Okay. I have slept, I've thought about things and got some more persepctives, and I think I have better idea on the whole issue of "what is appropriation" versus "what is a product of diasporic continuation of culture" when it comes to Heathenry. I'm busy today so I won't be able to write about it now, but I'll get around to posting this at some point.
#God I could go on for ages about how Europeans don't understand how Diaspora works#and how often that causes misunderstandings#dittoing what op is saying about Scandinavian diaspora as someone who also grew up in an area with a large Norwegian American population#but also want to expand on how Celtic paganism has a similar situation#I know Celtic Paganism is more fraught on this issue#because most of the cultures it comes from experienced English colonialism (and are still experiencing it)#and if you view 'Americans' as just a cultural extension of English imperialism it can be upsetting to see us pick up Celtic Paganism#but that really ignores how incredibly vast the different Celtic American diasporas are in the U.S.#like its crazy to me as a Scottish American#when I see arguments about how I (and people like me) shouldn't practice Celtic paganism#because I literally grew up speaking Scottish Gaelic#and I was born before Bòrd na Gàidhlig was created so I probably speak it better than most actual Scottish people my age#my granny spoke it too#my parents both speak it#I have never been to a family wedding where the formal wear for men wasn't kilts#like no I'm not from Scotland but it would be fundamentally inaccurate to say Scottish culture is something I'm appropriating#it's literally MY culture#also I think the appropriation argument is extra dumb with most modern neo Pagan stuff because it's like#.... with very limited exception#people actually from these countries didn't grow up practicing Pagan worship either!#these are fucking reconstructionist religions#we are all troubleshooting the same sets of incomplete historical text to figure out what was happening in these pre Christian religions#and if we can't figure it out we just make it up#what does where you were born even if to do with it?#most people in modern day Scotland don't worship Danu#these are not closed traditions. you can not appropriate them. the people who actually practiced these religions#have been dead for thousands of years#there's plenty of reasons to be pissed off at Americans#go pick a real one

kitten i have to be honest your misunderstanding of what 'death of the author' actually means is getting embarassing and mommy would prefer if you posted less or maybe attended some classes on literary analysis

Kidnapper: We have your child Sisko: But Jake's sitting right here? Kidnapper: Then who just asked for warm milk and made us cut the crusts off their sandwich? Sisko: Oh god... you have Julian

everyone please list your favourite probable omens of this year so far. for me it's the white horse dripping in blood running through london.
not sure what that means but absolutely sure it's the kind of thing ancient people would have love to interpret in some way. I'm sure there are more omen candidates however.

I would absolutely watch a sitcom style series about the drama and internal politics of a Starfleet spouse club btw

So we all know that Tumblr is US-centric. But to what degree? (and can we skew the results of this poll by posting it at a time where they should be asleep?)
Reblog to increase sample size!

The fact that homelessness is controversial tells you everything you need to know about conservatives.
#it's very difficult as someone in a community with very limited financial resources#that so often the only option when someone is about to be homeless#is to ping every community members who might have a couch to crash on and see if anyone has space available#because a) a lot of the time no one does - my state has the 4th largest homeless population in the country. Those couches are usually fille#and b) when people are drug addicts/ have a mental illness that makes them hard to live with/ just generally have a difficult personality#people with said couches are a lot less willing to actually take them in#which isn't even unreasonable#like if you don't feel safe having someone in your house you shouldn't have them live with you#but those same complicating factors are also often the ones that disqualify people from accessing a shelter space#(if one is even available)#and then if we can find a shelter space for someone there's often some qualifier like#'they have to sleep on the street for at least one night before they can have a bed and that space might not be available tomorrow'#< < real thing I've been told by shelter case workers when calling on someones behalf#and it's like girly#we KNOW this person will be homeless tomorrow if they don't get a shelter space#why the fuck is this a requirement?#anyways the way we run homeless shelters in this country is a whole other issue that I have So Many options on#but regardless there are so many instances where I've seen a community member end up homeless#and all I can think is like 'this person is a prime example of why housing should be a universal right'#you shouldn't have to be likeable or respectable or have a family with resources just to have housing#you shouldn't have to be dependent on the generosity of more resourced individuals in your community for your basic rights#like it's crazy the way we refuse to actually deal with this issue in the U.S#because that's my experience as someone who has never been homeless#and who actually has a large social network to pull from when trying to get people resources#but guess what a big social network doesn't mean that much if most of the people in that network don't have space or resources to spare#so like... what IS the support system for people then?
