(THE END OF) BC’S FRESHMAN LINE sources & transcript below the cut
Screenshot of BC vs DU, 2024 Frozen Four Finals // Frozen Four: Boston College loses to Denver in national championship // Gabe Perreault // Ryan Leonard // Fortesa Latifi // Leonard has unfinished business // Gabe Perreault Returning // John Banville // Smith signs with the Sharks // Another Nightmare - The Vaccines // Celebrini, Smith becoming fast friends // Gold and Bones, Friday Pilots Club // the NHL will wait // Samson, Regina Spektor // Smith, Perreault // Leonard, Perreault // Smith, Leonard // BC Line // five more minutes
ID’s are in order of appearance.
(1) Black text on a lilac background, the beginning of Fortesa Latifi’s poem The Truth About Grief. Text reads:
all my grief says the same thing:
this isn’t how it’s supposed to be.
this isn’t how it’s supposed to be.
(2) Screencap of the 2024 Frozen Four Championship match broadcast. The final score reads DENVER 2 - BOSTON COLLEGE 0. The broadcast is zoomed in on Boston College Eagles player Will Smith, who is kneeling on the ice with his helmet cage partially lifted. The chin guard obscures his mouth, he rests his chin on his glove. His hair is dark and stuck to his face from sweat. His eyes, seen through the cage, are red rimmed and haunted.
(3) Photo of Boston College Eagles player Gabe Perreault after BC’s loss to Denver. He stares out at the ice with his stick still in his hands. Captain Eamon Powell’s head can be seen at the bottom of the photo — he is at Perreault’s feet having fallen to his knees after the final whistle.
(4) Photo of Boston College Eagles player Ryan Leonard during the same loss. He is on his knees and curled up with his head bowed on the ice, hidden between his fisted hands, overwhelmed by grief. He looks small against the empty sheet of ice.
(5) Black text on a white background. It is a headline that reads: “Frozen Four: Boston College loses to Denver in national championship”
(6) The end of Latifi’s poem, black text on lilac:
and the world laughs.
holds my hope by the throat.
says:
but this is how it is
(7) Black text on a white background. Headline reads: “Leonard has unfinished business before making jump to NHL with Capitals” subheading reads: “Forward, No. 8 pick in 2023 Draft, focused on Boston College quest for NCAA title this season”
(8) Black text on white. Headline reads: “Boston College Hockey Forward Gabe Perreault Returning For Sophomore Season”
(9) From John Banville’s The Sea. Grey text on pale green. Text reads: “The past beats inside me like a second heart.”
(10) Black text on white. Headline reads: “Smith, No. 4 pick of 2023 NHL Draft, signs with Sharks.”
(11) From Another Nightmare by the Vaccines. Black text on orange. Text reads:
You announced to the stadium that
You knew that you were leaving and you’d never come back
Even for love
It wasn’t enough
(12) Article excerpt: “I think it was time to take the next step,” Smith said. “It’s the best league in the world and you’re getting the best players every single night. That’s definitely something that factored in wanting to make that decision.
“It was a really tough decision because of just how much I love BC and my teammates there,” Smith said. “We had a really special bond. Honestly, before I left for [2024 IIHF World Championship] I’d made up my mind that I was going to sign, but I wanted to make sure I did it at the right time.”
(13) From Gold and Bones by Friday Pilots Club. White text on black. Text reads:
Between feeling alive and feeling fine
But I won’t beg, and I won’t look back
‘Cause somewhere deep I know you want that
(14) Article excerpt: “It doesn’t matter the players that left or the players that come in, our coaching staff is going to put together a team that wants to win a national championship,” said Leonard.
(15) From Samson by Regina Spektor. White text on red. Text reads: I LOVED YOU FIRST, I LOVED YOU FIRST
(16) White text on teal. Headline reads: “Sharks roommates Celebrini, Smith becoming fast friends”
(17) Photo of San Jose Sharks teammates Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith grinning at each other during Sharks Development Camp. Other Sharks prospects mill about around them.
(18) Black text on white. Headline reads: “World Juniors: BC Line of Hagens, Leonard, and Perreault Looking Historic for Team USA”
(19) Article excerpt: Part of the reason that this line has been so impactful for the Americans is that the trio plays together at Boston College, driving the offence for their NCAA squad as well. Hagens was a natural fit with Leonard and Perreault after their former NTDP center Will Smith left BC to turn pro with the San Jose Sharks this season.
(20) From Spektor’s Samson again. White text on red. Text reads: I HAVE TO GO, I HAVE TO GO
(21) Cropped photo of Gabe Perreault (left) and Will Smith (right) during a celly. Smith cradles Perreault’s head as they bump helmets. Smith’s eyes are closed, his mouth is open in a laugh.
(22) Cropped photo of Ryan Leonard (left) and Gabe Perreault (right) during a celly. Their arms are around each other tightly, they smile joyfully. Just visible behind them is the top of Will Smith’s (#6) helmet.
(23) Cropped photo of Ryan Leonard (left) and Will Smith (right) during a celly. Smith has jumped into Leonard, they share a joyful embrace. Smith grins wide and Leonard appears to be mid-yell.
(24) Photo of Ryan Leonard, Gabe Perreault, and Will Smith on the bench during a match. They all lean forward over the boards and have put their heads together, presumably to conspire.
(26) Black text on white. Text reads: “In another universe we had five more minutes”

