The Iris/Meri phenomenon has been crazy to watch. When I started writing back in 2021 there were no real on-site ships with SCPs, and I assumed the site would be hostile to such a thing (likely due to guides and discussion posts from 2012-2015). Now the 105/166 pairing is probably the dominant thing people talk about and write with the characters now. And these are legacy characters to boot.

I think it was heavily implied that Alice is essentially a Magician in Mahoyo with how Ploys are described specifically as “Magic” instead of “magecraft” in the narration, especially with Flat Snark’s scenes. FGO also describes her as “very close to a Magician herself” so I think Ploys really are manifestations of the First Magic rather than magecraft that breaks the rules.

After all, Aoko inherits the Fifth Magic, so Alice could probably inherit the First. Plus, with how Meinsters ‘reproduce’ and create lines of succession akin to faeries, it’s possible Alice is considered to be Yumina by whatever principles govern the First Magic. Even then I can buy the Meinster’s magecraft tapping into the First like how things like Ars Ansel Solomonius tapped into the Fifth or Taubame Gaeshi tapped into the Second.

What are your thoughts on the magic system“Ploy Kickshaw”?

I think it was rather silly to make the distinction that Magecraft is the use of spells to shortcut results otherwise obtainable within physically realistic means (For example, you can set someone on fire without any magical energy if you've got gasoline and a match) while True Magic is manifesting physically impossible phenomena (alternate dimensions, manipulating souls, etc etc), and then have Alice be able to do fairy-tale style magic without it being True Magic.

With Ploys, Alice can breathe true life into inanimate objects with fully functional personalities and sentience, she can bend physics, even manifest the setting of the Age of Gods on top of the modern world by overwriting a small area, feat only Arcueid (and that one FGO villain at the start of Universe in the Missing Buckle) has shown to be able to do.

And that's not True Magic apparently. Nevermind that Alice's mom was very likely Wizard Girl-Jesus wielder of the First Magic herself, no that's just a thing Alice does but its normal, don't worry about it.

But we'll have to give Alice a pass, because Mahoyo wouldn't be Mahoyo without her and the Thames troll has an amazing soundtrack
