five years, who were divided into three groups -- one that received 45-minute piano lessons three times a week; one that received extra reading instruction for the same period of time; and one that received neither intervention. After six months, the researchers tested the children on their ability to discriminate words based on differences in vowels, consonants, or tone. The results showed that children who had piano lessons showed a significant advantage over children in the extra reading group in discriminating between words that differ by one consonant. Children in both the piano group and extra reading group performed better than children who received neither intervention when it came to discriminating words based on vowel differences. "That's a big thing for kids in learning language being able to hear the differences between words. They really did benefit from that," Desimone added. The researchers hope their findings could encourage other schools to keep or enhance their music offerings.

Tips to keep your hunger pangs in check
IANS (19:12)
New Delhi, June 25 (IANS) Maintain a routine when it comes to your diet, and get proper sleep to keep hunger pangs at bay, say, experts. Prashanth Badrinarayan, Chief Scientist at Happy Ratio, says a balanced diet, when realised to its full potential, can do wonders for the body. Some of his tips to curb your hunger pangs are: * Have a balanced meal with the right amount of fibre and protein. There are two significant nutrients that help you fill up. Lean protein, vegetables, fruits and whole grains with their low-calorie content help reap antioxidants and amino acids while slowing down digestion. * Consume a meal with low-glycemic (low GI) value. Food with low GI value is digested and absorbed slowly thus preventing blood glucose levels from spiking up. * Always aim for a complete meal and ensure that your intake comprises the required amounts of vitamins and minerals. Lay more emphasis on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes, low-fat protein and dairy products. * Go for a nutritionally dense meal, replete with all essential nutrients. Ensure you are consuming at least 400 calories to sustain yourself for three-four hours. * Maintain a routine. Eat at the same time every day. This helps the body to get accustomed to a fixed schedule and work well in tandem. -*- Poonam Sharma, a fitness expert, and dietitian associated with Dietliciouz, suggests: * Sleep for an extra hour if you have to. Tired people tend to eat more food and are prone to binging throughout the day. * Prefer eating eggs in any form as they tend to make you feel fuller. * Sometimes people mistake thirst for hunger and end up eating something. So that needs to be analysed. * Add two to three times of tea in your diet and that is sure to keep your hunger at bay.

What women from Delhi-NCR order most online?