i was under the impression that macklin and will first played against each other at college, but through recent investigation* (*trawling through everyone's favourite reporter's blog) i learned that they've been playing against each other semi-regularly since 2020. and i couldn't stop thinking about it. so.... here's a brief overview of every game the two of them have played as opponents.
Tumblr media
note: there are several games on here (marked with an asterisk) where they didn't actually play each other, but were at the same tournament and i've therefore deemed worthy of inclusion. please let me know if there is anything i have missed!
August 2nd, 2020: All-American Prospects 05s vs. 06s (05 win, 9-8)
Tumblr media
all-american prospects is a summer hockey program; boys were split into teams based on birth year
will's team (the 05s) beat macklin's (06s) 9-8 in the final of a tournament
there is a video of every goal here, but it's not exactly high quality or riveting so i didn't go through and make a record of who scored what
the aaphockey instagram page is still up and it has the rosters of the tournament if you're so inclined. several familiar names on there, including sharks prospect quentin musty on the 05 team
*December 2nd, 2021: Shattuck-St.-Mary's Prep vs. USNTDP U17s (Shattuck win, 4-2)
this game is a little bit iffy because it's pretty unlikely that the two of them were actually on the ice together
according to the NTDP website will wasn't a skater in this game (and i am choosing to trust their records), and the shattuck website doesn't really keep records of. uh anything that happens in their games or who plays.
this was still a match-up of two teams for which they were both roster players, but highly unlikely they would have faced each other
if macklin did play in this game, it would have been against will's teammates gabe perreault and ryan leonard who he's also been playing against pretty regularly since then in the ushl and ncaa
December 9th, 2022: Chicago Steel vs. USNTDP U18s (Steel win, 5-4)
their first proper match up in the ushl
it was macklin's first and only year on the chicago steel, and will's second as part of the usntdp
in the third round of the shootout, will failed to score. immediately after, in the fourth round, macklin scored the goal which would win the game (watch this game recap, from 5:15 to the end of the video)
^ they were not technically going directly head to head against each other (ryan fine, a fellow all-american prospects 05 failed to score for usa right after macklin) but it still feels significant to me
April 1st, 2023: Chicago Steel vs. USNTDP U18s (Steel win, 6-5)
will scored the goal that sent the game to OT
macklin had a secondary assist on the game winner
April 2nd, 2023: Chicago Steel vs. USNTDP U18s (Steel win, 7-3)
the third and final match up between these two teams
macklin had a four point game with two goals and two assists
this game means that every time they played each other in the ushl, macklin's team won
*April 20th-30th, 2023: IIHF U18 World Championships
they did not technically play each other here but they were both in basel, switzerland for several days (preliminaries took place earlier in different cities for usa and canada)
team canada earned bronze and team usa won gold
*December 26th, 2023-January 5th, 2024: IIHF World Junior Championships
again, they did not play each other; canada came fifth while team usa won gold
but they were technically in sweden at the same time (in different towns, though, and i'm not actually sure how long team canada hung around after their loss). do with that what you will.
will talks about macklin being a standout player here (at 1:19:52)
January 26th, 2024: Boston University vs. Boston College (BC win, 4-1)
the first of their four meetings while will played for bc and macklin played for bu
at the time of this game, boston university was ranked no. 1 in the nation and boston college was ranked no. 2; this was the first time in history where the two teams had met with these rankings
will had one assist
this video is a bit of a highlight reel and it's a fun watch
January 27th, 2024: Boston University vs. Boston College (BC win, 4-3)
both will and macklin had third period goals
after this game macklin led ncaa rookies with 17 goals (he was also only 17 at the time, which makes it more impressive)
highlights here
February 5th, 2024: Boston University vs. Boston College (BU win, 4-3)
beanpot semifinals! an important game, and the only one bu won against bc all year
macklin had two goals and will had an assist
this game sent bu to the beanpot finals against northeastern, which they lost 3-4 in OT
highlights here
March 23rd, 2024: Boston University vs. Boston College (BC win, 6-2)
hockey east championship finals
the last of their ncaa games against each other and also possibly their most important match-up ever because it was the night of the famous will smith hockey dick trick
will scored four goals and had an assist to help win bc the title
macklin had a goal in the third which will later answered with an empty netter. so.
highlights here! i highly recommend
*April 11th-13th, 2024: NCAA Frozen Four
BC and BU did not play each other, but both teams were in st. paul, minnesota for the ncaa frozen four tournament
boston university lost to denver in the semi-finals (1-2 in OT) on april 11th
boston college lost to denver in the finals (0-2) on april 13th
these were the last games that will and mack played in college
July 4th, 2024: San Jose Sharks Prospects Scrimmage (Teal win, 8-7)
they were continuously put on opposite teams throughout camps and preseason but the most important of these match-ups was the prospects scrimmage
fun detail: will says this was probably their seventh game against each other and that they were pretty pissed off when they found out they weren't on the same team again (see here)
will was on team teal and macklin on team white
you can watch the whole game here. will and macklin are both standouts
one of the most important details to me is the fact that team white came back from a 7-2 deficit just to lose the game in shootout (macklin fumbled the puck)
prospects scrimmage also gave us this photo. many thanks
Tumblr media
so there it is! possibly i've left off something by accident, but i think i've covered at least the major games. in any case, very interesting that they've played each other with some regularity over the past two-ish years!

