“shit, where is it?” annie had a very important outing, an interview to once again ensure the public of just how good vought was. another day to put on a good face, but to most people every face she had was the perfect one. her hair had been brushed and styled neatly, makeup done very subtly. 

though there was a missing piece to her beloved suit ― the cape. 

she had searched the suite for a good ten minutes now, swearing it was in the same spot she had left it just the day before thought when she looked the spot was bare. annie’s boots stomped lightly through her home one more time, a frustrated huff falling from her lips before walking out of her front door. 

there could only be one other place the piece of clothing could have been, but even after it had nearly been ripped away from her body, she couldn’t have left it there.

a knock on his door loud enough for him to hear, she slowly pushed her way into his own living space. “love?” she spoke. “are you here?”

her head tilted into his palm, brown eyes not once leaving his gaze. the same hand that had been ready to pop her head off into a bloody mess, but it was soft. it was warm and welcoming, it made her content.

he made her content.

“i think that’s why you and i... we deserve each other.” annie licked her lips, warmth once again falling over her body. 

the feeling in the room was evident, love. if there could be pink hearts floating over her head in that moment, there’d be hundreds. there’d probably been a hundred knocks at his door during their moment, surely to try and clean up the pair’s publicity stunt.

it was silent though, her ears only falling on his voice.

“well, he doesn’t have to be such a dick about it.” annie scrunched her face, eyes wandering over to the wall. she could sympathize with butcher in ways, especially over becca. things happened that shouldn’t have, and maybe that’s why he and hughie had bonded so quickly. both loves lost because of supes without remorse, but annie wasn’t about to bring up the topic of robin.

his answer was quick, bringing her back to reality and causing her to look up at him. his words made a burning sensation in annie’s stomach, a sigh falling from her mouth. as proud as she was of her life and where she’d gone, in ways annie felt like she’d lost herself. she had moved and bowed at every single thing vought offered her. a puppet in her own mind, though hughie made her feel good about herself more than anyone else did, especially after turning against them.

“nothing in my life has been truly amazing… besides meeting you.” she smiled slightly, pressing a kiss against his lips. “you’re like… my savior. god that’s corny, isn’t it?”

the sound of his laughter was like music to her ears, even if it was just a little. annie wanted to see him happy, now more than ever. if she could be the one to keep him that way, then it was perfect.

she too couldn’t believe the hidden similarities, even still it was like they were figuring one another out and realizing how close they could be. 

“i would have never thought it would come to this.” her head shook just a little bit, nose twitching to try and calm her emotions a bit.

“imagined if we’d kept hating one another and none of this would have been figured out?” her hand moved to his lower stomach, tracing little hearts against his skin with her fingernail. not hard enough to scratch, like it would hurt him anyway.

he could hear her heart beat and flutter, she knew he could. “that would be like a tragedy.” eye contact was made, eyes still watery, but she wanted to take in his beauty. during that moment, even if it was a short one, they were the only two in the entire world.

she stands there, stunned at first. face scrunched up in playful disgust, head turning his his direction with a brow raised.

"what? my lips aren't good enough?"

annie didn’t say anything more for a bit, letting him soak in everything he may have been feeling in that moment, after those words that spewed from her mouth without a second thought.

in retrospect, homelander had never had anyone that allowed him to feel safe. in her opinion, he was always the one making everyone else feel at ease. the greatest superhero, the public saw him as someone to protect them from all evil. but had he truly ever had anyone make him feel the same?

did he ever have a safe space?

she noticed his eyes go glassy, watery tears about to seep from the lids as he thumb wiped them away. “you don’t have to look away…” she assured, trying to be comforting the best she could. this day in general was overwhelming for the both of them, him probably more than her.

it was a different side of him for sure, he kept showing her his true self. probably the person he’d always wanted to show someone. “and you’ll always be safe with me.” she spoke again, her own voice cracking as she offered a small smile.

annie knew there was deep tension between her and butcher. he saw her as disgusting, not pure. that’s what he thought about all supes, and homelander’s madness and history with the man didn’t help his feelings toward all of them at all. it just made it worse if anything.

“why can’t he see that i’m not like them? that i’m on your side?” her hands stopped all movements while she huffed a breath against his chest. “like, i try so hard to prove to him that i’m not… the same. that just aggravates me to no end.”

annie couldn’t hide her blatant frustration, wondering why she couldn’t get through to certain people. hughie tried his best to ease her mind, but there wasn’t much that could possibly help her get past this. her brain couldn’t comprehend it, maybe it was just meant to be. 

working together? sure. but going as far as liking one another? it was very unlikely.

“hm.” she replied to hughie’s wonder, taking in a deep breath as her thoughts soon turned back to him. “...did you feel that way about me? when you found out?” annie had to ask, maybe it was a weird way to turn a conversation but she had to know.