Every sect, cult, creed, denomination all claimed to be the one true doctrine, and yet none seemed true when held under the microscope. So I wondered what else was out there. I promise you, the last thing I wanted to do was find the one true religion. But unfortunately, I did.

do you think diana was frantically rushing around her house on walton way for gabes baby items when the fire started? trying to make sure she grabbed everything she could and placed it into her little box of hers? dan trying to make sure she and natalie were safely out of the house but having to go back inside to look for diana?

all your incorrect opinions on West End's Next to Normal is your own undoing, i fear.
you think the mic placements are too revealing and tacky that it breaks you out of immersion? skill issue. it's not theatre's fault for being underfunded that they don't have the latest technology to get clear microphone packs with the best sound that doesn't get in the way of clothing and hair.
you think jamie parker sounds like kermit? skill issue. you just don't listen to enough diverse and nasal singing voices so you immediately think it's bad. pretty voices and good voices are mutually exclusive, love. and he was good. as a singer myself, he was outstanding.
you think the new direction and interpretation was overdramatic and didn't understand the original's dark and sardonic comedy? skill issue. you just don't understand that the milieu always influences artists and artworks so of course the 2020s' sensitivity to discussions and portrayals of mental health will be vastly different to the 2010's stigmatized perception of mental illnesses.
you think them making gabe a full-on ghost simplifies him and takes away his layers? skill issue. jack wolfe's gabe was never portrayed as just a ghost: in fact he admits himself that the base/foundation of his performance was that gabe is a narrative device but that he wanted him to feel real. (duh, because diana wants him to be real.) and why they made the choice of Gabe touching Natalie's hand is obviously because grief has wafted so much inside the Goodman house that it has now permanently affected Natalie, now that she's seen first-hand her mother attempt suicide and her father break down and fully accept grief.

no because Diana is convinced that if she never grieves Gabe, she'll never really lose him, but dan thinks that if he just completely ignores Gabe's existence, now or before his death, he will never have to feel the pain of the loss. and then there's natalie, who experiences the grief her parents are incapable of feeling, passed down to her.

Imagine going to your big piano recital that is supposed to get you into Yale, your parents don't show up, you have a breakdown on stage, you go home and find out that your mom attempted suicide, and then when you see her three weeks later she has forgotten you.

the fact that the title of the musical is sung by natalie and she’s the one who turns on the light, because this was never about natalie but it was always about natalie

what ppl defending kids on ipads don’t seem to understand is that there are other ways to keep kids occupied. my mom had a whole bag full of little toys and games for me to play with while waiting in lines at disney world. once your kid is like 7 or 8 they can read a book. they can color. or they can literally just sit there and imagine things. i did that a lot as a kid.
